No Dunks

When a favorite NBA podcast of mine went off the air a few years ago, I came across No Dunks and specifically used a (recent at the time) episode talking about the announcement of Derrick Rose’s jersey retirement as a test run. Off-court behavior shouldn’t entirely taint a player’s larger legacy IMO, but it is a part of it. So to hear Bulls fan Trey acknowledge Rose’s transgressions before diving into his on-court accomplishments was enough to pass that initial test, and I’ve been hooked ever since. To hear a similar discussion with the actual jersey retirement recently was a nice, albeit oddly drawn out, full circle moment. This sentiment was driven home with all three co-hosts’ words about the ongoing events in Minnesota. It would’ve been easy to make a fairly general statement about that and the way it impacted the NBA, but it was a pleasant surprise to hear a podcast hosted by three (I believe white? I’m podcast only 😅) men be that direct in calling out what needed to be called out. Thank you for your strong words. Oh and the actual basketball talk is pretty great too. While not perfect (I’m pretty sure Aaron Gordon’s 50 point season opener this year went unmentioned?!), the game analysis combines well with discussions around the league’s wider trends and overall state while avoiding the “talking heads” feel that seem to be on every mainstream network. Though I’ve only been around a year or two, the 20 Years of Classics squad show in January of this year is a testament to what you all have done and mean to basketball fans. P.S. It’s always a nice bonus whenever you slip in some WNBA references too. P.P.S. It took me more than a full year to realize the intro was “Good morning sweet world!” and not a reference to some Vine or TikTok accidentally mispronuncing Sea World as “swea world.”
