RAPID&BEYOND

Episode 11 (english) - Euro Rapid Surf: Inside the new judging system with Head Judge Eric Zbären

The first ever official European Championship in Rapid Surfing is about to go down - the Euro Rapid Surf 2026. Not only is the event itself a significant step for this young and still niche sport, but also the development of the underlying judging system. Just like in Ocean Surfing, behind every score there is a complex process of evaluating a surfers performance. However, rapid waves provide a different and more stable environment. Therefore, the judging has been adapted to that over the past years. In this episode, I sit down with Eric Zbären, head judge of Swiss Surfing and the upcoming Euro Rapid Surf, to take a closer look behind the scenes. In addition to his several years of experience as a judge, Eric was a key contributor to the development and implementation of the new Euro Rapid Surf judging format - the CVE. We talk about how judging actually works, how the new European judging system was developed and the function of its main components: Commitment, Variety and Execution (yep that’s what CVE stands for). We also discuss judging benchmarks, the judge selection process for the Euros, the balance between experienced and new judges, and one of the more controversial topics, like the 25-second rule and how to balance risk and progression with consistency and fairness. All of this makes Episode 11 a behind the scenes look at how Rapid Surf judging has evolved, where it stands today, and what it might need in the future to fairly represent the sport. . . 📸 Ondrej Kolacek

Episode 10 (english) - CouchTalk with Gilbert: From Singapore to Team Europe

Uhhh premiere: the first english episode!!! It’s around midnight on the last day of our trip for the Continental Surf Cup 2026. Team Europe had just finished a BBQ and we’d had a few beers. I actually had planned to ask Gilbert to do an episode beginning oft he week…but you know…it got busy, we were surfed out…and sometimes you are just too lazy. However, i really did not wanna miss this opportunity. So I asked: Gilly, should we still record taht epidsode?? “Right now?!” Yep. So we grabbed two more beers, set everything up in Gilbert’s bedroom and just went for it. Gilbert Yeh Zhi Hui is from Singapore and surfs at the citywave there. Together with two others, he has been developing a coaching concept for Rapid Surfing from scratch – in a part of the world where the sport is still very new. Rapid Surfing is still pretty new in Asia, so Gilbert and others are looking towards Europe for inspiration through social media, videos and the people they meet. But a lot of what he knows today, he had to figure out himself. In this episode, we talk about his journey from skateboarding and wakesurfing into Rapid Surfing, building the scene in Singapore and what it’s like to develop a sport when there are only a few waves and not much existing knowledge around. We also get his perspective on European Rapid Surfing, the differences in style, why European surfers are so good at adapting to new waves, and which surfers and manoeuvres inspire him. Get ready for a relaxed conversation about Rapid Surfing in Asia, building a scene from scratch, different surf styles and how the sport is connecting people across continents. . . 📸 Joshi Holy - shot on the FUjIFILM X-S20
