VC10X - 7 Meta Themes for Startup Investing by Martin Tobias, founder of Incisive Ventures

VC10X - 7 Meta Themes for Startup Investing by Martin Tobias, founder of Incisive Ventures

Martin Tobias, the founder of Incisive Ventures. With over 25 years of investing, he has identified seven meta themes and developed a screening process that has produced superior returns. This process has grown out of the analysis of hundreds of investments and what has been common among the winners in their characteristics and his decision process.

His direct investments have delivered 3x the returns versus his LP interests in other Venture funds, leading many to encourage him to start Incisive Ventures. Out of hundreds of deals across his desk, only a handful, the ones he is most confident of giving a > 10x return, make the cut as an investment.

He is a serial entrepreneur who has also invested in over 250 companies as an angel, half a dozen as a venture partner at a major VC firm, and he is a limited partner in over a dozen VC funds. He is also the Founder of a leading Angel network, Element8.

In this episode, we talk about:

    1. Martin's story & how he started investing
    2. 7 meta themes he uses to evaluate a potential investment
    3. Why laziness wins?
    4. His biggest learnings from 25 years of investing & much more.

VC10X - How to start an Angel Syndicate? w/ Jed Ng, Founder Angel School

VC10X - How to start an Angel Syndicate? w/ Jed Ng, Founder Angel School

Jed started Angel investing 5 years ago. He got his first exit in year 2, and his first unicorn 2 years after that.

He saw syndicates as a way to scale capital, diversify risk, and earn more upside through carried interest.

He learned that it's really HARD to build a syndicate from 0 for three reasons:

    01

No best practices: Building syndicates isn’t a structured discipline today. Google “how to start an angel syndicate” and you’ll get piecemeal answers about creating a syndicate on AngelList or how syndicates work. There’s simply no single end-to-end view of the process.

    02

Broad skillsets required: Building a successful syndicate is like running startup. You’ll be convincing LPs to look at your dealflow (BizDev), performing due diligence (Being a VC), sharing deals with your LPs (marketing) and closing capital (Sales). It takes all these skillsets at the right amounts at the right time.

    03

The chicken-and-egg problem: Functioning syndicates require both LPs and dealflow at the same time. There’s a ‘cold start’ problem in having to solve both sides of the equation at once.

Angel School helps you overcome all these obstacles to start your own Angel Syndicate.

In this episode, we talk about:

    1. What is an Angel Syndicate?

    2. How's it different from a Venture Fund?

    3. Why starting an Angel Syndicate is a good idea?

    4. How Angel School helps you overcome the obstacles?

    ..and more
