    The Challenge of Rare Disease Diagnosis with Heather Gatcombe, MD

Her son experienced normal development until age eight, when he suffered a sudden stroke at school. After five years, he was diagnosed with a nuclear DNA mutation. Now 16, he has endured multiple strokes, hearing loss, and heart failure, but has successfully undergone a heart transplant and is currently preparing for college. In addition to her clinical work, Heather serves on the Board of Trustees and the Scientific Medical Advisory Board Clinical Training and Education Committee of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF). The UMDF is dedicated to raising awareness of mitochondrial disease, which can present in both children and adults—the average age of diagnosis is 30. During our interview, Dr. Gatcombe highlighted the challenges of obtaining an accurate diagnosis for mitochondrial disease, noting that precise identification is essential for effective treatment.     Healing Multiple Myeloma with Medicine, Music, and Mind

Many thanks to Ray Hartgen, a cancer survivor and author of several books, including "Me, Myself, and My Multiple Myeloma," for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." Ray shared his journey with multiple myeloma that included a stem cell transplant six years ago. He continues to receive regular treatments to keep the cancer at bay. His personal experience has led him to become an active cancer patient advocate. During our 30-minute discussion, Ray emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to health, engaging with the community, and the role of support groups and caregivers in cancer treatment. Ray also shared the excitement of writing his first novel, "Outflanked." Ray is a serious musician who uses music as a coping strategy and source of motivation. Ray's nonfiction books include "Indy 500" and "Immaculate: How the Steelers Saved Pittsburgh.  Ray encouraged everyone to check in with their doctors at least once a year for a physical examination. His cancer was discovered on a routine blood test and might have gone unnoticed had he not shown up for his annual physical exam!     "Fitness: 50, 60, 70 and Beyond" with author Michael Guadagnino, DC

Many thanks to Dr. Michael Guadagnino, author of the new book “Fitness: 50,60,70, and Beyond.” Dr. Guadagnino is a fitness enthusiast and chiropractic practitioner for more than 30 years.    During our 20-minute interview, Dr. Guadagnino shared his background in chiropractic medicine and fitness, emphasizing his extensive experience and focus on wellness for older adults. We discussed the challenges of exercising as one ages or in the presence of chronic illness, the importance of keeping a positive mindset, the advantage of writing down goals, and the value of exercise as an injury prevention strategy.    Dr. Guadagnino stressed the importance of staying active. He emphasized the importance of warming up before exercise and observed that even stretching counts as exercise. Balance exercises can help prevent falls and injuries and are especially important as people age.
