Here are three times a church gathering actually is boring—to us and, I want to suggest, to God as well. Smiling through small talk can be boring. In a commercial, a young woman walks up to the counter and tells the older woman behind the counter, “Hello! I’d like to order french fries, a burger, and a milkshake.” The woman behind the counter looks at her very strangely and says, “This is a library.” The young woman looks around at the shelves of books and the people reading at tables. Then she turns back to the librarian, smiles knowingly, and whispers, “I’d like to order French fries, a burger, and a milkshake.” She missed the point. Smiling through small talk misses the point of church. Church was never meant to be a place to pretend that everything’s going “just fine, fine, thanks so much for asking!” Listen for more... Our culture wears those words like a badge of honor. “I’m busy” unfortunately doesn’t just describe our calendars. It can also describe our hearts. This is as true for ministers as it is for anyone. As I mentioned in a previous article, this can be due to a minister’s internal drive to please people and/or perform. Being busy is not a bad thing in and of itself. Every song ever sung was new at some point. How many millions of songs of worship have been written in the span of human history? From those that have been published in hymnals, those that are recorded and shared on the internet around the world, and those that have only been shared between the LORD and the worshiper alone—that’s a lot of songs. The contemplation on the extraordinary things that YHWH has done moves us to poetry, not just ordinary language that spews out of our mouths spontaneously, but carefully crafted lyrics that unite with a melody to create something of lasting truth and beauty. Barna Research Group’s 2022 research revealed that 41% of lead ministers have thought about quitting.[1] When they did a follow-up survey in 2023, they saw an encouraging trend with only 33% giving serious consideration to quitting.[2] While that is encouraging, it still means a third of pastors are about to call it quits. Even though it was a rather sedate crowd, that comment got an “Amen!” That reaction tells me two things: 1) Not everyone is going off the rails. Plenty of Christian leaders are aware of the problem and are asking the right questions. 2) The problem is real. The question is: why is lack of transformation so common in American Christianity? On the one hand, the key to transformation should be obvious. We are transformed if and only if we come into the transforming presence of Christ. In Christ, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We can live “in the Spirit” rather than “in the flesh” only “if Christ is in you” (Romans 8:9-10). This is an aspect of the foundational Christian belief that we are saved by grace, not by works. Listen for more... Slavery was assumed to be a necessary part of a functioning society, and slaves could be thought of as living property and tools.[1] An adulterous wife was a disgrace to be dealt with harshly, but men were free (even expected!) to have numerous sexual partners. Unwanted infants were routinely abandoned, left in the wild to die. Care for the poor, weak, and marginalized was laughable to society at large, contrary to all good sense. And a god who would sacrifice himself for others by dying the most shameful death of all could be pictured as a jackass on a cross![2] Listen for more...
