Episode #123- Sally Made Him A Hero

Prophecy Radio episode #123 has us excited to chat with Roseanne A. Brown about all things Percy Jackson and the Olympians, including season 1 and what lies ahead in season 2. Amongst a few other things, too (*cough* SERWA *cough*). We also use our news and feedback sections this week to highlight the upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books and to thank you all for your generous support. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:02:30)

Here are your upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books (and their release dates as best we know):

It Waits in the Forest by Sarah Dass (May 14)

The Dark Becomes her by Judy I. Lin (October 1)

*Moko Magic: Carnival Chaos by Tracey Baptiste (Aug 6) (Freedom Fire–Kwame MBalia’s imprint)

Pahua and the Dragon’s Secret by Lori M. Lee (Sept 10)

Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Saving the World by Roseanne A. Brown (Nov 5)

    A Conversation with Roseanne A. Brown(00:07:17)

Welcome Rosanne! We are so excited to geek out over Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 with you.
Roseanne is very happy about how PJO season 1 turned out. And she acknowledges how hard adventures shows can be to get right.
We talk about all our favorite moments and characters.
Our most unexpected moments means we are once again gushing over Grover Underwood. (I have a feeling this is gonna keep happening, folks.)
It’s important to acknowledge that nothing is perfect, so we also touch on items we would change a little bit, if we had such power.
TYSON! TYSON! TYSON! We are all super excited to see Percy’s brother make his appearance, especially since his role is so pivotal to the story.
There are also tons of moments we’re looking forward to seeing, from tentpole to tender.
We want to see Percy working on his fighting, both swordsmanship and harnessing the power of the ocean.
If Percy Jackson and the Olympians inspires some competition, we hope it comes in the form of diverse mythologies. (And I mean, there’s a whole imprint’s worth just waiting for their chance in the sun.)
Serwa may (or may not) be coming out on November 5th, 2024, but stick here for all the latest updates, because that is one story we are DYING to get our hands on
We lose our cool a little, telling Rosie about how much we love the Serwa Boateng series.
Time to beg a little for a teaser detail or two for Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Saving the World, and Rosie kindly DELIVERS.
Writing a book 3 is tough work.
There aren’t any projects on the horizon that Rosie can tell us about right now, but she does regale us with a list of all kinds of books she’s been reading lately. (Some are adult titles, so consider yourselves warned!)

    Episode #122 – Hera Coded

    Episode #122 – Hera Coded

Prophecy Radio episode #122 sits down with a surprise guest to talk about A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel. We also get a newbie’s reaction to Percy Jackson season 1, including what questions they still had after the final credits rolled. There’s also some important Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news to discuss, including our dreams coming true with the announcement of a Funko line, as well as some listener feedback from the past couple weeks. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:03:09)

Give a big, warm welcome to our friend Danielle, who we’re so excited to have on the show for the first time!
Did you see that we’re getting Percy Jackson Funkos!?
Perhaps even more surprising—we’re getting a Percy Jackson cookbook, too!
Oh, hey, Luke Arnold from Black Sails would make for an excellent addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
We pick Danielle’s brain about Percy Jackson season 1 considering she’s never read the books!
What improvements would she like to see in season 2?

A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel (00:20:15)

If you’re not mentally prepared for this discussion, please take care of yourself and either skip it or come back later!
How familiar were we with Medusa’s story and/or Indian mythology?
What were our overall thoughts on A Drop of Venom?
Let’s talk about Manisha and what a nagin is.
And we can’t forget about Noni!
Then there’s Pratyush, who’s a slayer because, well, his father was a slayer.
We liked that Sajni didn’t ignore the struggles men also have thanks to societal norms and pressures.
But did anyone else think he was a little sus in the beginning?
We talk explicitly about Manisha’s rape and how it was depicted on the page.
There are no words for how angry Sita’s betrayal made us.
The victim blaming in this book is, unfortunately, a reflection of real life.
It’s important not to use passive language when talking about violence against marginalized groups.
Was the General just Hera in disguise!?
He really should’ve made sure Manisha was dead.
This was not the only sexual assault in the book.
It’s important for men to stand up against other men when they are participating in rape culture.
We loved Dev, but he was pretty intense!?
    Girls have to stick together!
Menstruation is totally normal and we should talk about it more.
Did you figure out who the three elders represented?
We LOVED that this book talked about the subjectivity of monstrosity, just like Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1.
Is Pratyush as much of a “monster” as Manisha?
    Embrace your darkness!

