Episode #85 – Quest on Quest on Quest

Episode #85 – Quest on Quest on Quest

Prophecy Radio episode #85 discusses The Last Fallen Moon, the second book in Graci Kim’s Gifted Clans series based on Korean mythology and folklore. Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including an update on the WGA strike and the fact that the official Percy Jackson and the Olympians Twitter account finally posted after four months of silence. This week, we’re also reading The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 11! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and updates (00:02:35)

Happy birthday (and happy Pride Month) to Piper McLean!
The official Percy Jackson and the Olympians Twitter account finally broke their four-month silence to tell us…nothing.
Becky gave us a little more info about the WGA strike and what mini-rooms are.
Oh, and Read Riordan wants us to meet the water dragon goddess from The Last Fallen Realm.

The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim (00:14:29)

We’re so excited to be talking about this book this week, especially with the next one right around the corner.
Don’t forget, you can read Karen’s Last Fallen Moon book review from last year.
Also be sure to check out the interview we did with Graci Kim (which also links to the podcast episode if you’d like to listen instead)!
So…what is this book about, exactly?
This book starts off rough—everyone is so mean to Riley and her family.
Why did Riley insist on going it alone!?
How amazing was the depiction of the Spiritrealm?
It’s interesting to think about how stories and mythologies change over the years and WHY they change.
Torture is still torture, even when it’s disguised as fun.
We talk a lot about the changes to Hell, and why Graci made them.
Karen once again talks about the brilliance of shared universes.
Hattie and Riley’s relationship has been so wonderful to experience.
We talk about some of the new characters we get to meet in this book, but we’ll save the details for the spoiler section.
Speaking of…the major spoilers start at 00:45:34!
Let’s talk about that forgotten underwater kingdom, shall we?
The cosplaying protestors were pretty great, and we have a very important question for our listeners.
What about all the creatures we meet in this book?
Riley goes through so much in this book! Let’s break it all down.
Was Hattie being selfish and impulsive? Was Riley being too self-sacrificing?
Can you believe they actually got arrested!?
Were we surprised by the mayor?
Shout-out to that edible forest! We can’t wait to see the food in Fallen Realm.
Of course the one thing that can destroy the snake is the one thing they gave away!
The culmination of the story in this book is pretty huge.
Let’s talk about Hattie’s big reveal.
That hairpin was important after all!
Thank goodness they got the memory book back!
Will there be more Emmett in the next book?

The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (14:31:37)

This week, we’re reading The Red Pyramid chapter 11!
Do you know what a group of scorpions is called?
It was really great for Sadie and Carter to talk about the difficulties in their lives, even if their conversation got cut off.
What were our first reactions to Zia Rashid?
Would you have fun memorizing all those auspicious times?
    We want a fire-breathing staff!

Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 86, in which we’ll discuss The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, plus an interview with the author herself!

This episode’s hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz.

Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series.

The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:53:31)

This week, we’re reading The Red Pyramid chapter 10!
If we could put out a cat signal, we would sleep in a pile of cats whenever we’re sad.
They’re heading toward Central Park, and the entrance to the Underworld is RIGHT THERE.
Bast isn’t really good at making people feel calm.
It’s kind of weird to think your clothes could still carry residual life auras.
The concept of good vs. evil and order vs. chaos is so interesting.
Bast’s combat magic is pretty epic. And now we want to watch Pacific Rim.
If you’re in an area with scorpions…be careful.
    Let’s learn more about Serqet!
Do you know the temple in the Met that Bast referenced in this chapter?

Episode #83 – Teenage Demigod Things

Prophecy Radio episode #83 discusses The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section, as well as features an exclusive interview with the authors. We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick’s official blog for the TSATS book tour. This week, we’re skipping our The Red Pyramid chapter discussion in order to maximize our time with the new Nico di Angelo book! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and updates (00:03:45)

Do you want us to read Chalice of the Gods chapter by chapter in September?
First off, we shoutout a couple birthdays and anniversaries from this past week.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities is now in paperback (listen to Prophecy Radio episode #2 for our discussion).

The Sun and the Star is a #1 NYT Bestseller!
We do some cleanup following the Sun and the Star book tour, including this interview on Read Riordan.
Rick also wrote a blog post on May 11 to talk about everything he experienced during the tour.
Rick is already signing tip-ins for Chalice of the Gods, which doesn’t come out until September.
Read Riordan has an excerpt for Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older, out on May 16.
If you need to refresh your memory on Ballad & Dagger, you can listen to Prophecy Radio episode #33.
J.C. Cervantes has an adult romance, The Enchanted Hacienda coming out the same day!
Be sure to enter Sarwat Chadda’s giveaway for Fury of the Dragon Goddess.
We also talk about our own giveaway we’re doing for The Sun and the Star!

