    The Role and Function of Science

    Science is a critical part of contemporary society. It is the main method that we use to determine what is true and how the world functions. Recently, science and its practitioners have been growing more ostracized from the general North American public, both due to politics and elitism. In this episode, Arjun and Spencer set out to dissect this issue in an attempt to understand the role of science in informing reality. With a focus on the practice as a process over a product, it emerges as a tool for creating plausible theories, emphasizing its place not as the arbiter of ultimate truth, but as a self-correcting method continually open to challenge.

    The Cultural Reliance on Stimulants

    Stimulants are a category of drugs that facilitate the transfer of chemical impulses though your cognitive system, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. Although there is a societal stigma against certain types of stimulants (such as cocaine), other stimulants such as caffeine are actively advertised in society. Spencer and Arjun explore the prevalence of stimulants and why they have become so normalized. Their search ranges from possible cognitive models of addiction to the cultural focus on productivity above all else. With caffeine dependence on the rise (Meredith, Juliano, Hughes, and Griffiths, 2013), it's important to understand not only how, but why we might force our brain to focus, even if it's to our own detriment.

    Disinformation in an Increasingly Divided Age

    One of the most effective ways to control a society is by controlling the spread of its information. With the amount of misinformation and disinformation seemingly growing, Spencer and Arjun try to unpack what led us here. They discuss the media, political partisanship, cognitive biases, and the mindset we may need to cultivate to overcome this hurdle. It looks like critical thinking and rationality will be indispensable for keeping us grounded and guiding us through this mess.
