From The 2022 US Open - USTA President Mike McNulty

From The 2022 US Open - USTA President Mike McNulty

Have you ever been to the US Open? We went for the very first time and it was incredible!

We were freaking out a little bit speaking to the President of USTA Michael McNulty in the President's office before watching Serena Williams play her last match.  He discusses his background, volunteering, and his most memorable moment as a player and as the President of USTA. We tried to get him to give us the algorithm for NTRP ratings too!

A few things

I enjoy your show

Rec tennis time between points is shorter than the Pros. 20 seconds for USTA rec players and 25 for Pros.

Qualifying matches at the US Open traditionally, save for a year or two prior to a Covid, has always been free of charge.

And ladies, these are professional players ranked between 90 and 200 in the world. They play like it. A main draw birth in the US Open is a payday that will make or break their year financially. Although they do now earn pay for qualifying rounds, but I’m not sure of the structure or if it includes all rounds.

I laughed at the crowd calling the ball portion. I can’t tell you the number of times I’d been in the chair or on a line (at the US Open, Indian Well, Miami, or another ATP event) and the crowd was wildly incorrect on the call. Linespeople are trained on how to see and call the ball as well as the chair umpire. They are not always correct, but their accuracy is astounding, even in the age of Hawkeye live.

Say hello to Rebel Goode, who I used to call Rebel Bad.

Take care and keep hitting
