Seattle's Century Ballroom is hanging up its dancing shoes

Century Ballroom is in its last months of operation. It’s one of Seattle’s longest-running social dance venues, with the first classes gliding across the ballroom in 1997. WA is getting whooped by whooping cough

Seattle’s top public safety issue? Transportation

Mayor Bruce Harrell said on Friday that public safety is his administration’s “highest priority.” In city hall, that’s included a lot of talk about policing and crime. But according to a study of Seattle residents, the biggest public safety issue in people’s lives is actually traffic safety. Jacqueline Helfgott – Seattle University Professor and Director of the school’s Crime & Justice Research Center – breaks down the results of the Seattle Public Safety Survey and the various ways safety shows up in our lives. The 2024 Seattle Public Safety Survey is accepting responses through November 30. Weigh in on the DNR Outdoor Access and Responsible Recreation Strategic Plan through November 22. I’m a recent transplant, and this podcast has been a huge help for me in learning the area and the stories surrounding it. They give helpful context in both the headlines and the longer-form pieces, and I always enjoy the Friday hangout episodes!

While I do generally enjoy this podcast, they tend to invite the same guest to discuss local topics with one-sided ideological perspectives. A hyper left platform that supports tolerance of crime, homelessness, mental illness, blight, and rampant drug use, and graffiti And disparages efforts to reduce the impact of set issues gets tiresome. This is public radio. It wouldn’t hurt to have a more robust perspective of ideas. Please do better.
