As an American it is good to listen to podcasts like these to see how US policy is perceived from Europe. I’m listening to the episode from Keir Giles and it is interesting to hear an analyst from an ally characterize the capture of Maduro as a kidnapping or the US policy in Ukraine as favoring Putin.
To be sure, the capture of Maduro is unusual, but one would think analysts in Europe could appreciate how destabilizing the Maduro regime is, having driven a quarter of the Venezuelan population to flee mostly to the US. Europe has experienced similar problems from the Middle East and Africa, and they are now benefiting from improvements in the ground in Syria. With luck we can expect similar stabilization of Venezuela.
Similarly, it’s amazing how deluded Western Europeans remain regarding Russia and Ukraine. They are unwilling to invest or enlist in their own militaries, but they still seem to think they can force Russia into concessions they have never accepted since this war began. Apparently, the US is supposed to provide the leverage to make this happen and it is a betrayal when American leaders assert Europe should bear the burden of securing their continent, especially when leaders like Macron in France says the US should not expect to drag Europe into any American conflict with China. Apparently, the NATO alliance only goes one way for Europeans. It is just an American commitment to spend blood and treasure to support Europeans. If America needs help with threats from China, we are on our own.
Ukraine is a thorny problem and the Ukrainians are of course welcome to keep fighting, but it is silly for Europeans to expect some improvement there without actually taking their security more seriously. If the US secures some agreement with Russia for Ukraine, the Ukrainians are free to reject it, but no one else seems to have an alternate strategy other than continuing to kill the Russians to the last Ukrainian defender. The US cannot infinitely underwrite the war, because we have to deal with the Pacific. If the Europeans were a serious ally they would at least take securing their own continent seriously.
Nonetheless, it is important for Americans to be aware of the European perspective, so I encourage them to listen.
