Roelf Meyer, South African Ambassador: Trump has been misled

Ione Wells speaks to Roelf Meyer, South Africa’s new ambassador to the United States. In the 1990s, Meyer was one of the leading negotiators in the talks that helped bring apartheid to an end. Now he takes up his new post amid a serious rupture in relations with the US President Trump has cut aid, expelled the previous South African ambassador and offered refugee status to white Afrikaners he says are fleeing persecution, claiming the community faces “genocide”. The South African government rejects that allegation. Meyer, himself an Afrikaner, explains why he believes Trump has been given the wrong picture and how his experience negotiating the end of apartheid could help repair relations with Washington. “The notion of a mass attack on the Afrikaner was misrepresented by those that might have conveyed the message. I mean, I’m an Afrikaner from South Africa myself. And I can say that I’ve never experienced something of that kind. We found it strange. So the source is misrepresented, unfortunately, something that just doesn’t exist,” says Meyer.

Lawfare Daily: Emily Benson on What Economic Security Is, and How We Should Think About It

Emily Benson is the Head of Strategy at Minerva Technology Futures, a strategic consulting firm that advises companies on how geopolitics impacts their business. She has also spent time at CSIS and at the Department of Commerce, and has spent more time thinking about economic statecraft than most of us.  Emily joins Lawfare Contributing Editor and host of the Security Economics podcast Peter Harrell to discuss what economic security actually is and how we should think about it. She recently moved to Europe, and that gives her an interesting perspective on the issue, including whether Europe needs to diversify away from U.S. technology because of U.S.-related economic security risks. They also discuss China and how the U.S. and China are wielding economic security tools against each other.  This episode is part of the Security Economics podcast series, in which Peter Harrell and guests explore the intersection of economics and national security, how countries manage their economies to support national security, and how they deploy economic tools in support of geopolitical objectives.  To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. • Updating How We Think About Korean Peninsula Security

Updating How We Think About Korean Peninsula Security

Philip Shetler-Jones is joined by Sanghun Seok and Dr Edward Howell to ask whether 'unification' and 'denuclearisation' are still the lenses through which we should view security on the Korean Peninsula. For decades, Korean Peninsula security discussions have been framed by North-South relations and nuclear proliferation considerations. But North Korea has dropped the goal of unification and refuses to discuss denuclearisation, while both Koreas have become more prominent players in security dynamics far beyond North-East Asia. This prominence ranges from North Korean troops fighting in Ukraine to South Korea's growing role as an arms supplier to Europe. This episode asks what should replace the old framing. The episode explores: North Korea's current foreign and security policy priorities. Why North Korea is fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine, and the consequences. How South Korea is responding to the North's more expansive activity. The North-South relationship now that unification is off the table. The impact on the military balance in North-East Asia and the US alliance system. ·       What framework should replace unification and denuclearisation. Sanghun Seok is a former South Korean career diplomat, a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge, and a Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI. Dr Edward Howell is a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the University of Oxford and the Pharos Foundation, specialising in North and South Korea. His new book, A New Axis of Upheaval: North Korea, Russia, China, Iran, is released in December 2026.
