Interview with Crime Author Lynda Drews

Interview with Crime Author Lynda Drews

If you haven't listened to the previous episode 'A Fatal Love Triangle: The Case of Pamela Bulik', you may need to listen to that before this interview so you don't get any spoilers! Chelsea and Bailey interview Lynda Drews, author of Run at Destruction: A True Fatal Love Triangle about her book which centers around the suspicious death of her best friend Pamela Bulik. Tune in to listen to why Lynda decided to write the book, how writing this book helped her with the grief of losing her friend, her own personal theories on Pam's mysterious death and her favorite stories of Pam who was a wonderful teacher, mother and wife.
    About the Author:
Lynda Drews, a Wisconsin native, gave the commencement speech at her University of Wisconsin-La Crosse alma mater. She encouraged students to journal their lives as she had. In 2009, Run at Destruction: A True Fatal Love Triangle was the outcome. Publisher’s Weekly said: “the author and victim’s shared moments… are remarkable.” The Investigation Discovery Channel filmed a segment based on that book, and it was endorsed by Ann Rule, the best-selling true crime author. Lynda’s Door County, Wisconsin mystery novel, Circle of Innocence, was published in 2014. Midwest Book Review said it “excels in psychological depth,” and Brian Freeman, the best-selling author of The Bone House, endorsed it. Desperate Parallels was inspired by Lynda’s IBM global executive career. While working in America and Japan, she learned first-hand the issues women faced, and continue to face, in the corporate business world. The Maid and the Socialite: The Brave Women Behind Green Bay's Scandalous Minahan Trials (released in 2023) takes place in Lynda's hometown in an era where women were treated as less than equal to the city's powerful men. The Midwest Book Review states that this true story is told with "the drama of fiction and the compelling research of fact."  Click here for book trailer.
When Lynda’s not writing, she teaches classes for WRITE ON DOOR COUNTY, participates on the Brown County Historical Society Board, reads, runs, knits, plays bridge, and drinks coffee.  The latter is a necessity, even at bedtime.

A Fatal Love Triangle: The Case of Pamela Bulik

A Fatal Love Triangle: The Case of Pamela Bulik

In 1984, Pamela Bulik lived in Green Bay, WI with her husband Bob and their two children. Pam was an avid runner, a popular schoolteacher, and by April, Pam had been training months with her best friend Lynda Drews for the upcoming local marathon. Pam was excited for the race: she had lost weight, gained speed, and made new personal records on her times. Tragically, however, on the morning of April 7th, Pam had missed the marathon and is soon found dead in her home. Investigators were quick to the scene and identified that there were only three options for Pam’s death: accidental, suicide or murder. The details surrounding the crime scene were puzzling and there seemed to be more nefarious underpinnings to Pam's death than her husband's claims of an accidental death. The small community is quickly swept into a frenzy by Pam's death, suspicions of suicide that rang false, and Bob Bulik's alleged affair with a fellow educator. Hang out with us as we dig into this case (detailed in Lynda Drew’s book, Run at Destruction: A True Fatal Love Triangle) as we explore secret affairs, deception, and infidelity that took place in the most unexpected community.

Clergy Abuse: Interview with Survivor and Advocate Tim Lennon

Clergy Abuse: Interview with Survivor and Advocate Tim Lennon

GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: This interview contains discussions around child sexual abuse from a survivor. Listener discretion advised.
There are some things in this world that must be brought to light. Clergy abuse, specifically sexual clergy abuse, is one of these horrible ugly things that must be brought to light. Interestingly, clergy abuse, although typically seen within religious establishments, can be found in any setting where an authority figure abuses their power. Tim Lennon and the people involved in organizations like Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) and Stand Up Speak Up have dedicated much of their life advocating for survivors of sexual abuse within religious establishments. Tim is a survivor himself and he brings heartbreaking insight into his own abuse by the hands of the Priest of their parish. Tim will talk about the research and statistics around clergy abuse as well as provide numerous resources and organizations who are fighting to stop this abuse. Tim also commends many of the current members of different religious organizations, like priests, who are fighting alongside the survivors of clergy abuse to make a change for the better.  Tim focuses on healing and forward motion, and he will leave you with sobering facts as well as hope and inspiration for the future.

Black Collar: The Crimes of Reverend Ryan Erickson

Black Collar: The Crimes of Reverend Ryan Erickson

GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains graphic content around sexual abuse of minors, substance abuse, suicide and homicide. Listener discretion advised.
In June of 2000, Ryan Gene Erickson was ordained as a priest at St. Anne’s Church in Somerset, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, Father Ryan, a new priest with a long history of questionable behaviors to include cruelty to animals, alcoholism, and sexual abuse, was stationed at St. Patrick’s Church in Hudson, Wisconsin. Despite the fact that he had been under the seminary spotlight for eight years and having been psychologically evaluated no less than three separate times by three separate professionals. Father Ryan maintained rigid, traditional and conservative views often preaching on the sins of sex and sexuality. He wore a cassock with a 9mm under it, drank alcohol, smoked cigars and had an unhealthy interest in minor boys. By February of 2002, two members of the Hudson community were mercilessly executed in the O’Connell Funeral home: 39-year-old Dan O'Connell, a parishioner at St. Patrick's Church, and 22-year-old James Ellison. Though there were no substantial leads in the initial years following the murders, by 2004, there would be new evidence pointing to the most unlikely person as the perpetrator behind the double homicide. This episode is not for the faint of heart and it’ll have you questioning with whom and in what you place your faith.

The Hair Fetish Killer (Part 2)

The Hair Fetish Killer (Part 2)

In part 1, we covered the disappearance of Elisa Claps, the brutal murder of Heather Barnett and the cat-and-mouse chase of a weird dude named Danilo Restivo that had a gnarly hair fetish. In part 2, we finally get to put all the puzzle pieces together. Elisa Claps disappeared from The Most Holy Trinity church in the city center; she was seen going in but never coming out. After 17 long years, the Claps family and the entire community of Potenza, Italy would finally have some long-awaited answers. In March of 2010, Elisa Claps body was finally found and in the most unexpected, or expected, place (depending how skeptical you are of ‘systems’). On the other side of a shared coin, advancements in DNA would be key to solving this puzzle in Heather Barnett’s brutal murder from 2002. Two countries working together, testimonies from several women who had locks of their hair clandestinely cut, and forensic evidence would finally bring Heather Barnett and Elisa Claps killer to justice. Finish this journey with us as we try to put a ‘bow’ on this tragic, infuriating, wild and crazy case.
