Jon Gray - “The Plate is a Passport”

ON THE COUCH's first-ever guest is Jon Gray — co-founder of Ghetto Gastro, the Bronx-born collective that uses food to spark conversations about culture, race, power, and belonging. Jon calls himself “the dishwasher,” but his work has moved from the block to the museum to the boardroom, merging food, art, fashion, design, and music into a cultural movement. What many people don’t realize is that Jon doesn’t think of food as his product — he sees it as his medium, using it to tell stories that will make you rethink every meal you've ever eaten. In this episode, he’s seated on a foam couch by John Chamberlain — the perfect setting for a conversation about making art from everyday materials. Remembering the Ones You've Lost

Hunter Prosper talks to three strangers who have experienced the death of someone they love to understand how loss reshaped their lives—and how they continue to honor those who are gone. Meet this episode's strangers: - Jen, whose younger sister Christie was murdered along with her dog Hunter, and how that single phone call split her life into “before” and “after.” She describes the shock of an unexpected, violent death, the feeling of becoming “untethered,” and the help she’s found through a sibling-loss support group. Jen now says her sister’s name every day to honor her memory. - Arielle reflects on losing both of her grandfathers, and how learning their stories after their deaths revealed the ways their paths mirror her own. She also explains why asking older adults about their lives is one of the most powerful ways to keep their legacies alive after they are gone. - Isabel opens up about the night a police officer rang the doorbell at 4 a.m. to tell her family her older brother Jack was in the hospital after a car accident. Jack did not make it. Years after his death, she still feels his presence, and reflects on how even though she is now older than he ever was, he still feels like her older brother.  Topics: - Sibling bonds and "first best friends" - Preserving intergenerational legacies through storytelling - Spiritual signs and synchronicity  - Grief support groups and community - Fostering dogs and giving back  - How grief transforms over time - Radical vulnerability as survival - Living in honor of loved ones - The power of narrative - Intuition vs. Anxiety  Chapters: 00:00:00 How memories live on after death 00:03:15 Jennifer’s Story: Coping with an unexpected sibling loss 00:07:39 Daily rituals: The importance of saying their name 00:11:35 Honoring a legacy through proactive acts of kindness 00:15:21 Reflections on the most beautiful things ever told 00:16:51 Ariel’s Story: The regret of unasked family questions 00:21:30 Preserving family history and carrying on a legacy 00:24:56 Isabel’s Story: Facing tragedy and growing up overnight 00:27:17 Seeing signs: Finding comfort in spiritual connections 00:34:20 Receiving the news: A family’s response to crisis 00:41:11 The evolution of grief and building self-awareness 00:47:34 Radical vulnerability and finding peace in the unknown FOLLOW THE SHOW ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/storiesfromastrangerpod ►Threads: https://www.threads.com/@storiesfromastrangerpod ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/storiesfromastrangerpodcast FOLLOW HUNTER PROSPER ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hunter_prosper/ ►TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hunterprosper LISTEN ►Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stories-from-a-stranger/id1895174119 ►Amazon: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/23b37bdf-ce71-4dad-9d25-9900b5d25d7c/stories-from-a-stranger ►Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2naQZkPOvSgMzUMh9Z5ivs #StoriesFromAStranger #LifeAfterLoss #ActsOfKindness #SiblingLoss #Healing See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This Loaf Changed American Bread, with Chad Robertson

Today, we’re dedicating a whole episode to a single loaf of bread. But not just any bread: the loaf from San Francisco’s Tartine bakery, which kicked off a sourdough revolution in the States.   David and Jessica start the show by unpacking just what made Tartine and its bread so influential; together, they dig into the ways this loaf's impact continues to resonate today, plus their own personal relationships to it. Then, Jessica is joined by Tartine’s Chad Roberston, who shares his baking journey, the myriad inspirations that shaped his bread baking, and his thoughts on sourdough today. Finally, they answer some of your biggest sourdough questions before closing the show with this week’s Jess-opinion and the recipes they’re baking.   Recipes and other links from this episode:  Pick up a copy of Tartine Bread and Tartine No. 3 (which Jessica cowrote!)   Follow Chad Robertson and his work on Instagram   Inspired to bake? 7. Why Is Pluto No Longer a Planet?

