Comedy Vault: John Fox's 1983 New Year's Set- Show #287

Send us a text Step into a time machine with this gem pulled straight from the comedy vault! We're bringing you road comic legend John Fox's electric performance from a 1983 New Year's Eve show at Laughs Unlimited in Sacramento, when comedy had no filters and stand-up was truly unrestrained. Long before social media and cancel culture, comics like John Fox commanded stages across America with raw, boundary-pushing material that today's audiences might find shocking. Fox, who sadly passed away from cancer several years ago, represents the golden age of road comics - performers who built their reputations club by club, night after night. What makes this recording particularly special is that Fox was actually headlining above Yakov Smirnoff (who later became a household name) and Lois Bromfield, showing just how respected he was in comedy circles. The episode also features delightful historical artifacts - original radio promotions for Laughs Unlimited and the Magic Hat Bar by Sacramento radio personalities Paul and Phil from Y92, later known as "The Answer Guys" on the Discovery Channel. These vintage spots transport listeners to an era when local radio DJs were cultural influencers and comedy clubs were becoming fixtures across America. Fox's rapid-fire delivery and fearless approach to taboo subjects showcases why he was considered one of the best road comics of his generation. While his edgier material limited his mainstream television appearances, this recording preserves the magic that made him a favorite among comedy club audiences and fellow comedians alike. Whether you're a comedy history buff or simply curious about how stand-up has evolved over the decades, this episode offers both entertainment and education. Take a trip back to a wilder time in comedy - you might be surprised by how much has changed, and perhaps by how much remains the same at its core. Kevin Pollack, The Comic Impressionist Who Conquered Hollywood- Bonus Show #142

Send us a text Discover a rare comedic gem from the vault! Before Kevin Pollak became the acclaimed actor we know from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and countless Hollywood films, he was honing his craft as a brilliant stand-up comedian and impressionist at Laughs Unlimited comedy club. This nostalgic episode features Pollak at the height of his stand-up powers, showcasing the incredible impression skills that would later help launch his acting career. His routine begins with sharp observations about Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie success, questioning why the Academy consistently overlooks him with the hilarious punchline, "Do these people need a verb?" But the true highlight comes when Kevin launches into an elaborate Star Trek parody that demonstrates his remarkable versatility as a performer. Pollak's impression of William Shatner as Captain Kirk is nothing short of masterful, perfectly capturing the actor's distinctive dramatic pauses and theatrical delivery. The routine evolves into a tour de force as Kevin portrays multiple celebrity personalities aboard the Enterprise, each with their own distinct voice and mannerisms. His ability to seamlessly transition between these characters reveals the impressive range that would eventually make him such a sought-after character actor in film and television. For fans of comedy history, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse at the early career of an artist who would go on to achieve tremendous success in Hollywood. "Best Of" Series- A Stand-Up Christmas: Tales from the Comedy Circuit- Show #285

Send us a text Unwrap a present filled with laughter as our special holiday podcast brings together some of comedy's most brilliant minds sharing their hilarious, heartwarming, and occasionally cringe-worthy Christmas experiences. Greg Schwem kicks things off with the evolution of his family's improvised Christmas carol tradition, where party guests receive personalized verses set to "Up on the Housetop" – a tradition born from alcohol and creativity that became an eagerly anticipated annual event. Meanwhile, Kermit Apio transports us to Hawaii, where Santa mysteriously arrives via yellow cab with a garbage bag full of presents in broad daylight, challenging everything we thought we knew about Christmas logistics while demonstrating children's remarkable ability to overlook inconsistencies when gifts are involved. The emotional highlight comes from Yakov Smirnoff, who recounts his family's first Christmas in America after escaping the Soviet Union. Having grown up with "New Year's trees" and "Father Frost" in a country where religious holidays were banned, Yakov was overwhelmed when neighbors in his Bronx apartment building showed up at his door with furniture, food, clothing, and appliances he didn't even recognize. "In this most wonderful nation on earth, there's a little bit of real Santa Claus in every American," he reflects. Gift-giving disasters abound as Tim Bedore shares his catastrophic decision to give his girlfriend an urn (which he didn't recognize as such) in front of her entire family, while Steve Bruner warns against giving appliances as Christmas presents. Larry Brown offers a different perspective on holiday disappointment, recounting how bombing his Tonight Show audition just before Christmas 1984 led to "probably the worst Christmas of my life." Whether you're celebrating with family, working through the holidays, or just needing a laugh to counter seasonal stress, these comedians' perspectives remind us that behind perfect holiday imagery, real celebrations are often messy, unexpected, and make the best stories for years to come. Pour some eggnog, find a comfortable spot, and let these comedy professionals unwrap the holiday season in ways that will have you laughing into the new year. Vehicular Manslaughter: Bob Worley's Hilarious Animal Encounters

Send us a text Death has never been funnier as legendary road comic Bob Worley transforms roadkill encounters into comedy gold in this special Audience of One bonus show.  Bob kicks things off with a perfectly executed misdirection, asking host Scott Edwards about those heart-stopping moments when animals dart in front of your car – only to reveal he's never experienced this himself and is shocked that Scott apparently has a history of vehicular animal slaughter. The comedy builds as Bob shares increasingly absurd scenarios, including a friend who hit a deer and proudly displayed its duct-taped antlers as a trophy. The hilarity reaches new heights when Bob contemplates the physics of hitting a cow – "How does a cow dart out in front of your car? Don't they just mosey along?" His vivid descriptions of udder-hindered bovine movement will have you laughing despite yourself. The comedic climax arrives with Bob's confession about hitting a pigeon named "Billy" who tragically miscalculated his escape timing, followed by the other pigeons' pragmatic response to their friend's demise – "Oh, Billy didn't make it" – before proceeding to eat him in what Bob philosophically calls "the circle of life." This episode showcases exactly why Bob Worley has been a comedy staple for over four decades. His ability to find humor in life's uncomfortable moments and deliver it with impeccable timing reminds us why dark comedy, when done right, creates some of the most memorable laughs. Laugh Track: Headliner Ron Kenny Takes on Exercise, Drinking, and Cops

Send us a text Ready for some weekend laughs? Scott Edwards delivers comedy gold with headliner Ronnie Kenny, a comedian whose impressive resume includes serving as house emcee at major clubs nationwide and numerous television appearances. Kenny wastes no time connecting with audiences through his hilarious take on exercise avoidance. "Today I did a sit-up. Have you tried one of those lately? I got real lightheaded. I stopped that immediately, boy. I got up, grabbed a beer and a cigarette and laid back down again." His self-deprecating humor strikes a chord with anyone who's ever made half-hearted attempts at fitness. The comedian then launches into a brilliant comparison of whiskey drinkers versus beer drinkers when confronted by police, showcasing whiskey drinkers' quick-witted excuses ("This is a stealth car. I bought it from the Air Force") against beer drinkers' hilariously incriminating honesty ("Of course I was speeding. I'm out of beer"). Kenny's observational skills shine brightest when tackling laws against drunk bicycle riding, where he imagines ridiculous PSA campaigns: "Friends don't let friends pedal drunk." His expert timing and delivery transform everyday absurdities into comedy gold. Scott Edwards wraps up this bite-sized comedy treat by praising Kenny as "always great with audiences, always very funny."
