I generally like and enjoy this podcast. The hosts are engaging and interesting to listen to, and when they like a movie, the dissection of its themes is usually excellent.
…That being said, it’s a completely different show when they don’t like a movie. Despite obviously knowing that art is subjective, and even often clearly expressing that something just wasn’t “for them” they can become relentless and even mean if they personally didn’t like a movie. Woe betide the film that neither of them liked; the sneering becomes exponential.
For someone who likes listening to the hosts, it just becomes an off-putting minefield when you stumble on an episode where they’re covering something you loved and they didn’t. Upsetting, even. I wish they would keep in mind that when a movie makes hundreds of millions of dollars and millions of people love it, that their personal opinions that it’s objectively bad might be off-base. Maybe tone down the incredulity that anyone could possibly like such a movie, and just discuss it - be clear you didn’t care for it, but no need to rain down the napalm.
