The Ultimate Guide to 1RMs and Maxing Out

The Ultimate Guide to 1RMs and Maxing Out

Today we're going over the what, why, when, and how of maxing out! There are several reasons you might want to test out your one rep max on main lifts such as squat, bench, deadlift, military press, hip thrust, etc. In this episode we discuss the benefits, outline strategies to effectively work toward a max out, and explain exactly how to approach max out day from warm up sets to safety to execution of the lifts!

Below is a quick sample 11-week program that we mentioned in the episode. For this program you would want to start with a weight that feels like a 7 RPE (or 70% of your 1RM if you've already established it previously) and perform 5 sets of 5 reps. Each week, add 5-10lbs to progressively overload. The built in drops in volume will serve as de-load weeks even though you will continue adding weight each week.

    Week 1: 5x5
    Week 2: 5x5
    Week 3: 5x5
    Week 4: 5x5
    Week 5: 5x5
    Week 6: 3x3
    Week 7: 3x3
    Week 8: 3x3
    Week 9: 2x2
    Week 10: 2x2
    Week 11: Max out!

    The Definitive Guide to RPE

    The Definitive Guide to RPE

Today we're taking you through one of the more confusing parts of following a structured workout program: how to choose your weights! Some programs (like RISE) use RPE, some use RIR, and some use percentages, but the reality is none of these systems are perfect, and there are pros and cons to all of them. Today we deep dive into how to use RPE (rate of perceived exertion) and why it's our favorite method for selecting weights!

So Happy To Have Found Jason and Lauren

I came across Jason and Lauren on Instagram and immediately found their content so friendly, welcoming, and educational. I loved that they made fitness so approachable, emphasized mobility and athleticism and not just aesthetics.

Eventually when I began searching for a new strength training program, I decided to check and see if they had a program, and then found RISE! I’ve been a RISE light member for about 3-4 months or so and I’ve absolutely loved it! I find it to be extremely well put together and the program walkthroughs and demonstration videos are incredibly helpful.

Eventually I found their podcast, Reasonably Fit, and have greatly enjoyed listening to that as well! It’s extremely informative and continues to drive home their overarching message to be “reasonable” when it comes to fitness. It is thoughtful and nuanced and also so easy to listen to as they bring a kindness and light heartedness to each episode.

The “reasonably fit” message really means a lot to me because in the pursuit of health and fitness, I have often been extremely UN reasonable. From extreme restriction to extreme exercise to extreme mindset… it has never been good! But I’m slowly trying to unlearn and relearn what is actually healthy.

Thank you Jason and Lauren. I will continue to be a RISE member and supporter of you both!

Knowledgeable and Relatable

You can tell Jason and Lauren know what they’re talking about and they don’t “dumb it down” - they make the super scientific discussions understandable. I also enjoy their commentary and side stories about family, sickness, etc because it makes the regular obstacles to fitness relatable. I’m happy I found them on instagram and now listen here!
