Daily Dose of Discipline

I did it yesterday.”Nobody wants to be on that plane!Yesterday’s checklist cannot clear today’s flight.Every takeoff brings fresh conditions—a different wind, different weight, different weather. So the instructions have to be walked through again before the wheels ever leave the ground.Now listen again to Proverbs four one:“Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.”That word translated instruction carries the Hebrew idea musar, pronounced moo-SAHR.It means instruction, discipline, correction and formative training.Not punishment for punishment’s sake.Formation.Correction that trains somebody to live wisely.Musar is wisdom looking us in the eye and saying, “Run the checklist again.”And honestly, I need that.See, I wanna treat yesterday’s obedience like rollover minutes.“I prayed yesterday.”“I was grateful last week.”“I forgave them already.”But today has its own weather.Today has its own pressure.Today has its own version of me showing up for the flight.Wisdom isn’t the type of prescription you take once and it’s over. It’s a daily dose.For me, a spiritual preflight looks something like this:Gratitude. What gift have I noticed?Grace. Where do I need to receive it or extend it?Forgiveness. What am I still carrying?God first. What deserves my first attention?Service. Who can I help today?Glory. How can my life point beyond me?Now, I don’t walk through that list because I think God is gonna get mad at me if I miss a box.And it’s not superstition—it’s not a guarantee that no turbulence will hit.The checklist doesn’t control the weather.It prepares me to travel through the weather.Discipline usually isn’t dramatic. It’s the quiet, holy decision to check again, listen again and align again.Because every morning puts another runway in front of us.And yesterday’s checklist cannot clear today’s flight.🔥 REMEMBERDaily discipline prepares today's soul for today's conditions.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, train my attention for today's flight with faithful wisdom.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEBefore your day takes off, walk through your spiritual preflight: gratitude, grace, forgiveness, God first, service and glory. Mock Around and Find Out

Robin Williams made joy and ache share a sentence. Trevor Noah moves between worlds and lets each see itself. Aries Spears turns observation into a whole cast of characters.I’ve long suspected that some of our best comedians feel too much.That’s their problem. They notice too much, but it’s also their genius because they see the same wound from so many angles that they eventually develop antibodies against the poison of their own pain.They take a little pain, shame, anger and courage, then work it until they can laugh at what once threatened to swallow them up…(Have you ever been ‘Swallowed up’?)That’s the strange gift of the court jester.Or, as I once put it in a rhyme:“I’m just a Jesuit dressed up as a jester; jousting with justice just to get in your head-a-bit.”That’s what jesters did. They stood close to power, dressed like fools and told the truth everybody else was afraid to say.But Proverbs three thirty-four flips the entire script. Listen again from the NIV:“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.”A mocker uses laughter to avoid truth, protect pride and cut somebody down. So—is God giving the mocker a taste of his own medicine?God isn’t being petty. God lets the person trapped in pride hear the echo of their own contempt. God opposes the arrogant posture but pours favor on the humble heart.So the question isn’t merely, “Is it funny?”The question is, “What is my laughter serving?”Some jokes heal you up.Some jokes hull you out.Some jokes expose what needs to change.And some jokes are just cruelty with good timing.If I can laugh at everybody but myself, I’m probably not walking in wisdom. Good humor begins when I’m honest enough to see the pain, humble enough not to weaponize it and courageous enough to tell the truth with grace, even if it sheds light on my own mess.Comedy can become confession.A punchline can become a mirror.And through wisdom, a jester can ‘joust with justice’ and help the whole room face the truth.🔥 REMEMBERHumility turns humor from a weapon into a window for truth.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, humanize my humor and make my truth-telling gracious always.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEBefore you joke, post or comment today, pause and ask: “Is this serving truth, healing or my ego?” Use one honest laugh to open a heart—not wound one.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer. When?? THEN!!

