“I don’t trust myself to think that I can’t.” In this episode of The Unknown Path we have the incredible Jonathon Barbato, TV executive, co-founder and co-CEO of Best Ever Channels, transformational leader, and author of Hacking Heaven, his debut novel, out 7 November. In this episode of The Unknown Path, Jem Fuller sits down with his dear friend Jonathon Barbato — TV executive, transformational leader and debut author. With more than 25 years in broadcast, cable and digital media, Jonathon is co-CEO of Best Ever Channels, where he shares uplifting stories with a potential audience of more than 80 million viewers. This November he adds a new chapter to his journey with the release of his first novel, Hacking Heaven. Before the corporate career at Sony, Warner Bros., MGM and Starz, Jonathon was the smallest kid in the class, overlooked by others, and often felt like an outsider growing up. In that sense of invisibility, he found himself writing a story that could have gotten him expelled. Instead, his teacher encouraged his gift for storytelling, a gift that has now led to his debut novel. For Jonathon, the people who showed up for him in childhood were the reason he began to understand that being different didn’t make him worse. It is a beautiful reminder of how being fully seen by even one person can alter the course of your life. For most people, self-doubt is what holds them back. For Jonathon, it became the reason he kept saying yes. He learned to distrust the voice telling him he couldn’t do something, and his willingness to step into the unknown, even when it frightened him, opened doors he could never have planned for and led to the success he has today. Alongside that courage is the practice of letting go, and the way so much of what mattered most in his life arrived once he stopped trying to control how it would happen. This episode also explores the dreams we set aside and the moments that call us back to them. Jonathon always knew he was a writer, and for most of his life that part of him waited while his career moved in other directions. When he finally returned to it, the writing came with a sense of joy and discovery that he describes as falling in love with his own characters. Hacking Heaven is the result, a funny and heartfelt spiritual fable about love across lifetimes, which has received accolades from early readers and an incredible example of trusting your own gifts and backing yourself. This week’s conversation covers the power of being seen, the self-trust that can grow out of years of doubt, and Jonathon’s belief that life is happening for us, not to us, even in the midst of pain, grief and not being certain of who you are. In this conversation we go into: — Growing up the outcast and the mentors who saw something in him early — The seventh grade story that nearly got him expelled and set him on the path of a writer — Saying yes when it scares you, and how self-doubt can turn into courage — Reconnecting with his daughter after years of distance — How Best Ever Channels came together through a deal neither partner could afford alone — Conscious media and stories that let audiences decide for themselves — Writing Hacking Heaven after a vision quest in Death Valley — Making peace with rage, and what personal shadow work says about the collective About Jonathon: Jonathon Barbato is a TV executive, transformational leader, speaker, author and entrepreneur with more than 25 years in broadcast, cable and digital media.
