We are starting of the year strong because, Rob and Justin have returned to the show and they are telling us all about Return to Dark Tower. We got the lowdown on how to play, what it took to get the Tower running, and the support behind the game. Once we got that out of the way, we talked about Restoration Games’ plans for 2020 and how they plan to expand their current lineup.

But what would a board game podcast be without talking board games. We discuss games that are coming out in 2020 and games that have been out for a long time. One game, Irish Gauge is currently not available at Capstone to order, but be watching for it at your local game store. More importantly, they will be releasing a Kickstarter for the second game in the series soon.

We got a fairly light show this time. Between broken fingers, house repairs, holidays, we haven’t had the time to sit down and get in some heavy gaming. But never fear, the banter is always here. Thanks to everyone who answered the survey and if you were lucky enough to win something, we will be contacting you in the coming weeks. We did get to play The City from Tom Lehman and enjoyed the simplicity of the game. Sometimes you just need something that takes less than 30 minutes to play and this game does it.

Adam comes back on the show and helps Marty talk about Cities: Skylines and how it compares to the video game. So if you play the video game, maybe Adam can convince you you need the board game as well.

Finally, Marty goes solo and discusses a Stronghold game called Fire! This game is another quick to play and might be a time killer you need while waiting on a friend to show up and get your game night started.

Thanks for listening and please be sure and consider supporting BGG.

Marty goes off to BGG Con and plays tons of games. He comes back and you would think he would be all giddy about a game, but if you have been listening to us long enough, that isn’t going to be the case. He is excited about grit balls. You read correctly, fried balls made of grits. Okay, he was excited about the games.

Paladins of the West Kingdom hurt us. Yeah, that is right, this game but the grey matter through a work out and it was a good work out. This is a great next step in the series and one that needs a few plays to really get a grasp of this game.

The Taverns of Tiefenthan is a lighter deck building, dice drafting, engine building game that might be something to introduce newer games too those particular concepts. Very simple mechanics, quick to learn and not too competitive. Looking forward to more plays of this game with the modules that we will need to discover on our own.

We are joined once again by Ignacy. You would think he would have gotten wise after all these years, but nope, he keeps coming back. This time, he talks to us about a game we have been waiting on for years – Stronghold Undead. It is no exaggeration, we have been waiting for years. Good news, the game is funded, so our wait is almost over. It will still be 2020 before we see it. This is also a very short KS and will be over 11/25/2019, so don’t delay if you are interested in backing it.

Ignacy gives advice on how to not loose so badly in Pret-a-Porter to help us in our next game. He then spoils a new faction for Empires of the North where it is about giving stuff to other players only to reap the benefits for yourself. Ignacy states this is going to be a tough but challenging faction to play and we are looking forward to it.

Thank you for listening and in the next episode, we hear about Marty’s adventurers at BGG Con

RDTN Episode 185: Tabletop Showcase – Klaus and Benny Teuber

Time Segment00:34 Intro03:28 Klaus and Benny Teuber22:35 Rank’em30:23 Thoughts on Starfarers

As part of the Tabletop Showcase Event, we have the honor of talking with Klaus and Benny Teuber. There isn’t a lot of introduction needed here or explanation who they are. It is almost fair to say that if you play board games, own board games, or walk down an aisle with board games, you will see the Teuber name. Do I really need to spell out it for you? Fine, Catan.

Do want to point out that the interview was shorter than we wanted, but we had to catch them between their engagements at Essen. We had too many questions and just hope that we asked ones you would be interested in. We played RDTN Rank’em, which we do with our first time guests, and pay attention because you might get some valuable insight for how to play your next Catan game.

Finally, Marty and I talk about the re-release of Starfarers and our experience. Neither of us have played before and our going in thoughts did not match our thoughts coming out of the play.

Thanks for taking the time in listening to the interview and be sure to check out all the other Tabletop Showcase creations this week.

In this fine episode, we revisit some of our adventures at Marty’s annual BooBQ party and the local con that Mark Kale hosts, Mega Moose Con. During these events, we got to the table a brand new game from Space Cowboys that has found its way onto our shelves and might even be that filler that will be the go to when the chance presents itself. I am talking about Ankh’or and if you looking for a light Splendor type game, give this a try.

We also got to play a proto copy of Stronghold Undead and we give our first thoughts on this game that we have been waiting for for a few years. More on that because Ignacy will be joining us on a later show to give us some more intelligent thoughts than what we can supply.

Adam comes back to the show to share his thoughts on Warhammer’s new Feast of Bones box. He and Marty go all miniature and give the details on what is included in this expansion and their thoughts on if you need to add this to your Warhammer collection.

Boardgames, squirrels & Moonpies oh my

Two great guys that have known each other for decades talking about the games they love, hate, and everything in between...squirrel!...and Moonpies, and life, lawnmowers, and everything.

Fun Show, Awesome Hosts

While they don't take themselves too seriously, Tony and Marty are serious about what they like and don't like when it comes to boardgames, and are obviously great friends, to boot. The Five-Minute Initiatives and Flying Squirrels segments are great for getting a quick sense of a game, while the Scurry Report and longer reviews provide for a more detailed look at gameplay and strategies. Diversions about food and lawn mowers notwithstanding, trequent industry guests demonstrate the true reach of this pair within the boardgame community. Their Squirrelly Awards show is an annual reminder of that, as well as a hilarious celebration of their self-deprecating humor.

One of The Best

If you’re looking for a Boardgame podcast, look no further than here. Marty and Tony are great fun to listen to. They discuss all kinds of board games ( and occasional food, lawnmowers snd music). Once, when I asked my daughter what Boardgame podcast she wanted to listen to on the way to school, she said “The one about the diapers”. Seriously, I look forward to every episode.