    HÁ 4 DIAS ·  VÍDEO

Why Is Pluto No Longer a Planet?

Pluto used to be the ninth planet in our Solar System. Then in 2006 everything changed. Dr Matt Agnew explains why... and it's a better story than you think. In this episode of Why Though?, we travel back to 1930 when astronomer Clyde Tombaugh spotted a tiny moving dot in the night sky and made one of the biggest discoveries in space history. We find out what happened when scientists discovered Eris... a Pluto-like world that was even heavier than Pluto. And we learn the three-rule checklist that decides what actually counts as a planet. Of course Matt's dog Pluto makes a cameo. What you'll learn: - Pluto was discovered in 1930 and taught as the ninth planet for over 70 years - Better telescopes revealed a whole region of icy worlds beyond Neptune called the Kuiper Belt - Scientists found Eris... similar to Pluto but even heavier, which forced a big question - To be a planet, a world must orbit the Sun, be round, and clear its neighbourhood - Pluto does two out of three... but it hasn't cleared its neighbourhood - Pluto became a dwarf planet in 2006... and it's still completely incredible Key Science Ideas: - Kuiper Belt: A region beyond Neptune full of icy objects - Planet definition: The three-rule checklist astronomers use to classify worlds - Clear its neighbourhood: Being the gravitational boss of your part of space - Dwarf planet: Orbits the Sun, is round, but hasn't cleared its neighbourhood - Scientific change: Science updates its ideas when new evidence appears Fun Experiment: The Planet Checklist Challenge Scientists use a three-rule checklist to decide what counts as a planet. Now it's your turn to be the astronomer. Grab five objects from around the house... a footy, a mandarin, a marble, a 50 cent coin, and a tin of baked beans. These are your space objects. For each one, ask the three planet questions: - Does it orbit a star? Walk it around a lamp - Is it round? Check its shape - Is it the boss of its space? Could it push everything else out of its way, or does it have to share? Only objects that pass all three rules get to be a planet. Then here's the twist... change one rule and see what happens. That's exactly what scientists did in 2006. They didn't move Pluto. They just got clearer about the rules. And Pluto couldn't pass the third test. Why Though? The 5 Types of Overthinking and How to Turn Each One Off | Emiliya Zhivotovskaya [Best of]

The voice telling you that you're not enough, that something is about to go wrong, that you should have done it differently, it sounds like you. That's exactly what makes it so hard to catch and so hard to stop. Emiliya Zhivotovskaya has spent decades inside the science and practice of mental wellbeing, training thousands of coaches worldwide through her Certification in Applied Positive Psychology program.  Her own path into this work began with a personal reckoning. An eating disorder that started in adolescence, years of thoughts she couldn't separate from herself, and the moment someone first told her she didn't have to be a passive recipient of what her mind was doing to her. In this conversation, we go deep into the phenomenon most of us call overthinking and find out it's not one thing. It's five distinct types of chatter, each with its own voice, its own purpose, and its own specific antidote. What you'll explore: The five types of mind chatter: worry, motivation, mindset, judgment, and regret. And how to tell which one is running you at any given momentWhy high-level worriers actually problem-solve less effectively, and what to do with anxiety that won't respond to "just let it go"The "I can't... yet" reframe that shifts a fixed mindset in a single word, and why it works where positive affirmations don'tHow to take your brain to court, the evidence-based tool for the thoughts that insist you're not enoughWhy your chatter isn't trying to destroy you, and what it's actually asking for If you've ever found yourself exhausted not by what's happening, but by what your mind keeps doing with it, this is the conversation for it. You can find Emiliya at: Website | Instagram | Mind Over Chatter Course | Episode Transcript Next week, we're sharing our conversation with Erin Weed, talking about her book Just One Word, and the surprisingly simple method she's used to help over a thousand people unlock their purpose and finally feel clear on who they are and where they're headed.
