Erin Power | Can we change fitness culture?

Erin Power | Can we change fitness culture?

In this episode Ashleigh takes a deep dive on fitness culture with Erin Power, Coaching & Curriculum Director at the Primal Health Coach Institute about the current state of fitness culture, it's impact on women specifically, and whether or not leaders in the fitness and wellness industry can hope to change or dismantle the harmful aspects of fitness culture in an increasingly digital, instant-gratification world.
Ashleigh also reveals that she is developing a course for Primal Health Coach Institute for coaches aimed at creating a deeper understanding around strength training for women: the physiological, psychological, hormonal, and cultural aspects as well as practical knowledge that is sorely lacking in generic strength training programs. It will cover practical aspects around recovery, hormonal health, physical changes throughout a woman's lifecycle, as well as nutritional requirements, physiological differences and the impacts on training programming, and how coaches can better inform themselves about these topics to provide better support to strength-training women.
Erin and Ashleigh cover the following topics:
Is it naive to ask people to aim for non-esthetic goals, or will body image always be a significant part of fitness? How can coaches promote self-efficacy? How can we help determine the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic goals in our social media obsessed culture? Is competition (and comparison) inherently bad? Is #fitspo ever inspiring? How can we work to lessen the influence and impact of fitness culture? So much more! New fan

I heard you first on Old Fashioned on Purpose, and I have loved your podcast. Your birthing experience was very very similar to mine, so that was fun to hear someone else tell a story that sounded just like mine.
I’d LOVE to hear some episodes about how you are feeding your child. I have three kiddos now and forth in the way, and this is a challenge that I can’t seem to conquer yet. We live in a tough S.A.D. culture, and navigating that with kids feels particularly tough for me. I’d love to see how you are doing with that.
Thank you for all you are doing, I am anxiously awaiting your first cookbook to arrive in the mail.

Making my day

I increasingly find my brain gravitating towards the pertinent and well-presented content of your podcast. Nearly daily I circle back to golden nuggets of information from your show! I am in my last semester of a nursing masters where I am focusing my studies on women's mental and the neurobiological differences in women in psychiatric crises. When wading through the drudgery of research assignments, I find energy, motivation, and caliber from the show, especially episodes that involve reproductive hormones with Dr. Elly Michelle and Dr. Carrie Jones. I want you to know how your hard work continues to transcend academic environments as well as my personal health journey. Stay bold!

Very good

My first episode and I loved hearing about your pregnancy and birth. I look forward to going back to listen to the rest of your podcasts. I wouldn’t blame you for stopping to focus on that little sweet baby, but I’d love to hear more from you when you are ready.
