Adolescent Brains and Social Media: What Every Parent Should Know with Professor Eva Telzer

In this insightful episode of The Hamilton Review Podcast, Dr. Bob Hamilton welcomes Professor Eva Telzer, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for an important conversation about adolescent brain development and the impact of social media on today's youth. Drawing from her article for the American Psychological Association, Professor Telzer explains how the teenage brain is uniquely shaped by social experiences, why social media can be both beneficial and harmful, and what current neuroscience reveals about the ways digital platforms influence behavior, emotions, and decision-making during adolescence. Parents, educators, and caregivers will gain valuable insights into how social media interacts with the developing brain, the role of peer relationships in teen development, and practical considerations for helping young people navigate an increasingly connected world. This thoughtful discussion offers evidence-based guidance for understanding the challenges and opportunities facing adolescents in the digital age. Eva Telzer is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill. She is an Associate Editor for the leading journals of the field, including Child Development, Social Cognitive Affective Neuroscience, and Brain and Environment. Her research examines how social and cultural processes shape adolescent brain development, with a focus on both prosocial and risk-taking behaviors, family and peer relationships, and the role of the digital environment in youth's lives. Her research has been continuously funded for over two decades by numerous agencies and foundations including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, and the Jacobs Foundation. She has authored more than 200 scientific manuscripts and book chapters and has received numerous awards for her work including an Association for Psychological Science Rising Star Award, an early career award from the Society of Research on Adolescence, a Young Investigator Award from the Flux Congress Society for Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, and the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology. Raising Giants with Lee Schwartz and Geoffrey Schwartz

This week on The Hamilton Review Podcast, we are pleased to welcome Lee Schwartz and Geoffrey Schwartz for a compelling conversation about family, football, and the realities of brain health in sports. Lee shares the extraordinary journey of raising two sons who went on to play professional football in the NFL, while Geoffrey offers his perspective as a former NFL player. Together, they provide a candid and insightful look at their experiences, exploring both the rewards and challenges of life in the sport. The discussion also examines CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a progressive brain disease that has become a significant concern in contact sports. Lee and Geoffrey share valuable insights and practical advice for parents seeking to better protect their children from brain injuries while participating in athletics. In addition, Lee discusses his book, Raising Giants: My Extraordinary Journey with Two NFL Sons, and the lessons he learned along the way. This is a powerful and informative episode of The Hamilton Review Podcast - one that every parent, coach, and sports enthusiast should hear and share. Lee spent his 40+ year professional career as an executive and consultant in manufacturing and distribution.  But what he's most proud of is being the father of two outstanding sons, Geoffrey and Mitchell, both of whom played 8+ years in the NFL. Lee's amazing two-decade experience with Geoffrey and Mitchell inspired him to write Raising Giants – My Extraordinary Journey with TWO NFL Sons, a memoir sharing his real-life stories of how love, discipline and vision helped shape his sons into elite athletes—and grounded men. Carrying his passion for football and the lives of his sons forward, Lee has now assumed a role on the West Coast Advisory Board of the Concussion & CTE Foundation (www.concussionandcte.org).   CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) is a progressive brain disease, a real-world issue.  Thank goodness, Geoffrey and Mitchell show no signs of struggle with mental decline but Lee's been touched by those who have/are struggling and by the impact it has on the sufferers and their families.  Lee is proud to raise awareness of CTE, particularly to parents of our youth who wish to participate in youth contact sports, and the work being done by the Concussion & CTE Foundation to find causes, treatments and cures for this horrible disease. Taking Religion Seriously with Charles Murray

This week on The Hamilton Review Podcast, we're pleased to welcome American Political Scientist, Charles Murray. In this episode, Charles discusses his book, Taking Religion Seriously. Taking Religion Seriously is Charles Murray's autobiographical account of the decades-long evolution in his stance toward the idea of God in general and Christianity in particular. The book traces Murray's journey from agnosticism to a tentative yet public Christian commitment. It is his first extended reflection on religion after four decades of writing on social policy and human diversity. Enjoy this engaging and thought provoking conversation. Charles Murray holds the F. A. Hayek Chair Emeritus in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. Murray first came to national attention with the publication of "Losing Ground: American Social Policy, 1950–1980" (Basic Books, 1984), which has been credited as the intellectual foundation for the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. In 1994, "The Bell Curve" (Free Press), a New York Times bestseller he coauthored with the late Richard J. Herrnstein, sparked heated controversy for its analysis of the role of IQ in shaping America's class structure. In 2012, in another the New York Times bestseller, "Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960–2010" (Crown Forum), Dr. Murray described the nature and causes of the cultural polarization that, by 2016, would shape national politics. In his latest book, "Human Diversity: The Biology of Gender, Race, and Class" (Twelve Books, January 2020), he describes recent developments in genetics and neuroscience that are transforming the social sciences.   How to contact Charles Murray: Charles Murray at American Enterprise Institute     How to contact Dr. Bob: Dr. Bob on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChztMVtPCLJkiXvv7H5tpDQ Dr. Bob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drroberthamilton/ Dr. Bob on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bob.hamilton.1656 Dr. Bob's Seven Secrets Of The Newborn website: https://7secretsofthenewborn.com/ Dr. Bob's website: https://roberthamiltonmd.com/ Pacific Ocean Pediatrics: http://www.pacificoceanpediatrics.com/

You won't want to miss a very special episode of The Hamilton Review. Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies, began teaching at Harvard in 1988, having previously taught at the University of Chicago and at Wellesley College. His work concentrates on the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, including its reinterpretations in the "rewritten Bible" of Second Temple Judaism and rabbinic midrash. In addition, one of his courses deals with the use of medieval Jewish commentaries for purposes of modern biblical exegesis, and another focuses on central works of Jewish theology in the twentieth century. Levenson has a strong interest in the philosophical and theological issues involved in biblical studies, especially the relationship of premodern modes of interpretation to modern historical criticism. Much of his work centers on the relationship of Judaism and Christianity, both in antiquity and in modernity, and he has long been active in Jewish-Christian dialogue. His book Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel: The Ultimate Victory of the God of Life (Yale University Press, 2006) won a National Jewish Book Award and the Biblical Archaeology Society Publication Award in the category of Best Book Relating to the Hebrew Bible published in 2005 or 2006. His book, The Love of God: Divine Gift, Human Gratitude, and Mutual Faithfulness in Judaism, was published in 2016 by Princeton University Press. His latest book is Israel's Day of Light and Joy: The Origin, Development, and Enduring Meaning of the Jewish Sabbath (Eisenbrauns, 2024).