The spoiler section begins at 1:20:12.
    Did the general suffer enough?
How did we feel about the “love story” between Manisha and Pratyush?
Thank GOODNESS Noni is still alive.
We have a couple guesses as to what the next book will be about, and even what the title might be!

    Feedback (00:52:50)

Steph agrees that Aryan Simhadri IS Grover Underwood.
Reilly also agrees that the video we posted in our IG stories needed to have a wedding dress for Grover.

Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 123, in which we’ll have a chat with Roseanne A. Brown about Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as her upcoming book, Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Saving the World!

    Episode #121 - Grover's Turn

    Episode #121 - Grover's Turn

Prophecy Radio episode #121 is our chance to give you all our highlights from Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We hit on our favorite moments, favorite characters, and talk a bit about what we would change if we had the chance. We also talk about the major Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news, including Leah Sava Jeffries’ big win at the NAACP Image awards, as well as read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:02:34)

Leah won the NAACP Image award!
She is so deserving, it’s not even funny.
Hopefully this is just the first of many… we’re looking at you, Emmy Awards.
There’s a new boxset with the first book in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, The Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo.
It’s the perfect gift for old Rick Riordan fans to give to new readers in their lives.
Stacey Lee (beloved author of Winston Chu vs. The Whimsies) has a new book coming out April 23 called Kill Her Twice.
It’s a murder mystery set in 1932 Los Angeles Chinatown.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 favorites wrap up (00:15:13)

Overall feelings for season 1? (Spoiler Alert: We liked it.)
We have similar thoughts on our favorite episode.
Kristen got into the doc first and stole all the best answers.
    We’re big fans of impertinence.
We’re sensing a theme: We’re big fans of the show’s portrayal of Grover.
There are some strong feelings about our favorite gods this season.
    What surprised us the most?
Let’s face it, we all wanted season 1 to be a million episodes, but eight still felt a little short to us.
If we were in charge, what would we have changed about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1?

    Feedback (00:52:50)

You guys had some really wonderful reactions to our adjustments to the podcast structure. Thanks for hanging with us as we find a new normal.
Ensign Davies reminds us that an animated Kane Chronicles adaptation would not be the death of crossover potential.

Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 122, in which we’ll be talking all things A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel, and maybe have a guest host stop by for the discussion!

    Episode #120 - Life Lessons

    Episode #120 - Life Lessons

Prophecy Radio episode #120 explains where we’ve been over the last couple weeks before discussing the Percy Jackson and the Olympians documentary “A Hero’s Journey.” We’ve got plans to restructure the podcast a little bit, but don’t worry! We’re not going anywhere, and we have some awesome episodes planned. We tackle the biggest Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news, including the season 2 renewal and the Kane Chronicles cancellation, as well as read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:02:03)

Where the heck have we been over the last couple weeks?
Life is tough, but we’re getting through it.
We’re restructuring the podcast a little bit, and we think it’ll be better than ever!
We discuss some of our plans for upcoming episodes.
Let’s get into the news, shall we?
Yes, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been renewed for season 2.
We touch on some of the highlights about season 2 that we know so far.
Unfortunately, the Kane Chronicles movie will not be going forward at Netflix.
Did you know there’s Percy Jackson merch at Barnes & Noble?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians documentary “A Hero’s Journey” (00:30:53)

Did the Percy Jackson documentary live up to our expectations?
It was so awesome seeing the fans at NYCC. We even saw a familiar face! (Or, rather, a familiar hat!)
We’re kind of obsessed with Andrew the acting coach.
Along with the Volume—but that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Walker is gonna be a huge action star some day.
Aryan’s energy is the best—he’s so humble and genuine!
It was really cool seeing everyone’s parents.
Virginia Kull definitely made us cry!
What would we want to see in a season 2 documentary?

