Nest of Fearties #29: The End of The Starmer Project?

Keir Starmer announced his resignation as British Prime Minister on the 22nd of June 2026. Less than two years after securing a historic majority in the House of Commons, Starmer stood down to make way for Britian’s 7th PM in 10 years. He will be the shortest-serving PM in Labour history. At home, Keir Starmer promised national renewal but only managed decline – welfare was cut, pensioners left cold and our hard-won right to protest curtailed.  Welcome legislation – the Employment Rights Act, extended rights for renters and the partial nationalisation of the rail network – was lost amidst the Government’s apparent contempt for society's most vulnerable.  Abroad, Keir Starmer aided and abetted Israel’s genocide in Palestine, accelerating the flow of military equipment from London to Tel Aviv. He bowed to Donald Trump and built the foundations of the now ascendent war economy – a new force, as John Healey’s resignation indicated, he ultimately could not control.  This was the essence of the Starmer project. To talk about it, Coll McCail is joined on Nest of Fearties by  Matt Kerr and Jonathon Shafi.  Matt is the Morning Star’s Scotland reporter and a Glasgow Labour Councillor. Jonathan is the editor of Conter and a regular columnist with the National. He also writes the Independence Captured newsletter, where he has written about the implications of Starmer’s resignation.
