Misha Kahn - “Curious Person at the Party Energy”

Artist and designer Misha Kahn’s furniture and lighting feel less like objects you own and more like creatures you coexist with — and once you've seen them, you'll never look at a chair the same way again. What most people don't know about Misha: he was given a sewing machine at age five, and started making clothes. That instinct to fabricate something from nothing, using whatever material is at hand — foam, fiberglass, glass, metalwork, cement, textiles — has driven him from that childhood bedroom all the way to the Whitney, the Walker Art Center, and the Dallas Museum of Art. In this episode, Misha joins host Alexandra Fairweather on one of John Chamberlain's foam couches — and if you've ever wondered whether the things around you could hold more beauty and more meaning, this conversation is for you. The 4 Chemicals That Run Your Brain…and Your Life | Tj Power

Four chemicals, produced by your brain, serve as a master switch for nearly everything you think, do, and feel. In no small way, they also control our lives. But, all too often, instead of harnessing them to fuel amazing experiences and outcomes, we are controlled by them. Today, we learn how to take back control and harness them for good. Our guide is TJ Power, lead neuroscientist at the DOSE Lab and the author of The DOSE Effect. His research investigates how modern sedentary, digitally saturated lifestyles are reshaping the brain chemicals that govern how we feel, connect, focus, and recover from stress. He has delivered live experiences to over 75,000 people at institutions including Oxford University, Amazon, and the NHS. His DOSE framework centers on four chemicals: Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. These chemicals evolved over hundreds of thousands of years for a very different experience of life. One with more movement, more connection, more sunlight, more sustained effort, and far less of what TJ calls dopamine land, the scroll-and-reward loop that phones have engineered into our days. In this conversation, you will explore: Why dopamine is not the reward chemical you were taught it was, and why the phone has hijacked the system that was supposed to motivate youThe difference between dopamine and oxytocin, and why TJ believes we are pursuing the wrong chemical as a speciesHow 90% of your serotonin is manufactured in your gut, and what ultra-processed food is actually doing to your moodWhy stress evolved to be released through physical movement, and why sitting still with your problems makes them worseThe 20 free behaviors from The DOSE Effect that recalibrate all four chemicals without cost, pills, or a major life overhaul If you have been wondering why certain things that used to feel easy now feel effortful, this conversation gives you a biological explanation and a practical path forward. You can find Tj at: Website | Instagram | Episode Transcript Next week, we are sitting down with Dr. Vonda Wright to talk about why most of what you have been told about aging is actually data about people who did nothing. The decline curve, it turns out, is negotiable, and ages 35 to 45 are the highest-leverage window. But she also makes the case that the door never closes. 3. Kevin Stinehart: Rebuilding Recess and Why Play Is a Developmental Need, Not a Want

Kevin Stinehart: Rebuilding Recess and Why Play Is a Developmental Need, Not a Want

We engineered the friction out of childhood, then acted surprised when kids could not handle it. Kevin Stinehart, the third grade teacher and play advocate featured in chapter 11 of Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation, joins The Ryan Vet Show to make the case that play is not a want. It is a developmental need. Kevin Stinehart teaches third grade at Central Academy of the Arts in Pickens County, South Carolina. He is a District Teacher of the Year, a South Carolina State Teacher of the Year candidate, and a Golden Apple Award winner. He also founded his school's Let Grow Play Club, a before and after school program with no budget and no curriculum. He opens the playground and lets kids play. In this conversation with host Ryan Vet, Kevin walks through what happens when you give children back unstructured time, and why the results are anything but soft. The data is the part that stops people. Inside the Play Club, physical incidents dropped from about 65 in one year to 32 the next, cut by more than half. The school hit 100 percent parent approval on its report card, a number that almost never happens in public education. And Kevin reframes the behavior conversation entirely. A lot of what gets labeled a discipline problem, he argues, is really a design problem. The third grader who cannot sit still after an hour of math is not misbehaving. He is doing what a developing brain is wired to do inside a system that was never built around healthy child development. Ryan connects this directly to his Loss of Friction thesis. Every scraped knee, every argument with a friend, every game where the rules break down is a rep. That is where kids build the capacity to adapt. Remove the friction and you remove the practice. Kevin's fix is not expensive, it is a mindset shift: stop being the cruise director, start being the park ranger. As he puts it, he is not there to control the wildlife, he is there to cultivate what is already growing. The conversation closes on why this matters more now, not less. AI will do the fast, factual work faster than any human brain. The capacities built through play, creativity, adaptability, and self direction, are exactly the things that get more valuable from here. Play was never frivolous. It is how kids become capable. In this episode: Why protection can quietly turn into overprotection, and how to tell the differenceThe Let Grow Play Club model: no budget, no curriculum, just unstructured play before and after schoolThe data behind the club: physical incidents cut from about 65 to 32 in a single year, and 100 percent parent approval on the school report cardWhy a lot of behavior issues are not behavior issues at all, but a consequence of school systems not designed around healthy child developmentFinland's 45-15 model: 45 minutes of instruction, 15 minutes of recess, all day longThe American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation of 60 minutes of play a dayThe park ranger versus cruise director mindset for parents and teachersHow friction in play builds the capacities kids cannot learn any other wayWhy play and the skills it builds, creativity and adaptability, become more important in the age of AI, not lessWhat it means to treat play as a fundamental need rather than a reward to be earnedReferenced in this episode: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt (Kevin is featured in chapter 11)Let Grow: letgrow.orgCentral Academy of the Arts, Pickens County, South CarolinaFinland's 45-15 recess modelAmerican Academy of Pediatrics: 60 minutes of play a dayConnect with Ryan Vet: Website: ryanvet.comCOLLIDE Newsletter: ryanvet.com/collideLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ryanvetInstagram: instagram.com/ryancvetBook Ryan as a Keynote Speaker: ryanvet.com/generational-speakerSubscribe to The Ryan Vet Show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and wherever you get your podcasts. 297. Agency Over Anxiety: Communicating in Uncertain Times