    Feedback (00:59:18)

You told us which moments from Sea of Monsters you’re most looking forward to seeing on screen.
We also took a poll to see how you’d like Kane Chronicles to be adapted.

Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 121, in which we’ll discuss Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 as a whole!

Episode #119 - Smile Through the Pain

Episode #119 - Smile Through the Pain

Prophecy Radio episode #119 discusses Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 8, “The Prophecy Comes True.” What did we think of the Percy Jackson season 1 finale? Did Zeus live up to his reputation? Is it possible the show actually made us like Poseidon?? We also tackle the latest Percy Jackson news, including the cover for The Dark Becomes Her by Judy I. Lin, and read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:03:39)

We JUST recorded our last episode, but we’ve got a couple pieces of news we wanted you to check out.
First and foremost, be sure to look at the beautiful and terrifying cover for The Dark Becomes Her by Judy I. Lin.
The Percy Jackson team also has a cross-country quest going on. Be sure to keep an eye on their Instagram for more details.
Apparently the guy who played Crusty was also in the Lightning Thief movie!
Did you see the footage of the trio at Disney World?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 8, “The Prophecy Comes True” (02:05:00)

We now live in a post-Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 world.
They really just punched us in the gut with that opening line, didn’t they?
When did that training scene take place?
This was a great segue back into the Ares fight.
Someone really needs to get Annabeth up to speed.
Percy and Ares certainly know how to get under each other’s skin.
Does it make sense that Percy was holding his own against the god of war?
Ares found out exactly what Perseus Jackson is capable of!!
Adam Copeland is literally perfect in this role.
How come they heard Sally’s voice as soon as Annabeth picked up the helmet?
Did Percy offer the helm in good faith in the hopes that it would score him some bonus points with Hades?
Alecto has a lot of reverence for Hades and his artifacts.
It’s probably not the smartest idea for Percy to walk into Olympus, but he’s done running from monsters.
THE LOOK ON PERCY’S FACE AS ANNABETH GIVES HIM HER NECKLACE.
Luke is so excited Percy is picking up what he’s putting down.
Did Luke betray Annabeth by telling Percy she’s afraid of spiders?
Why didn’t we get to see what book the security guard was reading!?
Did you catch all the different architecture that makes up Olympus?
Why did Percy have to climb that hill??
The silence as Percy handed over the bolt was SO LOUD.
We’re obsessed with Lance’s portrayal of Zeus and the musicality of his delivery.
It maybe wasn’t the smartest thing in the world to stand up to Zeus, but the guy really needed to hear what Percy had to say.
Poseidon surrenders in order to save his son!!
And he gets a little manipulative by bringing up Thalia’s bravery and how it inspired Percy to do the right thing with the bolt.
We loved hearing the Ancient Greek.
Oh, Zeus, you’re gonna be seeing A LOT of Percy going forward.
The meeting between Percy and Poseidon very nearly broke us.
The sea does not like to be restrained.
Poseidon’s face when Percy asks if he dreams about Sally–OMG.
That was an unceremonious exit if we ever saw one.
Was Percy supposed to end up in the ocean?
He’s a whole different person now, and Camp must feel like a totally different place.
    Were those the Stohl Brothers!?
Annabeth has changed a lot too!!
When did Annabeth figure out that Luke was the one who betrayed them?
It was very helpful when Percy went back through the prophecy line by line.
Luke really didn’t want Grover to get hurt.
It’s SO easy to empathize with Luke’s feelings, even if we don’t agree with his actions.
Did you catch the glint in his eye??
Anyone else forget that Backbiter could open portals??
Luke does NOT want to hear Percy’s excuses for the gods.
What did that letter H represent?
    Percy’s got some smooth moves!
Poor, poor Annabeth. At least Luke knows not to take her on, too.
Kronos might be very, very persuasive, but Percy is very, very stubborn.
We’re glad we got to see

    Episode #118 – Emotional Damage

    Episode #118 – Emotional Damage

Prophecy Radio episode #118 discusses Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 7, “We Learn the Truth, Sort Of.” How was Jay Duplass as Hades, and what did the Underworld look like? Was Cerberus as cute as we were promised? And can Percy please stop being so self-sacrificing for, like, two seconds!? We also tackle the latest Percy Jackson news and read a few pieces of listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13.

