The Casual Criminalist

The Casual Criminalist by Simon Whistler has to be one of the best podcasts that I have ever listened to. The first episode of Casual Criminalist that I listened to was the episode on Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre which Simon mentioned in an Into the Shadows episode on various cults and I was immediately hooked in my Simon’s unique cold read show structure. Over a period of a year I listened from the most recent episode backwards all the way to the pilot (watching new episodes as they came out) and the journey I have gone on is one I wish I could do again. Between Simon’s development as a person and Simon’s ever-changing opinion on the death penalty it has been a treat. As an Australian that speaks German I die a little inside every time Simon tries to pronounce Australian or German place name but he does it in such an endearing way that you don’t mind. Please never change Simon! P.S. The fact you have never covered the last man executed in Western Australia: Eric Edgar Cooke and that is a travesty! His story is both hilarious and horrific and I implore you to get your incredible writer David Baker to cover it as he does the Australian cases the most justice.

Simon Whistler clearly found South Australia’s Snowtown murders absolutely hilarious. This is one of the saddest and most horrific crime stories in South Australian history involving some of the most disadvantaged people in our society. This is a podcast that presents true crime purely as entertainment. It shouldn’t be allowed. Totally disrespectful of victims. Shame on you.

I listen to this podcast quite often doing various things. I find it’s a great background listen, especially when I’m playing mmos or doing my laundry or working. I have especially loved the Sistler joining in with Mr Whistler. Simon has really interesting perspectives on cases and the legal consequences of the crimes. I love how he doesn’t focus on the disturbing details, but rather the facts. I also love how he covers cases from a wide range of countries, thank you writers!! I have been a long time listener and a fan of Mr Whistler for a few years now. If you don’t like true crime, he has a wide range of other YouTube channels and podcasts instead. I also just want to say thank you Simon, I love your content and the Casual Criminalist is by far my favourite. Keep up the amazing work. I also thank all the writers, you’re all so so talented and also have fascinating perspectives.
