Very briefly we discover the automatic coping responses our minds and bodies have developed over thousands of years: fighting, fleeing, freezing, submitting, and dissociating. The thalamus acts as a gatekeeper, assessing information for threats and signalling the amygdala. The amygdala, the brain's alarm centre, releases stress hormones to prepare the body for action. The hippocampus, like a filing clerk, compares traumatic memories to determine the level of threat. Understand how trauma memories are stored differently, causing confusion and strong emotions.