    News and Updates (00:04:55)

We wish Daniel José Older a belated happy birthday!

A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel is out now, and we WILL be discussing it next month.
Did you see the Wrath of the Triple Goddess covers posted on Rick’s blog?
The synopsis sounds amazing, and we can’t wait to read this one!

The Hollywood Reporter gives us some important stats regarding Percy Jackson and the Olympian‘s current streaming ratings.
Make sure you watch the BTS video for episode 5 and check out the poster for episode 6..
Did you know that Augustus from Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6 was named after the Black Sails character?
In case you missed the big news, there WAS a Bianca and Nico di Angelo reference in the last episode.
Rick also gives us some additional information about this scene on Goodreads.
He also talks about what he wants to do for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 7, “We Learn the Truth, Sort Of” (00:24:17)

What did we think about this episode overall?
Spoiler alert: We’re still trying to figure out how we feel about the Crusty’s scene.
Are we okay with the kids knowing a lot more than they did in the book?
    What was the secret code?
Crusty’s little monologue hints at what else is to come in this episode.
Are we sad he didn’t get his head chopped off?
There have been some top-tier quotes this season, and we may need to rank them at some point.
That stress ball does a lot of heavy lifting this episode.
Wait, is Annabeth more concerned about Percy’s mom than the quest!?
Sally gets mad in the first scene of the flashback, and we kind of love it.
So, like, the first movie Percy is showing Annabeth is The Wizard of Oz, right?
Percy is such a city kid, and we love it.
Is Charon supposed to look like the figure in the vision?
Was that Janus on his staff?
Um, did Cerberus just eat Grover!?
Annabeth is such a badass, but of course we already knew that.
Did anyone else think she was gonna throw up once they pulled her up the edge of the cliff?
We get SUPER MAD about how the principal of Percy’s new school treats him.
Homeschooling is not an option for everyone!!
Percy refuses to blame Grover for losing one of the pearls.
We love him so much, but could he be a little less self-sacrificing!?
The Fields of Asphodel are very creepy.
    What does Annabeth regret!?
Also, can we talk for a minute about the part where she says she trusts Percy’s dad!?
You know a place has bad vibes when the giant three-headed dog won’t follow you out there.
Who else thought Percy might chop off Grover’s legs? Just Kristen?? Okay.
If we don’t admit that’s the master bolt then it can’t be true!!
    Everyone loves Sally!
Although Young Percy says some very mean things to her.
    Okay, Hades’ Palace is huuuuge.
We’re still trying to figure out how we feel about Jay Duplass as Hades.
    “I seldom cahoot.”
Do we believe Percy figured out it was Kronos?
Percy decides to do the right thing, even though it’s difficult.
How often does Sally get to talk to Poseidon?
Does Zeus know who Percy is?
In an alternate timeline, Percy and Annabeth could’ve been best friends at age seven.
There are so many great quotes in this scene, and we love Toby Stephens as Poseidon!
Why doesn’t Grover get a helping hand!?
Ares is going down, one way or another!

    Feedback (02:03:31)

Liz O is very happy we didn’t see the skin seat on Ares’ motorcycle.
Steph says there were no winter solst

Spin-off pjo book

It seems like you are going to be covering all of the spin-off books (demigod files, etc.) are you also going to be covering Percy Jackson and the singer of Apollo? I don’t think it was as popular as the other ones, but does take place before the second series

llama gonzales ,

Love it

Love this podcast so helpful with the Percy Jackson tv show
So fun too
Totally recommend too
And the merchandise episode…. Yes I really hope they make some of their ideas

RyGaHo ,

Great for any PJO fan during the work day

Started listening from episode 1 roughly a month ago when I began rereading the og series. Now I’m on episode 51 and sad to be almost caught up. These two bring fun discourse to the fandom and are great to listen to during the work day.

I would love to know what other PJO podcasts they recommend!
