#271: Dolly Cheerleader, Word of the Year, Spinal Tap Sequel

#271: Dolly Cheerleader, Word of the Year, Spinal Tap Sequel

Hello Bang Fam! It’s almost December, and if that doesn’t make your head spin then this past week in music, art, life, and stuff, will.

Dolly Parton continues to slay, performing at the Thanksgiving Halftime Show in a cheerleader outfit for the NRL, but some people (a dude) ain’t having it. We’re living for the responses to his opinion that a 77 year old woman should “dress her age”.

It’s Word of the Year time too! Where dictionaries across the world capture the year that was in one word. Or two. So what has captured the imaginations of language in 2023? Meanwhile we’re back in 1984 with Spinal Tap with the news that a sequel is planned for this iconic rock mockumentary.

Linda Evangelista doesn’t want to date anymore with a reason we all feel deeply, and The Prodigy have quietly changed the lyrics to one of their most divisive songs.

And we’re banging on about a great doco on the song factory of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and the return of wholesome TV with the Great British Bake Off.

    This episode contains strong language.

#270: Ghost Diana, Andre 3000’s flute album, Saltburn

It’s a veritable smorgasbord of pop culture this week, and yes we’re kicking off with the slide into soap opera for The Crown. It’s final season is upon us and oh boy, it’s a bit cooked. Zan is watching it all.

Nat Bass has revealed she’s in a loving relationship with a woman; how good is good news? And it’s Marie Claire’s turn with their Women of the Year issue, and it’s all about the Tillies. It’s 2023 and we’re still chasing the question “who is Banksy?”, and also dealing with the (heart)breaking news that Hall is suing Oates.

Elton John and Jake Shears are penning a musical about Tammy Faye Baker – please, take our money.  And Andre 3000 has emerged with a new album of ambient flute music! Oh Bjork just dropped a banger with Rosalia too, what a time!

Greg Sheridan’s hot takes on why women should be making more babies misses a few key points, and Myf and Zan have been in the movie theatre watching the much talked about new film Saltburn, and the David v Goliath movie Dumb Money.

#269: ARIAs goss, Jared Leto’s climb, Towel skirt

We’re fresh from the ARIAs and have all the behind the scenes chat to dish for you. Troye Sivan dominated, and he’s had a bit of a week aye? Being parodied by Timothee Chalamet, and being nominated for a Grammy. But the Grammy’s are being dominated by women overall, and we love to see them finally reflecting the culture.

Jared Leto has climbed one of the most famous buildings in the world, and we want to know why. While the Fab 5 are losing a family member, as Bobby Berk announces his departure from Queer Eye.

Magazines have cooked it this week too… why is McDreamy the Sexiest Person Alive in 2023? And why the heck is Kimmy K the GQ Man of the Year. Clearly, we have thoughts.

Meanwhile narcissism is on the cards, with the new iPhone apparently making selfies horrendous, and in FARSHUN, Balenciaga is once again taking the absolute piss with a towel skirt.

Myf is banging on about “mewing” (she’ll explain), why Zan has watched and loved the new doco on Donna Summer.

#268: Nipple bra, 1989, Not Hot Halloween

#268: Nipple bra, 1989, Not Hot Halloween

Myf and Zan are back and there’s a lot to catch up on. Like actively choosing to celebrate the headlights being on. Yep, we’re discussing Kimmy K’s nipple bra.

Dolly Parton is reportedly going to be presenting an award at the ARIA’s and with both of us heading along we’re wondering if this is our moment. And with Taylor Swift’s “1989” re-recording out, a great long read remembering that time Ryan Adams covered us has us thinking about how women’s pop music is digested differently to men’s singer-songwriter approach.

The shocking murder of Lillie James at the St Andrews School, and the response to it by their former principal, reflects the systemic issues with male violence, privilege, and protection. A brilliant editorial captures the feelings many of us have had, in it’s wake.

And Halloween has once again brought out the “hot” looks but frankly, we’re here for the freak show. And Heidi Klum has some excellent competition. Zan is banging on about Rhys Nicholson’s excellent memoir, and Myf is watching Theatre Camp.

#267: Britney Spears, Goatees, AI is a thirst trap

It’s finally here, Britney Spears highly anticipated memoir “The Woman In Me” is out, and Zan has read it all in one hit. We go in with all you need to know, as Britney reclaims her story. It’s been a big week for Beyonce too, as we mark 10 years since she visited Brunswick, and she releases a new perfume to mark the occasion. Maybe not related, but we’ll say they are.

Kings of Leon have come a long way from their southern charm, and are being called out for being absolute dicks at a festival by Groove Armada. Pass the popcorn. And a 90’s dream union has come true, with the children of icons continuing the dynasty.

Goatees are back (ew), and AI has a hotness problem. Have you noticed? Meanwhile we’re banging on about a brilliant doco on artist/activist Nan Goldin, and Brigid Delaney’s Wellmania.

Ray of sunshine in dark times

What can I say but this podcast is just so refreshingly lighthearted yet subliminally addressing some important issues in a balanced way! And to those who don’t like the “squeals of laughter”, I say, maybe start listening to classic radio! May you both continue to squeal every episode and bring a little more sunshine to our day!

Love it!

Long time listener, first time reviewer.
Listening to Bang On feels like the first time you’ve been accepted into your big sister’s room to listen to her chat with her girlfriends. It’s funny, clever and just so comforting. Exactly what we need to hear (and feel) with the world outside being total bin fire. Love you girls xoxo