Proverbs 2:9“Then you will understand righteousness and justice in every circumstance, and integrity and every good path.”“Are we there yet?”If you’ve ever taken a road trip with children, you’ve felt that question in your nervous system.When our kids were young, we traveled across the country while I preached the gospel. We played games, sang songs, counted cars—anything to keep some peace in that back seat.Because I was trying to get to the next city to preach the gospel without losing my religion before I got there!“Are we there yet?”A hundred times.Kids don’t care how many miles are left. They want to know when.Truth is, grown souls ask the same question.When am I going to stop struggling with this?When will doing right start feeling natural?When will I become the person I keep praying to be?Listen to Proverbs two nine from the Amplified version:“Then you will understand righteousness and justice in every circumstance, and integrity and every good path.”Did you hear the first word?Then.Then means wisdom is taking you somewhere.But this Proverb doesn’t give us some magic “then” hanging in midair. Before the then, the chapter stacks up a whole row of ifs: receive wisdom, treasure instruction, listen, ask and search for it like silver.This isn’t about earning God’s love. You’re already deeply loved by God.This is about formation.Practice changes what your soul recognizes.That’s the question coming from the back seat of my soul. My immature soul is asking my hands, “Are we there yet? Can we do right without being reminded?”It’s asking my feet, “Are we there yet? Can we recognize the good path before we take another detour?”It’s asking my heart, “Justice in every circumstance—or only when it’s convenient?”Proverbs says there is a then—a place where righteousness, justice and integrity become more than rules posted on the dashboard.They become the road you know.Not perfection.Formation.Grace doesn’t cancel the journey. Grace keeps teaching us how to travel.Every faithful if becomes another mile marker:Receive.Treasure.Listen.Ask.Search.And one day, wisdom answers the question:WHEN??THEN!!🔥 REMEMBERFaithful practice keeps carrying your soul from “when” toward “then.”🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, form my instincts until wisdom becomes my natural path.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGERead Proverbs two one through nine. Circle every “if” and “then.” Choose one practice—receive, treasure, listen, ask or search—and live it today. Accessorize and Coordinate

Proverbs 1:9“They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”“You got to coordinate!”If you’ve seen Boomerang, you can probably hear John Witherspoon preaching that wild dinner-table fashion sermon. Everything was loud. Everything matched. And the outfit…was outrageous!The scene is hilarious because we’ve all seen somebody wearing good pieces that somehow refused to work together. Shoes speaking one language. Shirt speaking another. Belt over there freestyling.But Proverbs one nine says wisdom knows how to coordinate a life.“They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”And that “they” points back to Mama and Daddy’s wisdom in the verse before. Wisdom you can wear!Now let me add one more accessory—this is a little something I’ve been working on for quite a while, and I just think it’s the right fit… I’m sprinkling in a little bit of “Tha Script”—bam! Tha Script is my hip-hop rendering of the entire book of Proverbs, verse by verse. It holds onto the ancient meaning of the text while letting it move with rhythm and rhyme:“Every one o’ them axioms is grace maximum—accessorizing your character like a cap-to-dome or chain-to-neck platinum.”It’s not replacing Scripture; it’s helping Scripture stick.Wise teaching isn’t meant to stay in your notes. You wear it. People should see it in how you speak and how you treat them.Biblical wisdom doesn’t accessorize your ego.It coordinates your character.That’s soulish fashion!Not looking the part without living the part. Not spiritual costume jewelry covering ugly behavior. Wisdom makes the inner life and outer life match. It coordinates what you know with how you move.Your beliefs and behavior: same outfit.Your prayer and practice: same colorway.Your Sunday confession and Tuesday conduct: coordinated.Because it’s possible to quote wisdom and still clash with it.Real wisdom makes you look better because it makes you live better.John Witherspoon was right: you got to coordinate! Not just your shoes and belt, but your character and confession. The Holy Spirit is saying, “Match it up!”🔥 REMEMBERWisdom looks best when your character and confession coordinate.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, make what I believe match the way I live.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEPick one piece of wisdom and wear it today through one visible action. Calling All Mama's Boys

