Ep.124: Machiavellian Moment in the Arctic

Germany and Sweden are among states deploying troops to Greenland. Yet Trump's power play for the island in the wake of his Venezuela raid has left much of Europe bewildered. As author and historian Luuk van Middelaar observes, the continent's geostrategic vulnerability has barged, uninvited, into view, and Europeans now are confronting the possibility of being pushed to the margins of a newly assertive American empire and left powerless. It’s the type of situation Luuk identifies as a Machiavellian Moment, a term borrowed from historian J.G.A. Pocock to describe the instant when polities must exchange lofty ideals, aimed at creating a more perfect future, for amoral strategies, to survive a perilous present. The EU "almost lived outside time," says Luuk, but now must contend with the prospect that “the EU no longer exists." Addressing its own mortality and meeting the Machiavellian Moment implies shedding a habitual, almost pedagogical approach to policymaking and favoring improvisation and action, such as converting car plants to armaments factories, creating a European Security Council, and moving ahead with a multinational presence on Greenland. The deployment, albeit tiny, for now, shows “strategic maturity” and should change "the calculus for Trump” by increasing the risk of an armed conflict with allies, says Luuk, who is founding director of the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics. Yet brinksmanship with the United States could hasten an unravelling of the NATO alliance. And other vexed questions loom. What becomes of a geopolitical European project that leans more toward Machiavelli than Monnet and is stripped of its higher ideals? And does an emboldened Europe risk reinvigorating a neo-colonialist mindset? Support the show

Colombian President Gustavo Petro: US military action is a real threat

I do believe US military action is a real threat, and the prospect of removing it depends on the ongoing conversations. The BBC’s South America correspondent Ione Wells speaks to Gusatvo Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president about his fears of US military action against his country. Petro, a former guerrilla fighter turned reformist leader, has been in office since 2022, championing social justice, environmental policies and regional diplomacy. He responds to Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting a military operation against Colombia “sounds good” and accusations that Petro himself is a drug trafficker—claims he strongly denies. Petro warns that the United States risks moving from global leadership to isolation through what he calls “imperial-style behaviour,” following the recent seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces. Is the Federal Reserve’s independence a pillar of democracy or a convenient shield that allows elected officials to duck their responsibilities? This week on Capitalisn’t, we confront a shift in Washington after the Justice Department served subpoenas on the Fed. Joining the conversation is Former Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Paul Tucker, who complicates the definition of central bank autonomy. Drugs ontwrichten onze samenleving. Ze ondermijnen veiligheid, zetten druk op justitie en hulpverlening, en laten diepe sporen na op straat, in het verkeer, op de werkvloer en in gezinnen. In het kader van de 5-voor-12-acties gaat Gewikt en Gewogen dieper in op een thema dat steeds urgenter wordt: hoe gaat justitie om met drugsgebruik, zonder de samenleving verder te laten ontsporen? Sinds 1 januari 2026 geldt in Limburg een nieuwe richtlijn van het parket over drugsbezit en drugsgebruik. Het klassieke onderscheid tussen soft- en harddrugs wordt losgelaten en er geldt één duidelijk uitgangspunt: bij vaststelling volgt altijd een gevolg — niet automatisch repressief, maar wel betekenisvol. We gaan in gesprek met Frank Bleyen, procureur des Konings in Limburg, over de keuzes achter dit beleid en de signalen die justitie hiermee wil geven. Aan bod komen onder meer: - drugsgebruik als factor van maatschappelijke ontwrichting; - normstelling: wat wil justitie vandaag duidelijk maken? - het spanningsveld tussen zorg en straf; - drugs in het verkeer en op de werkvloer als veiligheidsprobleem.
