After feeding the 5,000, Jesus said, “I am the true bread.” He was the Master Teacher. As I write this, we are fast approaching an event on everyone’s calendar. God’s prophet Samuel had told Saul to wait for Samuel to come and offer a sacrifice before the battle with the Philistines. When Samuel was late in arriving, Saul took matters in his own hands, offered the sacrifice, and just then, Samuel arrived. Samuel regretfully told Saul that, because of his impatience, God would not let his kingdom become an enduring dynasty. The following is an imaginative retelling of what happens next, from the perspective of Saul’s son, the soldier-prince Jonathan. The following is excerpted from Jared Ellis’s The Warrior’s Rune. Get-rich-quick schemes and get-fit-quick programs excite people looking for maximal payoff with minimal effort. After church, I had a conversation with a man about a Bible professor we both knew from a Christian university who was teaching pro-LGBTQ theology. I voiced my concern about the increasing influence of more progressive professors on local churches. These professors use their influence to weaken a church and lead it away from Jesus’ teachings. One of the people who joined the conversation was a woman I had baptized years earlier and who was now an elder’s wife at the church. “Well, Bobby,” she said, “we want people who live an LGBTQ lifestyle to be totally accepted and involved in our community as a church—because, if we do not, how do we influence them?” Can I push pause on that question? If someone accidentally brought up any passage about sin, judgment, or repentance, these people quickly chastised them as using outdated scare tactics, having no comprehension of true love, aligning themselves with judgmental right-wing legalists, or being so spiritually immature that they just didn’t understand. My deck provides the perfect spectator seat to the herd of deer that frequently visit the back field. I became captivated by a tender fawn, fumbling to climb the bank from the creek to catch up to its mother. In that moment, it was in need of family. This pack comes to graze a couple times a day. Sometimes they wander, sometimes they stampede, and sometimes they frolic and play. Together. I wonder how well they’d fare without one another—especially the young ones. I often wonder the same about the Lord’s disciples. How many times, even unaware, are they in need of family (if only to frolic)? Listen for more... I was wrapped up in all of “my” things, and my tunnel vision didn’t allow me to always see other things that should have been important. I was focused on growing a student ministry, growing as a leader, learning everything I could learn, and honestly, appearing to be a spiritual hero that “my people” couldn’t live without. Even when I scheduled in father-son time, I was often preoccupied with church ministry. Throughout most of my son’s life, my day off has been Tuesday. Most of my friends in ministry take off on Mondays or Fridays, but I’ve always found Tuesday to be a perfect stopping point, allowing me to regroup after the weekend, rest, and then finish the week strong. Because my wife has also worked most of our son’s life, that meant Tuesday became known as “Man Day.” Listen for more...
