The team discusses Matthew's career journey in editing and the transition from unscripted to scripted work. They also address job loss in Hollywood during COVID, technical adaptations, AI in editing, mentoring, and upcoming events for learning and engagement. Matthew Barbato is an American editor, producer, and director with over two decades of filmmaking experience. Most recently, he returned to season 4 of "Only Murders in the Building" after previously editing season 1 of the show. Beyond "Only Murders in the Building," Matthew has a diverse range of editing credits on several award-winning television series across comedy and drama, including "Lessons in Chemistry," "The Good Place," "Veep," "High Fidelity," and Dave. His other recent credits include Disney+'s "American Born Chinese," Netflix's "The Kominsky Method," and Peacock's "Apples Never Fall." Initially, Matthew's professional career took off in 2001, when his work on "Trauma: Life in the E.R." received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for a non-fiction program. Matthew's professional credits are not limited to the editing sphere; his varied career includes shooting and directing verité, as is evident in Anthony Bourdain's first television series, "A Cook's Tour," for which he acted as camera operator and director.
