A Multicultural Ministry, Past and Present

On our episode today wehave two guests, Father Jonathan Sawicki of the Diocese of Harrisburg, and FatherStephen Robbins who is returning for his second appearance on our program. Similarin age and backgrounds, we discuss our understanding of faith as inherited fromour ancestors but also as to how it impacts the work of ministry today in a verydifferent Church. A Church which sometimes struggles to preserve its history whilealso responding to the very real needs of the world today. Through our conversation we take you through the case study of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania and the expression of immigrant Catholicism there that can give us a unique insight into how we might better serve the immigrants and the several generation removed Polish Catholics today. Episode 8.1 St. Urszula Ledochowska

Our surnames can tell people a lot about us, notonly our national origin or heritage, but their also connected to those thathave come before us with the same name. For better or worse our names can causea form of prejudice unfairly defining us before we have a chance to defineourselves. St. Urszula Ledochowska was born to a long and illustrious line ofPolish nobility, yet in taking on the mission of the neediest of the people ofthe time in which she lived, brought forth an amazing gift of good to theworld. Venerated for her sanctity for her life and not her surname, her storyis an inspiration for anyone struggling with their sense of identity in a worldthat can be unforgiving at best. Hear her story and pray with her and us today!   Prayer/Modlitwa: Oh,Jesus, I commend to your Heart …Look and follow your Heart’s desire.  Allow your Heart to act. Oh, Jesus, I counton You. I put my trust in You. I surrender myself completely to you. I am sureof you. Oh, Heart, filled with love, I put all my trust in You, since I,myself, am capable of committing all evil, however, I expect everything fromyour goodness. By the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, accept, O God, theprayers offered to You through the intercession of Saint Ursula, faithfulimitator of the virtues of the Heart of your Son, and grant us the favors weare confidently asking for. Amen. O Jezu, Sercu Twemu polecam… Amen. Dla zasług Pana naszego Jezusa Chrystusa przyjmij, oBoże, modlitwy zanoszone do Ciebieza wstawiennictwem świętej Urszuli, wiernej naśladowczyni cnót NajświętszegoSerca Syna Twego, i udziel nam łask, o które z ufnością prosimy. A Noble History: A Modern Legacy Part I

For anyonewho spends a lot of time metaphorically living amongst Polish History, you tendto see a lot of surnames that crop up again and again no matter the century.Leszczynski, Poniatowski, Radziwill, just to name a few round out a veritablePolish who’s who of movers and shakers. Another one of these surnames is sharedby our guest today, and it is this history that brings him to our program. Jan Ledochowskishares the surname of a family who’s origins walk hand in hand with that ofPoland itself and also for that matter, that of Ukraine. Jan has catalogued anextensive family history reaching back 1,000 years. Yet his understanding ofhis family is not one that exists wholly in the past. With a background infinance, Jan has also worked in Poland before and after the fall of Communismand has advocated dialogue, understanding and reconciliation between Poles andtheir heritage both the good and the bad. His level of knowledge about history, current events, and religion was truly stunning, and I found him to be anincredible individual to speak to. As such, our full conversation couldn’t becontained within one episode and as we have done before in our show, we havesplit it into two parts one following the other. Please do enjoy thisfascinating journey through the history of the Ledochowski Family with Jan. 5. Polish? Lithuanian? Its all the same isn't it?

Polish? Lithuanian? Its all the same isn't it?

For centuries, the Polish-LithuanianCommonwealth was an imposing state dominating Central and Eastern Europe. This nation, made possible by a 14th century royal marriage, joined together two ethnicities who share a common history, yet who are also ethnically distinct. This relationship can sometimes prove cumbersome to our modern understanding of nationality and ethnicity.   Today we welcome Tom Sadauskus, a Lithuanian genealogist to help shed light on this relationship. His experience and ethnic background as a Lithuanian-America gives us a great perspective. You can reach out to him at tomdoesgeneaology@gmail.com for any researchinquiries.    Chopin and Bach Pieces Courtesy ofclassicals.de Bach - Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Major- BWV 1042Chopin- Grande Valse Brillante; Nocturne Opus37 no. 1 in G minor; Etude Op. 25 no. 1 in A flat major; Nocturne 62 No. 2 in Emajor Recorded, produced, and released to thepublic by: The Musopen Kickstarter Project - Set Chopin Free https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/Musopen/set-chopin-free CreativeCommons - Public Domain Mark 1.0 Universal CC PDM 1.0   10282 cracow city place ambience -loop.WAV by Robinhood76 -- https://freesound.org/s/580352/ -- License:Attribution NonCommercial 4.0 Accordion-music-reverb.wav by eyenorth --https://freesound.org/s/482212/ -- License: Attribution 4.0 Music from the middle ages 07 2013-08-10 Douce DameJolie.wav by Kyster -- https://freesound.org/s/197360/ -- License: Attribution4.0