Why the most effective communicators help people see not just what's changing, but why it matters to them. For Sinéad Bovell, effective communication isn’t just about explaining what’s coming next—it’s about giving people the confidence and agency to engage with it.Bovell is a futurist, founder of the tech education company WAYE, and an expert advisor to the United Nations AI Advisory Body. Known for making complex topics accessible to broad audiences, she has spent years helping leaders, organizations, and young people understand the implications of artificial intelligence and other transformative technologies. Her approach starts with a simple principle: meet people where they are and connect big ideas to what matters in their lives. “If you scare people too much, if you disempower them, they do unsubscribe from the very activities you need them to lean into.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Bovell joins host Matt Abrahams to discuss how to communicate complexity without overwhelming people and why skills like adaptability and judgment are becoming more valuable in the age of AI. From making emerging technologies more accessible to building trust through relevance and empathy, they discuss what it takes to help audiences engage with change rather than fear it. 7. Tori Kelly on Motherhood, Faith, Meena, and New Album ‘God Must Really Love Me’

Tori Kelly on Motherhood, Faith, Meena, and New Album ‘God Must Really Love Me’

Tori Kelly first joined us back in 2013, long before Grammy Awards, sold-out tours, and billions of streams. Over the years we've had a front-row seat to her evolution from YouTube breakout, ‘American Idol’ contestant and singer-songwriter to one of the most respected vocalists of her generation. Along the way she's earned praise from artists like Billie Eilish, voiced Meena the singing elephant in the blockbuster 'Sing' franchise, and watched both that character and her rendition of “Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing” find new life with younger audiences online years after the film's release. Now the 33-year-old returns as a new mother — in 2025 she had her son Zayden with her bball player hubby André Murillo — and both motherhood and faith deeply inspired her new, sixth album, 'God Must Really Love Me'. She opens up about raising her son Zayden (who is all over this album both in the lyrics and vocally!), how becoming a parent has transformed her relationship with faith, the highs and lows of a marriage that's now more than a decade strong, and why this album feels like a time capsule of a pivotal season in her life. Tori also shares the stories behind songs like “Tokyo” and “Mine,” (amongst many others) discusses finding peace in a culture obsessed with comparison, reflects on the viral resurgence of her music, talks about voicing a singer named Suzy Day in the video game 'Stranger Than Heaven,' plus so much more. 224. Navigating Father Loss: Grief, Identity & Rebuilding Your Life with Liz Quinn and Nicci Scimone

Drop me a message or voice note! Losing a dad changes everything, and no one talks about the full picture of what that actually looks like. In this special episode in honor of Father's Dat, I'm joined by two incredible women who get it: Liz Quinn, host of the Healing Hearts podcast, and Nicci Scimone, certified grief coach. Together, we open up about losing our dads, the ripple effects that followed, and what it really means to rebuild your life after father loss—especially when you're also navigating motherhood. Liz lost her dad Edward to stage IV esophageal cancer in 2018, right as she was also supporting her mom through Alzheimer's and her eventual passing. Nicci lost her dad Donny 13 years ago to complications from a stem cell transplant following leukemia remission, and I share my own story of losing my dad Greg to prostate cancer just six months after losing my mom. We go deep on the things people don't say out loud: the paperwork, the funeral decisions, the vulnerability, the rebuilding, the continuing bonds, and how we're passing our dads' legacies on to our own children. In this episode, we dig into: ✨ The full, unfiltered reality of losing a dad and what the "after" actually looks like ✨ How father loss disrupts your identity, motivation, and sense of home ✨ Navigating layered grief and multiple losses in a short window of time ✨ The grief brain fog no one warns you about ✨ The unspoken logistics of loss: paperwork, funeral decisions, and estate overwhelm ✨ Continuing bonds and keeping your dad's presence alive even now ✨ Sharing your dad's legacy with your children ✨ Finding community, grace, and joy while still carrying grief This episode is for anyone carrying father loss, fresh or long-standing. Sometimes Blood Isn't Thicker Than Water

Hunter meets with three individuals who had less than ideal relationships with the people who raised them and discusses how those relationships have shaped their adult lives.  Meet this episode's strangers: - Latoya shares the story of a distant father and the fragile, beautiful bond they finally built in the last three months before he died. She describes his health struggles and the constant childhood fear that she’d get a call saying he was gone, and how that shaped her relationships with men. Yet in the end, she chose to show up for him at his lowest moment, ending what a friend called “a cycle of abandonment” in her family and reminding her father he was still worthy of love.  - Carmel opens up about how her relationship with her mother contributed to her letting go of the dream of “true love” and a soulmate, even as her friendships feel like the deepest soul connections she’s ever known. Growing up in a home where affection was transactional and physical touch was absent, she learned that love had to be earned through achievement, a pattern that persisted within her adult relationships. The most painful wound came when, during a fight, her mother told her she wished she had aborted her, words Carmel still hears in her head every day. - Leon discusses what it is like to have a narcissistic father and the pain that has been inflicted upon the family. Leon came to realize that it was impossible for his father to love and care for him the way he needed, and that the best thing was to keep his distance.
