We talked to Beth about Starstruck, the queer Cyrano de Bergerac inspired musical she co-wrote with music by the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers; portraying Dolly Parton's gay best friend (with a striking mullet) in the Dolly Parton musical; and originating the role of Sister Mary Robert in the Sister Act musical before it got to Broadway. We also talked about her iconic role as Alison Bechdel in Fun Home, how she recreated Adult Alison's look for tick, tick... BOOM!, and her deep love for Kristy McNichol. We love gay people. Marsha is a prolific stage and screen actor, a 4-time Oscar-nominee, an organic herb farmer, a race car driver, and a theatre director who gave us all the scoop on jumping in as a last-minute understudy for The Roommate starring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow on Broadway. We talk about her artistic (and personal) partnership with her ex-husband Neil Simon, the original Goodbye Girl directed by Mike Nichols and starring Robert Deniro that never was (Bogart Slept Here), and what it was like seeing Kathleen Turner "play her" in her stepdaughter, Ellen Simon's film Moonlight and Valentino.
