    28. Sick Fat: Biology, Not Willpower. Stop fighting the wrong enemy | Evan Nadler, MD, MBA

SICK FAT: Biology, Not Willpower. Stop fighting the wrong enemy! Sick Fat, also known as adiposopathy, is a tough topic, so I found one of the most experienced specialists to walk us through it. With this episode, I'm hoping to change the narrative around obesity & chronic disease. From one of blame, to one of biology & healing. What I like about Dr. Nadler so much is his balanced approach to helping patients. Even though he's a bariatric surgeon who's "treatment agnostic". He spends his time dispelling myths & misperceptions with data & science, but wraps his messaging in tones of healing & empathy. Evan Nadler, MD, MBA, is the past Co-Director of the Children's National Obesity Institute, built & directed the nation's largest pediatric weight management program by nearly twofold, treating thousands of children and adolescents with obesity. This is bound to stir some emotions, so I'd love to hear your questions or comments! 27. Exercise Is Cancer Medicine | Anna Schwartz

Meet the woman who helped create the field of exercise oncology. Anna Schwartz, PhD, NP, isn't just a world record-holding cyclist and cancer survivor – she's the researcher whose groundbreaking work proved exercise is medicine for cancer patients. From being told by a mentor, "nobody's studying this" to co-authoring the first exercise guidelines for cancer survivors, Dr. Schwartz's journey is remarkable. Here's what'll shock you: exercise reduces your risk of getting cancer by 10-15%, and lifestyle interventions account for 80-90% of disease prevention. That means most cancers could be prevented through movement and healthy choices. We dive deep into why 90% of cancer survivors experience fatigue and how exercise beats any medication for treating it. Plus, for those already fighting cancer, exercise can reduce recurrence by 30-50%. Whether you're looking to prevent cancer, currently battling it, or supporting someone who is, this episode delivers actionable strategies. Dr. Schwartz shares details about her free Cancer Exercise app that adapts to any fitness level – from bedridden to elite athlete. Get ready for real talk about why providers hesitate to discuss exercise with patients, how to bridge the gap between patients and exercise specialists, and why movement truly is medicine. 26. How I lost 82 Pounds | Debra Fowler

Meet Debra Fowler, a 48-year-old nurse from North Carolina who went from hiding in the back of photos to confidently stepping on the scale each week. Her incredible 82-pound weight loss journey began with a powerful wake-up call at a funeral where she realized denial wasn't working anymore. In this raw, honest conversation, Debra shares how she tried everything—from calorie counting journals to meal replacement programs—before finding what actually worked. She opens up about the shame of eating candy in secret, the physical pain that made walking unbearable, and how GLP-1 medications finally gave her the control she'd been desperately seeking. What makes this story special: Debra's 15-year-old daughter became her workout accountability partner, and now they're crushing fitness classes together three times a week. From spinal fusion surgery to finding joy in getting dressed again, this episode proves that getting healthy isn't about perfection—it's about finding what works for YOUR life. If you've ever felt stuck, judged by doctors, or wondered if you're "broken," Debra's story will remind you that you're not alone, and it's never too late to take back control. 24. Can You Reverse Heart Disease? | Ajay Joseph, MD

Fascinating conversation with Dr. Ajay Joseph, an interventional cardiologist from Tulsa who's doing something remarkable. He spends 4 days a week putting stents in patients' hearts, and 1 day a week teaching them how to cook healthy meals so they never need stents in the first place. Here's what stopped me in my tracks: → 90% of heart attacks are preventable → Researchers have actually proven you can REVERSE plaque buildup through lifestyle changes → It's the soft plaque (not the hard calcified stuff) that causes most heart attacks and strokes His perspective really hit home: "Putting in stents is like mopping the floor while the faucet is still running. Someone's gotta mop, but we should also turn off that faucet." The story that got me was about his patient who needed stent procedures every 6 months for years. After changing his diet and starting to exercise, he hasn't needed a single procedure in 4 years! Now this patient drives an hour to Dr. Joseph's cooking classes just to share his story with other patients! Dr. Joseph runs programs where patients learn to cook, manage stress, and understand how their daily choices connect to their health outcomes. It's not about perfection - it's about sustainable progress over time. What struck me most: every medical specialty has patients they can't fully help with traditional treatments. Fatty liver, early-stage Alzheimer's, diabetes complications - these are the conditions where lifestyle medicine can make the biggest difference. Worth listening to the full conversation on the Move Eat Give podcast if you're interested in how we might prevent rather than just treat chronic disease.
