Episode 184: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Welcome Back Radical Ones! ⚡️ This week on Radical Retro Rewind?!, Ryan and David officially kick off Star Wars Summer with one of the most anticipated movies of all time…“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” from 1999! After 16 years without a new live-action Star Wars film, the hype surrounding Episode I was absolutely unreal. From Pepsi cups and Taco Bell promotions to packed toy aisles, VHS previews, posters everywhere, green fruit snacks, and even Jar Jar tongue lollipops, this movie became a full-blown cultural event before it even hit theaters. From podracing and Darth Maul’s double lightsaber to Duel of the Fates, Queen Amidala’s insane costumes, and early CGI spectacle, the Radical Retro Brothers revisit the movie that changed blockbuster filmmaking forever. And yes… we absolutely discuss whether the podrace still holds up, that R2-D2 has always been sassy, and the bizarre behind-the-scenes fact that Michael Jackson reportedly wanted to physically play Jar Jar Binks in full costume rather than through CGI. “In Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to settle a growing conflict involving the Trade Federation and the peaceful planet of Naboo. Along the way they encounter a clumsy outcast named Jar Jar Binks, a young queen hiding in plain sight, and a gifted slave boy named Anakin Skywalker whose connection to the Force may change the fate of the galaxy forever. As political tensions rise and a mysterious Sith warrior named Darth Maul emerges from the shadows, the stage is set for a new generation of Star Wars adventures.” Stars: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best & Ray Park.
