I’m very liturgically motivated. I love my hymnal, love Tradition etc. but in all honesty, many of the guests on this show are teetering on idolatry, often suggesting that these aren’t merely wise customs, but rather necessary rules and doctrines- and that if we only started doing Latin mass, or had more icons or started celebrating Sexigesma Sunday “the way the church fathers did” (or something) then our churches would be PACKED and all our problems would simply go away.
There are indeed GEMS of episodes on here, no doubt, but on average, the guests have no new perspectives to share other than how brilliant they are, and how those who don’t embrace a niche tradition simply aren’t devout enough… meanwhile their churches are often in the hospice stage of its lifecycle…
To be clear, I’m Glad the show exists, and I’m not doubting the motives of the creators etc. but I fear that it’s a few molecules away self-indulgent Lutheranism, Lutheran-maxxing, Lutheranism for Lutheranism’s sake. Is Lutheranism only for those who already know what it is and where to find it? Or is the purity of scripture and the Grace of God for all people- even those who haven’t read multiple books on Theophilus of Antioch?
And to be fair- maybe this pod isn’t for “the commoner”, in which case that’s fine, but until then, I feel this podcast is the 3rd pane of the Winnie the Pooh meme. It’s so heavenly minded, it’s often of no earthly use.
