She Fled Guatemala to Save Her Children

Veteran journalist Charles Fleming returns to The Raid to tell the story of Maritza, an asylum seeker from Guatemala who survived decades of abuse before finding refuge in the United States. Host John Carlos Frey and Fleming trace Maritza's six-year journey through the U.S. asylum system: her legal border crossing to request protection, the landmark policy that first recognized domestic-violence survivors from Central America as a protected class, and the grueling process of proving her trauma to skeptical judges. Along the way, they confront the myths surrounding asylum seekers — that they're "freeloaders" gaming the system — and lay out what's actually true. The conversation closes with a sobering update: under the current administration, officials have stated the asylum system is effectively closed, and asylum seekers today are being redirected to third countries rather than allowed to stay in the U.S. Frey and Fleming ask what a nation loses — economically and spiritually — when it turns away people like Maritza. https://substack.com/@charlesuncounted https://theraidpodcast.org/ Disclaimer: The statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants on this program are solely their own and do not necessarily represent those of the distributor of the program and any person or entity affiliated with said distributor ("distributor's affiliates").  The distributor and distributor's affiliates are not responsible for, and shall not be liable for, the statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants, or for any content that appears on the program.    Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Married to a U.S. Citizen - Detained by ICE Anyway

Tatiana came to the United States from Russia on a legal visa and is married to a U.S. citizen. Five and a half months ago, she was arrested by ICE outside the Santa Monica studio where she worked as a tattoo artist — no warrant, no charges, no explanation. Her husband, Amir Modaraei, joins The Raid to tell the full story: how a 911 call during a rough patch in their relationship put Tatiana on ICE's radar, how an agent allegedly surveilled and harassed the couple for nine months before her arrest, and the habeas corpus fight Amir has waged ever since to bring her home. In this raw, emotional conversation, Amir describes Tatiana's ongoing detention at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center — the undrinkable water, inedible food, and pay-to-eat commissary system — along with the bond hearings, a judge reassignment, and the pending green card process that, according to Amir, should have kept her out of custody entirely. He also opens up about the guilt he carries, why he's chosen to speak publicly despite the backlash, and what he believes really drives the U.S. immigration detention system. This is the story of one family caught inside America's deportation machine — and a husband who refuses to stay quiet. https://theraidpodcast.org/ Disclaimer: The statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants on this program are solely their own and do not necessarily represent those of the distributor of the program and any person or entity affiliated with said distributor ("distributor's affiliates").  The distributor and distributor's affiliates are not responsible for, and shall not be liable for, the statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants, or for any content that appears on the program.    Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Six Months Later: Facts Behind Renee Goode's Death

On January 7th, a 37-year-old mother of three named Renee Goode was shot and killed by an ICE agent on a residential street in south Minneapolis — two blocks from an elementary school. The federal government says she tried to run the agent over with her car and called it an act of domestic terrorism. Her family, eyewitnesses, and an independent autopsy tell a very different story. Six to seven months later, the state of Minnesota still hasn't been given full access to the evidence that could settle which version is true. In this episode, host John Carlos Frey walks through the timeline: Operation Metro Surge, the 399-millisecond gap between the first two shots, the independent autopsy results, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension's stalled investigation, the Department of Justice's decision to close its review of the agent involved, and the federal subpoenas now targeting Minnesota's own elected officials. This is an accountability story about who controls the evidence — and what happens when the government that pulled the trigger is also the government deciding how much of the truth anyone else gets to see. https://theraidpodcast.org/ Disclaimer:  The statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants on this program are solely their own and do not necessarily represent those of the distributor of the program and any person or entity affiliated with said distributor ("distributor's affiliates").  The distributor and distributor's affiliates are not responsible for, and shall not be liable for, the statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants, or for any content that appears on the program.    Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sovereignty Ignored: A Federal Raid on Tribal Land

Armed CBP agents and contractors entered Tohono O'odham land before dawn, blocked tribal police from enforcing their own law, and brought in a SWAT team to protect the work. Before sunrise on August 25, roughly twenty masked, armed CBP agents crossed onto the Tohono O'odham Nation alongside border wall contractors — Tribal police were blocked from making arrests. A CBP tactical unit, a surveillance balloon, and coordination with Mexican police followed.  John Carlos Frey breaks down what the Tohono O'odham Nation's own statement documents, what the evidence actually shows about whether a wall is real border security.  Tohono O'odham Nation — "No Wall" campaign / latest news: https://www.tonation-nsn.gov/nowall/latest-news/ —  https://www.tonation-nsn.gov/border-wall-contractors-warned-not-to-trespass-on-the-nation/  Drone footage: https://www.tonation-nsn.gov  https://theraidpodcast.org/ Disclaimer: The statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants on this program are solely their own and do not necessarily represent those of the distributor of the program and any person or entity affiliated with said distributor ("distributor's affiliates").  The distributor and distributor's affiliates are not responsible for, and shall not be liable for, the statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants, or for any content that appears on the program.    Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. ICE Was Outside Her Town Hall

A local officer runs the plates on a Ford Explorer parked outside a town hall — and the story the driver gives him falls apart within minutes. In this episode of The Raid, host John Carlos Frey breaks down what happened outside Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's August 6th town hall in Richfield, Minnesota, when a woman claiming to be private security turned out to be a federal Homeland Security Investigations agent.  This episode looks past the single parking-lot encounter to ask a bigger question: what does it mean for a community that already believes it is being watched? Is this a story about voter suppression, or something more corrosive — the chilling effect of surveillance that never needs to be proven to change how people show up to political life.  https://minnesotareformer.com/2026/08/10/rep-ilhan-omar-raises-questions-about-undercover-ice-agent-at-town-hall/  https://omar.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/omar-evo.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/2026.08.07-rep-omar-letter-to-hsi.pdf  https://theraidpodcast.org/ Disclaimer: The statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants on this program are solely their own and do not necessarily represent those of the distributor of the program and any person or entity affiliated with said distributor ("distributor's affiliates").  The distributor and distributor's affiliates are not responsible for, and shall not be liable for, the statements and opinions expressed by the host or participants, or for any content that appears on the program.      Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How Migrant Children Became Bait

A father in New Mexico thought he was going to an interview to reunite with his kids. Instead, ICE put him in chains. On this episode of The Raid,  John Carlos Frey traces how the Trump administration is using migrant children in federal custody as leverage to locate and detain their parents and relatives — and how that's just one piece of a much bigger strategy to dismantle long standing protections for migrant children and to fast track their deportation. This is a story assembled from public reporting, court filings, and a sitting U.S. senator's letter to HHS — not hidden, just scattered. A Border Patrol Killing They Tried to Bury

Host John Carlos Frey investigates the killing of Isaias Sanchez Barbosa, a 31-year-old man shot three times by a Border Patrol agent on a private ranch in Starr County, Texas, on December 11th.  Frey lays out how this case fits a long-running pattern: agency self-investigation, a fast public statement built on the same handful of justifying phrases, records that surface only when a reporter or a lawsuit forces them out, and grand juries that almost never indict. He also makes the case for why a border shooting like this one belongs on the same list as the interior immigration-enforcement killings that have made national headlines this year, since Border Patrol and ICE operate under the same department, the same use-of-force policy, and the same chain of command.  Border Report - Syndicated Texas Tribune coverage: https://www.borderreport.com/hot-topics/texas-tribune/a-border-agent-killed-a-migrant-who-crossed-into-starr-county-eight-months-later-its-still-under-investigation/  San Antonio Current - "A Border Patrol agent killed a migrant in Texas last December.
