Styx and Bones

I like the hosts and information they share, but it’s a hard listen at first. The first 20 minutes is filled with banter and product plugging. Past the filler, I enjoy it and will likely continue to listen.

A perfect example of how knowledge does not equate wisdom. You’d think these academics would know that hubris was one of the most egregious offenses to the gods.

I tried to stick around for several episodes but just left feeling stressed and overwhelmed. There are brief pockets of information often sourced from archeological record that I found fascinating, but these short interludes are often overshadowed with personal grievances and hot takes that end up consuming a large portion of the episodes. It feels as though the hosts are anticipating an argument from the other side that gets in the way of them sharing what they know with a willing audience, and instead focuses too much on speaking to detractors or the people “getting it wrong”.

Like other reviewers, I wanted to like this podcast. However, 99% of their content exists to offer “hot takes” with little to no actual information. They also throw a lot of shade at other creators, claiming that pagan and Hellenic polytheist authors must be “peer-reviewed” in order to meet their rigorous standards. In no reality will a pagan/polytheist author ever receive “peer reviews”—reviews from who, exactly? Academia is not friendly to the occult. Most academics will never admit to being spiritual practitioners, out of fear of being labeled unscientific and/or mentally ill by their colleagues. Furthermore, this podcast’s perspective about magic and witchcraft is extremely limited. I would not trust them with any actual magical work. “Don’t meditate, because the ancients didn’t do it.” “You can’t have personal relationships with the gods, because the ancients didn’t do it.” In what universe is that sound advice, or true? I doubt either of these individuals have any kind of spiritual or devotional practice whatsoever. The fact that they claim to call out grifters while charging $200 for a pre-recorded “goddess archetype tarot reading” is downright insulting.