Proverbs 31:1“The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.”Calling all Mama’s boys!I’m a Mama’s boy to the bone—and I say that publicly as a grown man who considers himself a manly man.Fellas, loving your mama doesn’t make you less of a man. It means recognizing the woman who helped make the man.My story goes deeper than I can tell here.My father came home from Vietnam 100% disabled, carrying wounds from war and wounds that began long before it. I was the first of his children he physically and sexually abused.He was wounded—and he wounded me. But it didn’t stop with me.I can hold compassion for what happened to him—without hiding the truth about what he did to me—he had been abused by his father. His wounds may explain the cycle, but they do not excuse the harm. Compassion should never require survivors to soften the truth.When my mother realized her children were being victimized, she got us out.My mother didn’t only give me life.My mother saved my life.That’s why she’s my hero—and why Proverbs thirty-one one hits me differently:“The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.”Proverbs thirty-one opens with a king carrying his mother’s voice.King Lemuel got the title. Mama’s words made the text!Scripture doesn’t call her counsel soft, sentimental or secondary. It calls it an inspired utterance. Lemuel speaks as a king who wears the crown, but we hear the son whose mother “got in his head” and taught him to carry that kind of power.I’ve lived long enough to realize that every mother-story isn’t safe or tender. Some found mothering through a grandmother, auntie, teacher, church mother, mentor—or someone who protected them when their biological mother couldn’t.The point isn’t to romanticize motherhood.It’s to recognize the life-giving wisdom that helped form you—and refuse to be ashamed of where you received it.Being a Mama’s boy doesn’t mean being immature, dependent or unable to decide.It can mean you’re man enough to honor the woman whose courage, counsel and sacrifice helped you become wise.So, calling all Mama’s boys!Stand up! Come out of hiding.Walk in the wisdom your Mama gave you.Let your life show that Mama didn’t teach you all that for nothing.Proverbs 31:1🔥 REMEMBERBefore Lemuel wore the crown, his mother’s wisdom shaped the king.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, let my life honor the wisdom love gave me.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEName one life-giving lesson you received from your mother—or someone who mothered you. HIDE AND SEEK

Proverbs 30:5“Every promise from the faithful God is pure and proves to be true. He is a wraparound shield of protection for all his lovers who run to hide in him.”Er’body knows about Hide and Seek! If you from my hood, you might remember playin’ “Hide and Go Get It.” But I digress.Back to the PG version of the game: somebody counted while everybody else ran to hide.The point wasn’t to stay missing forever. You hid because you knew somebody was coming for you.That’s what makes Proverbs 30:5 feel like sacred play to me. The way The Passion Translation says it:“Every promise from the faithful God is pure and proves to be true. He is a wraparound shield of protection for all his lovers who run to hide in him.”It was that last part for me: lovers who run to God and hide in God! Ahhh!!!In this version of Hide and Seek, God hasn’t lost us—God Himself is the hiding place!Notice what happens: a promise becomes a place.When life gets loud or threatening, God’s faithful word becomes shelter for the soul—not to avoid reality, but to get wrapped in something truer than the threat that’s challenging us.That “wraparound shield” has no blind side. God’s faithfulness reaches the places I can see—and the places I can’t see!That doesn’t mean nothing painful can reach us. It means nothing can push us beyond the reach of God’s faithful presence.Now, hiding can become unhealthy. We hide from hard conversations, grief, responsibility or the truth about ourselves.But hiding in God is different.It’s not disappearing from life. It’s finding shelter until you can face life again.Step away from the noise. Breathe. Pray. Sit inside His promises until your nervous system remembers: fear is present, but fear is not all that’s present.And here’s the beautiful mystery: we hide in the One from whom we could never be hidden.God already knows where anxiety found us—the wound, the question and the thing we’re afraid to say out loud.And while we’re hidden there, God may uncover what fear buried inside us—courage, peace, wisdom or strength for the next step.So yes, beloved, go play hide-and-seek today.Seek the God who is already seeking you.Then hide inside the promise until you remember you’ve already been found.🔥 REMEMBERThe safest hiding place is inside the God who has already found you.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, wrap me in truth until I can face today.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEChoose a promise you already love—or one you need today. Turn off the noise for five minutes, breathe slowly and repeat it. Who Gets Remembered After the Storm?

