  1. Episode 44: Geoff McGarvey

    Episode 44: Geoff McGarvey

Geoff McGarvey is my guest for episode 44. Anyone familiar with Brent Pearson’s YouTube channel (Brent Pearson) will know Geoff already, as he’s often riding with Brent, and has been responsible for the audio production on a number of Brent’s films.  You can find more information about Geoff's audio post production and original music company, SoundEngine:  Web: SoundEngine The following terms and concepts appear in the episode and may be unfamiliar to anyone not working in audio engineering:  “Kontakt” is a virtual instrument platform & software sampler, developed by the company Native Instruments. A “super”, which is short for “superimposed graphic”, is a technique for generating things like TV or film title sequences without using computer-generated graphics. To “foley” something is to recreate and record everyday sounds, like someone walking/running, opening or closing a door, etc. “MIDI” is the acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, and is a system which allows musical instruments and computers to connect and exchange musical information (e.g. note, pitch, velocity and timing values) – all without transmitting actual audio. “Cubase” is an example of a Digital Audio Workstation or DAW software application. The equivalent in the video/film world are programmes like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. “ProTools” is another DAW and is generally considered to be the reference standard in the professional audio recording world. “Dynamics control” or “dynamic range control” is concerned with controlling the difference between the loudest and quietest sections of an audio recording. Usually it is necessary to limit this difference, and it’s done with a piece of hardware or software called a “compressor”. In any discussion about audio it’s important to understand the difference between audio signal level, typically expressed in Decibels relative to a specific reference, and audio loudness level, which is expressed in LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale). “Loudness” measurements are important as they are intended to reflect how the human ear perceives loudness. The human ear doesn't perceive all frequencies at the same loudness; it's most sensitive to mid-range frequencies (around 2-5 kHz, where speech lies) and less sensitive to very low or very high frequency sounds. A "motza" is Australian slang for a large amount of money. The Reel Riders podcast, in partnership with The Trail and Adventure Motorbike Podcast, has launched the Adventure Motorcycle Film Festival.
