How (and Why) to Stop Labeling Food as Healthy and Unhealthy
Labeling food as “good” and “bad” sets us up to judge ourselves as good and bad when we eat those foods. And if you’re tired of feeling like food has power over you, letting go of these food judgments is one of the most helpful things you can do.
It’s a tall order though, because we live in a world that constantly sends us messages about how certain foods are “healthy” and other foods are “unhealthy.” It’s even built into the marketing of food products. We’ve got Halo Top ice cream, which is supposed to be seen as a holier-than-thou alternative to regular ice cream, and Skinny Pop popcorn which is marketed as healthier than regular popcorn because it’s lower in calories. It can feel impossible to escape this stuff.
Don’t worry though, because by the end of this episode you’re going to understand how to neutralize your food judgments so that you can truly have peace and freedom with food. Different foods have different nutrients - and that’s a wonderful thing, not something to be afraid of!
So if you’re ready to stop battling food, and stop feeling guilty when you eat a piece of pizza or cake, then hit play and let’s dive in!

A lot of people get started with intuitive eating and body acceptance and end up feeling really stuck. You’re going to learn:

We'll What Does "Reject the Diet Mentality" Actually Mean? (And How Do You DO It?)
Diet culture is everywhere. We hear it from our families, doctors, friends, coworkers, and all over social media, on TV and in the news. It’s like background noise that’s always there.
In this episode I’m talking about one of the most important and foundational things that is going to help you approach your non-diet intuitive eating journey in the most effective way possible.
It’s called “rejecting the diet mentality.”
This might sound familiar, you might have heard it before - because it comes from the book Intuitive Eating from Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In the book they outline the 10 principles of intuitive eating, and principle #1 is “Reject the diet mentality.” They put this principle at the very beginning on purpose. Before you dive headfirst into the eating part of all of this, it’s really important that you do the work to understand your own diet mentality, and so that sneaky diet thoughts don’t interfere with you being able to actually listen to your body when you’re trying to make peace with food.

Wonderful Podcast!!!
I have been “dieting” most of my life. I’m 52 years old and have spent at least 40 years trying to lose weight off and on. I thought my last diet would actually be my last one, finally successful after losing 150 pounds on ww… only to find about 50 of those pounds again in the last few years. I’m tired, frustrated and feel defeated. This podcast has started to breathe new life into me. There have been many episodes that made me teary eyed when Katy said something that struck a chord in my soul. The idea that I could love myself as I am, unconditionally-absolutely revolutionary!! I have jumped around and listened to about 5 episodes, and that was enough to convince me that I’m on the right track. I’m planning on listening to all of them. I have the original intuitive eating book and workbook- and I’m planning on slowly figuring things out. I know this podcast will help guide me through this new approach to the rest of my life.
Excellent Podcast!
I have just listened to the first episode so far and really enjoyed it. Katy has a great way of explaining concepts, making them understandable and relatable. This podcast, in conjunction with the content on her social media account will be beneficial for anyone looking to improve their relationship with food and build trust in their body.
Probably the most practical and relatable one out there. It’s like getting a free course in IE.
Wonderful Resource!
The information Katy presents has been instrumental in my recovery from chronic dieting (and food misery). She offers fresh and informative perspectives that are delivered in a gentle and supportive way. I love that she brings guests onto the show to share their experiences. It really helps the listener identify and feel validated in their own personal struggles. The show is truly empowering and you won’t want to miss the nuggets of wisdom dished out in each episode!
