    141: 1 Reason Self-Care Doesn’t Work For High Achievers

    141: 1 Reason Self-Care Doesn’t Work For High Achievers

We all know self-care is important, but it’s usually the last thing on the to-do list for high achievers. It’s hard for us to set our big goals and responsibilities aside and put ourselves first every once in a while.
In this episode, you’ll learn why our brains approach self-care as a task or something to check off the to-do list. When that happens, self-care feels like more work!
You will also learn a simple strategy to rewire your brain into thinking about self-care differently so you can have the mental resources you need to stay focused on your big goals.

    Show Highlights
[02:15] - My bucket list goal of reading 50 books in a year was achieved in 2022.
[03:09] - After a while, reading stopped recharging me and felt like more work.
[04:51] - Our brains turn our self-care activity into something on our to-do list.
[06:14] - When we check something off the to-do list, we move on to the next thing.
[07:22] - Self-care becomes a burden and the joy gets lost.
[08:34] - Take a break to remove the internal pressure.
[09:41] - Self-care looks different day to day or week to week.
[10:25] - Ask yourself how you feel right now when you do your self-care activities.

BONUS - Replay Episode #92: Get Your Resolutions Back On Track

Most people make new year's resolutions or at least goals for 2022. We start the year motivated and committed, ready to make massive changes in our lives. Then by February it all goes down the drain and we’re back to the status quo.
    Why?
Because our brains are designed to keep us safe. Safe for your brain means staying in your comfort zone. Change takes energy and our brains are designed to conserve energy where possible.
Instead of creating massive goals that are vague and without a timeframe, set S.M.A.R.T. goals instead and see how much better you fare with your resolutions.
Listen in to hear all of my tips and advice for sticking to your resolutions this year!

    Show Highlights
[01:29] Whether you love them or hate them, most of us set goals for the year.
[02:41] Remember, your brain is designed to keep you safe and in your comfort zone.
[04:54] Goals and resolutions are so hard to stick with because of how we write them.
[06:06] Have you heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals?
[06:27] The “S” stands for specific.
    [07:04] “M” stands for measurable.
[07:40] The “A” stands for achievable or attainable.
    [08:44] “R” stands for relevant.
[09:40] The “T” stands for timely, so set a time limit.
[10:17] Take the resolution you set and break it down into super small steps.
[12:10] A quick review of all the information and tips in this episode.

BONUS - Replay Episode #79: 10 Strategies to Boost Motivation and STOP Procrastinating

Sometimes we would do almost anything else to avoid starting our next project at work! In our distraction-filled world it’s hard to stay motivated, especially if you’re a busy professional or entrepreneur. Find out how to boost your motivation on those days when you didn’t get out of bed ready to go!
When I set my own deadlines it can be easy to procrastinate, and that’s because our brain isn’t set to focus on the long game - it wants rewards, and our brain wants them now! With no stress and pressure, your brain isn’t motivated to work. With too much, it’s overwhelming, and your brain doesn’t want to work. You need the right amount of stress and pressure to keep your motivation and your work going at a steady pace to finish on your deadline.
Listen in to discover how you can break down your big goal into smaller tasks, how to take small steps to boost your motivation over time, and why getting outside for fresh air with physical activity can give your motivation a big boost.