The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:17:56)

What is the book actually about?
Go read the Sun and the Star book review that made mark Oshiro cry.
Did we actually think it was Bob calling out to Nico?
What did we think of Mr. D’s characterization in this book?
Were we excited to see Rachel again?
Getting to talk about Sally Jackson on Mother’s Day is next-level awesome.
It was super interesting seeing Percy and Annabeth from Nico’s point of view.
Nico and Will’s differing opinion of the Underworld was an obstacle, but not one that they couldn’t overcome.
Okay, so the Underworld is kind of scary, but it’s also beautiful and full of life.
Everyone loves an opposites-attract story, but what’s that like in practice?
Gorgyra’s chapters were, surprisingly, one of our favorite parts of the book.
It was so great getting to see Solangelo from their POV.
If you’ve every experienced anxiety, depression, or PTSD, then the effects that Tartarus has on the demigods will feel very familiar to you.
This book really tests Solangelo’s relationship, but they continuously choose each other throughout it, and that’s the most important part.
The spoiler section starts at 00:59:21.
We revisit the Mary Sue interview and get a little emotional about the title of the book.
Persephone’s Garden was a really wonderful, surprising addition to this book.
Is there any world in which Will doesn’t know “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” by Lil Nas X?
It’s time to talk about all of the wonderful and terrifying monsters in this book.
The troglodytes were totally standouts, and we wouldn’t mind seeing them again.
    Menoetes is dating WHO!?!?
Amphithemis’ character was so interesting, especially because his character didn’t go in the direction we were especting.
We discuss how the Aeternae ended up in this book and why they were the way they were.
And here we thought Small Bob couldn’t be anymore amazing than he already was.
Bob went through so, so much while he was down in Tartarus.
On the count of three, repeat after me: KAREN WAS RIGHT.
Nyx really was the perfect villain for this book, and we have a wonderful discussion about how important it is to choose happiness.
Can you believe even Nemesis and Epiales rebelled against their mother?
We discuss Nico and his Coco Puffs.
Didn’t Bianca choose rebirth? What’s up wit

We’ll keep you up to date on the strike going forward!

The Sun and the Star book tour — Boston (00:33:34)

Karen details her night at the Boston tour stop!
Go follow Liam T. Crowley on Twitter if you haven’t already.
It was awesome seeing Rick and Mark BUT KAREN GOT TO SEE BECKY.
We are not going to include the interview in this week’s episode for some very valid reasons, and we promise the wait will be worth it!
Karen almost walked out on stage on accident! And she almost didn’t get her signed copy!
Mark and Rick were both fantastic, but tbh Steph Lurie stole the show.
This show was so amazing, and the energy levels never dropped, from start to finish.
Why did Rick choose Mark to co-write this book with him?
Can you guess the title of Mark’s first book, which they wrote when they were nine?
Mark drew the map that ended up on the endpapers, and the original version is hilarious and amazing.
They were each asked which part of the book was their favorite.
Becky came out on stage, and the crowd went wild!
Karen teases the interview for the first time, but definitely not the last.
Go read books from Rick Riordan Presents!
Everyone loves Roshani Chokshi, as they should!!
Don’t forget that there are still graphic novels of Rick’s books coming out!
Everyone is super excited for the Kane Chronicles movie, and that made us so happy!
We discuss the possibility that the Kane Chronicles movie might not get made (but we agree with Rick that we’re guardedly optimistic it will!).
What about the Daughter of the Deep movie adaptation?
Unsurprisingly, everyone is super, super excited about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show on Disney+.
Rick said his first reaction to seeing the principal photography was relief.
Rick has learned so much from Mark’s writing!
Mark also got to talk about all of their books that they’ve published!
Could you ever write the last line of a book first?
How long has Rick known that Nico was gay?

Prophecy Radio totally got a name drop during the event!
You’d be surprised which is Mark’s favorite dinosaur.
Which gods would be their parents?
Knowing which characters would be a Swiftie is apparently a big deal.
Karen teases the interview once again, but it’s going to be totally worth it!
Did you see the selfie from the Boston tour stop?
Stay tuned for our upcoming giveaway!

Everything you need to know about The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:13:58)

This first part of the discussion is just a refresher of what has happened in previous books (so there are no spoilers for TSATS).
The Sun and the Star synopsis gives nothing away but definitely entices you to read.
Read Riordan did an OTP timelines article about Nico and Will, which was super helpful.
“The Sword of Hades” is a super helpful short story to read ahead of The Sun and the Star.
In The Son of Neptune, Nico goes to Tartarus for the first time.
Remember how great House of Hades is?
Could you imagine if Nico had left forever after The Blood of Olympus?
Nico is in a good chunk of the first and last books of The Trials of Apollo series.
In The Tower of Nero, we learn that Nico is suffering from PTSD.
Rick really set up The Sun and the Star in that final book in more than one way!
The troglodytes are super important in defeating Nero.
Which books are the most important to reread ahead of The Sun and the Star?
At this point, we announce that you may not want to keep listening if you’re avoiding all spoilers from the officially released articles. (Skip to the chapter discussion, if so!)
According to Read Riordan, it’s going to be important to know Bianca’s di Angelo’s backstory.
We learned A LOT about The Sun and the Star from the Amphithemus entry on Read Riordan.

