Pod Thai - Grumpy Expats In Bangkok

Alex Ledine

From Wolverhampton to Bangkok, two world travelers present to you the most entertaining but least educational podcast about living and travelling in Asia and Bangkok. Here to provide weekly coverage of the very best (and worst) Thailand has to offer. Mostly nonsense with the odd bit of useful information, this certainly isn't a podcast about temples and Buddhas. You will however get recommendations on the best snacks in 7-Eleven and best place to find a Singha. Think more Karl Pilkington, less Michael Palin.

    Ghost Drivers & The Weirdest Email We’ve Ever Read… | S2E5 (#40)

Another week, another attempt at being a “Thailand podcast”. We start off with some proper stuff like books, language learning and culture before quickly descending into the usual. (Glory holes and that) We try and stay positive this week and Todd has researched a few dates for your diary including a plowing festival and an international singing competition you're definitely going to want to know about. We then round things off with our highly professional “Bangkok Bar Awards,” which is essentially just us naming pubs we go to and pretending it’s useful. As always, not much structure, very little expertise, but at least we’re aware of it. 00:05:08 – Motorbike posture analysis A surprisingly passionate breakdown of how to sit on a bike… badly. 00:07:37 – 90km cycling “nightmare” What was meant to be a nice ride turns into a life choice regret. 00:08:28 – Aftershave “aura” theory Todd isn't having it. 00:10:55 – The email we shouldn’t have read This is where things go properly off the rails. 00:13:34 – Fake news disappointment April Fools ruins what could’ve been our best journalism. 00:15:20 – Ghost driver scam The becaureful on Chinese uber. 00:18:03 – Royal Ploughing Festival explained (poorly) We confidently describe something we clearly don’t understand. 00:19:24 – Asiavision This is going to be class. 00:23:24 – Bangkok Bar Awards begin Highly scientific rankings based on where we drink. 00:36:04 – Thai dubbing is mental A surprisingly strong take on voice acting chaos. 00:38:13 – Why British TV casts “ugly” people A rare moment of insight before we lose focus again.

Best Country in Asia? We Definitely Got It Wrong (Again) | S2E4 (#39)

In this week’s episode, we attempt to rank the best countries in Asia by the important metrics: stag weekends, how well you can blow 10 grand, most confusing… you know, the usual. It quickly spirals from half-baked news segments and listener emails into our full-on breakdown of how Asian countries actually stack up against each other, with absolutely no qualifications to do so. We tackle the big questions: Is conveyor belt sushi just one bloke looking for your order?Has ChatGPT officially run out of interesting news? And why don’t Asians have body odour?Naturally, it all descends into complete nonsense by the end — including smell-based dating, questionable science, and a theory about why Japanese submarine crews were apparently selected based on armpit smell. ⏱️ Timestamps 00:40 – Songkran shirts, darts updates 02:00 – The conveyor belt sushi theroy 04:00 – Emails from listeners (including complaints & unexpected praise) 08:40 – “Far East News”… via ChatGPT (and it’s not great) 11:20 – Mystery death in Phuket & “trouble in paradise” 13:30 – The main event: Ranking Asia (badly) 17:00 – Thailand: Best stag do or best country? 22:30 – “Correct answers” revealed (they aren’t really) 26:00 – Do Asians have less body odour? (we’re not qualified) 27:00 – Submarine crew selection… based on armpits 30:00 – Smell-based dating experiments 32:30 – “Land of Smiles” – myth or misunderstanding? 36:30 – Final thoughts: everyone’s different (groundbreaking insight)
