Babies, Bosses, and Balance: Mastering the Return to Work

According to Lori Mihalich-Levin, there are not enough resources out there about how to return to work after parental leave. Managers often have great intentions to support new parents but they don’t know where to start and most of the new parents are just as clueless.  That’s why Lori has developed the exact resources she wanted when she returned to work after welcoming her kids. In this episode she walks us through what managers need to be thinking about, what colleagues can do to support each other and how new parents can plan their own re-entry.  Everyone’s journey back to work is going to be different, but the more support we have, the better it’s going to go! Question: What resources or support are offered to parents returning from leave? This population is often most at risk for dramatic impacts on their career upon having children. How [should a business] prepare managers, the [company], and the employee taking leave to be away from the workplace for an extended period of time and subsequently reintegrate? Vibe Check: Are Your Presentations Energized?

Presentations HAVE to be inclusive. That’s how you keep the attention of your audience.   Over 200,000 students have taken Ivan Wanis Ruiz’s Coursera course, Communication Strategies for a Virtual Age. In this episode, we have the opportunity to join them for just a taste of what Professor Ivan has to offer. He’ll take us through how to present and promote ourselves no matter the situation. We talk about presenting to a group of three or a group of thousands. We talk about engaging virtually and in person and across generations. And finally, we talk about how to communicate better and really find out more about our peers and ourselves no matter how introverted you are! We threw a few questions at Ivan today: Question 1: “I am the only remote employee and my bosses are always worried I'm not working despite me logging all my hours with details of exactly what I'm working on. What can I do to better communicate with them?” Question 2: “I KNOW I do fantastic work but I’m not so great at presenting it (and myself) to higher ups and clients. Do I have to get better at this to advance in my career and what skills would I need to improve?” Produced by Coursera and Hueman Group Media. Talk About Mental Health Right Now

What brings you joy? That’s where we start today’s conversation about mental health. Tramaine El-Amin is joining us from the National Council for Mental Well-Being. She's vice president for a program called Mental Health First Aid. The course teaches you where to start with conversations about mental health as well as where to go and where not to go. This conversation includes a mnemonic for how to be there for our co-workers, discussion of how gen z is getting mental health attitudes right, and a call to be more transparent about what you’re doing to take care of yourself.  It’s not always easy to bring up this topic at work so today's question comes from me: “How should we be talking about mental health? From entry level employee to executive, what training do we need and what conversations should we be having?” Produced by Coursera and Hueman Group Media.