Proverbs 29:14“The best insurance for a leader’s longevity is to demonstrate justice for the poor.”Twenty-one years ago today, August 29th, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana.More than 80% of New Orleans flooded. Over 1,800 people died. Families were displaced, neighborhoods were devastated and institutional failures were exposed in real time.Four days later, Kanye West stood beside Mike Myers during a live NBC relief telethon.Mike read the script.Kanye…did not.He looked into the camera and said, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.”Mike Myers’s face became its own emergency broadcast.And let me correct my own memory: I thought President Obama later called Kanye a jackass over this.Nope.Obama called him a “jackass” four years later—after the Taylor Swift incident. Apparently, my brain filed all the Kanye controversies in one folder.And yes, somebody just put “jackass” in a devotional. Technically, a donkey made it into the Bible first. Stay focused.But that correction reveals something serious: celebrity controversies blur together while survivors become background.Kanye’s sentence named real racial pain—but it also reduced a systemic failure to a claim about one man’s heart. America argued over whether President Bush personally cared while people still needed rescue, food, housing and a way home.Proverbs 29:14 from The Passion Translation gives us a better leadership test:The best insurance for a leader’s longevity is to demonstrate justice for the poor.We don’t have to read a leader’s heart. We can examine the actions.Who had a way out before the storm?Who waited longest for help?Whose neighborhood was rebuilt?Whose voice disappeared when the cameras left?Disasters don’t create every inequality. Sometimes they pull the roof off and expose what was already underneath.And this isn’t political team sports. A leader’s party, race or public sympathy can’t substitute for whether vulnerable people were treated fairly.I don’t want to use Katrina as scenery for a clever lesson. I have family members who were displaced from that storm, and you may too. We honor those who died, those who were displaced and the communities that rescued neighbors, rebuilt homes and carried New Orleans forward.Storms pass.Water recedes.Cameras leave.But communities remember those leaders who heard them—and those leaders who left them standing in the floodwater.That’s where leadership gains or loses its authority.🔥 REMEMBERLeadership is tested by whether justice reaches people stranded in floodwater.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, make my leadership fair, attentive and accountable to everyone.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGESupport one accountable organization serving disaster recovery, housing or poverty relief. Justice Ain’t Just Us

Proverbs 28:5“Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the LORD understand completely.”On this date in 1963, roughly 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.History remembers the speeches, songs, signs and sea of people surrounding the Lincoln Memorial.But before it became history, it was somebody’s decision:Go take a stand for justice—or stay home and wait for a better day.Those marchers couldn’t know how the day would be remembered. They knew something was wrong—and standing on the “side of right” required movement.And I need to confess something.On October 16, 1995, my brother invited me to the Million Man March.I didn’t go.My uneasiness as a Christian about the Nation of Islam’s leader Minister Farrakhan kept me home watching the entire event on television.Even then, something inside me knew: Dang. I missed a moment.Three decades later, I can respect religious differences in others without surrendering my own personal conviction—and admit that religious rigidity kept me from standing with fellow Black men gathering for unity, responsibility and change.If I could speak to my younger self, I’d say, let go of your pride. Go. Be there.Proverbs 28:5 says:Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the LORD understand completely.Following God doesn’t give us perfect politics. But it should train us to recognize what’s right and respond even when it costs something.Understanding justice isn’t merely defining it. It’s recognizing when justice is demanding something from you, regardless of the cost.Eventually, justice develops feet.It gathers.It stands, walks and marches.It speaks, shouts and sings.It takes up space where taking up space costs something.Justice ain’t just us—our denomination, our doctrine, our political party or circle of comfort. What is right may call us to stand beside people we don’t agree with about everything.Discernment still matters. Every march is not righteous and every coalition is not wise. We get that.But sometimes what we call discernment is really cheap grace searching for a theological excuse to avoid the cost of standing up.History remembers the people who showed up. It rarely records all the private reasons others stayed home.Don’t wait until history makes a struggle safe before deciding it deserved your presence.Justice often unsettles comfortable people because somebody else has been broken and uncomfortable for far too long.And if you still don’t understand why people gather, march, speak, shout and take up space—maybe Proverbs is right.Maybe you just don’t understand justice…yet.🔥 REMEMBERJustice understood deeply enough eventually grows feet.🙏🏽 PRAYERGod, lead me beyond comfort to stand for what’s right.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEPut justice on its feet: contact one local organization doing work you believe in and ask, “Where can I show up?” Put one date on your calendar today.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
