    Season 3 Episode 6 - Patrol Method: Conversation with Owen Mielke

    In this companion episode of Trail Talk – Leading the Scouting Adventure, Mr. Mielke sits down with Owen Mielke, the current Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 888, for a youth leader’s view of the Patrol Method. Owen was elected SPL during a season of major transition, as Troop 888 welcomed new Scouts, re-formed patrols, created new patrol names, and began building fresh patrol identities. From Spring Camporee to summer camp at Camp Geiger, Owen has had a front-row seat to what happens when the Patrol Method moves from theory into real troop life. Together, we talk about patrol flags, names, games, leadership roles, older Scouts learning to step back, Patrol Leaders stepping into responsibility, and why a little “trial by fire” can help patrols grow. Owen also shares advice for new Patrol Leaders, Scouts in patrols, and adults trying to support youth leadership without taking over. This conversation is honest, practical, and grounded in the real work of helping small teams become stronger on the trail.

    In this episode of Trail Talk – Leading the Scouting Adventure, Mr. Mielke explores one of the most classic—and sometimes misunderstood—Methods of Scouting: the Patrol Method. As Troop 888 grows and re-forms its patrols after a large group of new Scouts crosses over, this episode looks at what the Patrol Method is really meant to do. It is not just a seating chart or a roster exercise. It is where Scouts build identity, carry responsibility, learn leadership, and become part of a crew. Along the way, we hear real patrol-name stories from Scouts in other troops, including the Question Marks, Electric Eagles, and Fire Foxes, and reflect on what those names reveal about belonging, humor, shared memory, and patrol culture. The episode also opens the door to the companion conversation with Owen, Troop 888’s current Senior Patrol Leader, who will share what the Patrol Method looks like from the youth leadership side.

    Season 3 Episode 5 - Ideals: Conversation with Tony McGill

    In this companion episode to our conversation on the Scouting Method of Ideals, Mr. Mielke sits down with Tony McGill, a former Troop 888 Scout, Eagle Scout, Philmont crew member, and now college student at the University of Wisconsin. Tony shares his Scouting trail from Illinois to Belgium to Papillion, reflecting on how Scouting helped him find community, build discipline, and think more deeply about the kind of person he wants to become. Along the way, we revisit a few Troop 888 legends from Philmont 2021, including the branded bagel and the flying tent. But the heart of the conversation is bigger than the stories.     Season 3 Episode 5 - Ideals: The Brand of Scouting

    In this episode of Trail Talk, Mr. Mielke begins exploring the Methods of Scouting with the Method of Ideals — the Scout Oath, Scout Law, motto, slogan, and the values that help turn Scouting’s aims into lived experience. The trailhead for this conversation is a story from Philmont 2021, where a stop at Clark’s Fork led to one of Troop 888’s more unusual relics: a Philmont-branded bagel. It was funny, memorable, and very temporary. But it opens the door to a deeper question: Scouting can brand boots, hats, gloves, and even a bagel, but can it brand the person? Through stories, reflections, and practical examples, this episode looks at how the ideals of Scouting shape character, citizenship, fitness, and everyday leadership. From the “Scouting sunburn” that shows up on Monday morning to the small choices that reveal who we are becoming, this episode asks listeners to consider what marks Scouting has left on them — and which point of the Scout Law still needs a few more trail miles.

    Season 3 Episode 4 - Fitness: Conversation with Gavin Mielke

    In this companion episode of Trail Talk, Mr. Mielke sits down with his son Gavin to continue the conversation from Episode 4: Fitness as readiness. Gavin was there during the 2017 tornado cleanup in Papillion, but his first memory of that night was not hauling debris. He was down the street babysitting, trying to keep younger kids calm while the lights were out and no one fully knew yet what had happened outside. From that starting point, the conversation moves into Gavin’s own growth journey — from being active but “scraggly” in high school, to making a deliberate decision before college to start working on his physical fitness. What began as a trip to the gym with “a water bottle and a dream” became something deeper: discipline, confidence, mental steadiness, and a clearer sense of what it means to stay ready.     Fitness in Scouting is not about looking impressive. It is about being ready. In this episode of Trail Talk, Mr. Mielke reflects on the third Aim of Scouting through the story of a 2017 tornado that hit Papillion over Papillion Days weekend. That Saturday, the community spent the morning cleaning up storm debris, hauling limbs, checking on neighbors, and helping restore order. By afternoon, people gathered downtown for the parade anyway. That moment becomes the heart of this episode: fitness as capacity, readiness, and service. From neighborhood cleanup with Gavin to a later storm response with Owen and the troop, this episode explores why physical, mental, and social fitness matter—not for vanity, but for usefulness. Character gives us the heart to serve. Citizenship gives us the place to serve. Fitness gives us the ability to do the work when the need arrives. Fitness is readiness. And readiness is service.

    Season 3 Episode 3 - Citizenship - Conversation with Ray Keller

    In this companion episode of Trail Talk – Leading the Scouting Adventure, Mr. Mielke sits down with Ray Keller, a longtime Papillion La Vista South High School government teacher, department chair, and member of the Papillion Planning Commission. Together, they continue the conversation from “The Key to the City – Citizenship,” exploring what it means to belong responsibly to a community. Ray shares how he helps students move beyond textbook civics and begin to understand government as something local, practical, and connected to real people. From city ordinances and public hearings to Planning Commission meetings and Papillion Days, this conversation brings citizenship close to home. Ray and Mr. Mielke discuss teaching civic knowledge, serving locally, showing up when it is inconvenient, and helping young people understand that good citizenship requires both understanding and care. It is a conversation about belonging, responsibility, and what it means to help hold a community together. Citizenship in Scouting is not just a label or a requirement. It is something Scouts practice through patrol life, youth leadership, service, and learning how to live alongside others with respect and reliability. From the earliest idea of a citizen as someone who belongs to a community, to the modern Scout learning how to serve, listen, lead, and show up, citizenship becomes a lived habit. This episode also connects the aim of citizenship to local service, the Patrol Method, the three citizenship merit badges, and Mr. Mielke’s experience serving on the Papillion Planning Commission.