Hypnos is gonna show up in the story, but we’re much more worried about Epiales.
Then there’s Gorgyra, and all we care about is what the real estate prices are like at the edge of Tartarus. Maybe it’s worth it?

The Sun and the Star is a book for Solangelo fans.
Will Gorgyra end up being an ally?
Now it’s finally time to talk about Nemesis.
Who’s in need of dealing with their inner balance?
Listen to our full discussion of The Sun and the Star chapter 1.
Who will be the villain in this story, and how big of a threat could they pose if this is meant to be a standalone novel?
We read your wildest theories for The Sun and the Star.
Will this all be a fever dream?
Could Mark and Rick pull from the Orpheus myth for the end of this book?
Will Bianca come back from the dead?
We know we’ll learn Will’s sexuality in The Sun and the Star.
What would Nico look like as a doughnut?
Is Small Bob gonna be Big Bob now?

The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:16:12)

This week, we’re reading The Red Pyramid chapter 8.
Karen gets a flashback to The Land Before Time.
    Poor Philip of Macedonia.
How cool (and stressful) would it be to have a little shabti go retrieve the actual artifacts you’re looking for?

We also catch up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including the cover, synopsis, and release date for A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 7! Remember, we’re keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and updates (00:03:32)

Karen regales Kristen with her tale of visiting the Field Museum in Chicago and going through the Ancient Egypt exhibit.
Happy birthday to Toby Stephens, who will play Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Did you catch the A Drop of Venom cover reveal? Sajni Patel’s first book for Rick Riordan Presents is going to be a stunner!
Do Hades and Persephone have good advice for long-distance relationships?
We also get to meet Gorgyra, who will show up in The Sun and the Star.
Could Bear McCreary be working on Percy Jackson and the Olympians?
This is also your reminder that Ballad & Dagger is now out in paperback!

The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones + Interview with Ethan Young (00:09:59)

Neither Kristen nor Karen had read The 39 Clues before, so this was a good time to check out the story via the graphic novel.
Did you think there were 39 books in this series? If so, you’re not alone (or that far off)!
Sarwat Chadda wrote a book in The 39 Clues series!
Will there ever be a movie (or television) adaptation?
We give you a brief overview of what happens to kick off The Maze of Bones.
Would we take the money or take the clue?
If you like National Treasure, there’s no way you wouldn’t love The 39 Clues series.
This series is a lot more global, which makes for a lot of interesting adventures.
Plus, all the different clans and family members made everything a lot trickier!
We both totally want to keep reading the graphic novels to find out what happens next!
Make sure you check out the 39 Clues website!
Now it’s time to talk to Ethan Young, who adapted and illustrated The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan.
Are there any designs that really stand out to him after all these years?
What’s the most important part of tackling the kinds of projects he’s done in the past?
Is there ever any time for personal artwork outside of commissions?
    How does Ethan avoid burnout?
What made Ethan interested in adapting The Maze of Bones?
What is the process like for adapting a book into a graphic novel?
We’re so lucky to have smart phones these days.
Was Rick involved in the process of adapting this at all?
Why are graphic novels so important for people who love (or maybe don’t love) to read?
Which of the characters were Ethan’s favorite to illustrate?
Did Ethan have a favorite location?
We also take some time to talk about the potential sequel to Maze of Bones and whether Ethan will be attached to future adaptations.
Who would Ethan want to have as a godly parent?
Which graphic novels does he recommend? What about artists to watch?
We take some time to shout out all the amazing Percy Jackson fan artists!
If you remember being on MySpace, you might be old…
What are some of Ethan’s dream projects?
And what else does he having coming up next?

The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:02:22)

This week, we’re reading The Red Pyramid chapter 7.
Carter and Sadie are definitely very different people.
Muffin is like a canary in a coal mine, and Kristen is paying attention.
Sadie was a little scary in this chapter!
Carter should’ve been WAY more cautious about curses and booby traps.
Why do Egyptians walk the way they do?
There seems to be a lot more going on inside Doughboy than most gollum-type creatures.
Do we really think Julius is dead?
Did you know how to pronounce cartouche?
What would you do if you found out you were descended from the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt?

Spin-off pjo book

It seems like you are going to be covering all of the spin-off books (demigod files, etc.) are you also going to be covering Percy Jackson and the singer of Apollo? I don’t think it was as popular as the other ones, but does take place before the second series

llama gonzales ,

Love it

Love this podcast so helpful with the Percy Jackson tv show
So fun too
Totally recommend too
And the merchandise episode…. Yes I really hope they make some of their ideas

RyGaHo ,

Great for any PJO fan during the work day

Started listening from episode 1 roughly a month ago when I began rereading the og series. Now I’m on episode 51 and sad to be almost caught up. These two bring fun discourse to the fandom and are great to listen to during the work day.

I would love to know what other PJO podcasts they recommend!
