Health Trackers Are Everywhere. Do Babies Need Them, Too?

More and more people are wearing technology in the form of fitness bands and smart rings. These devices track metrics such as heart rate, skin temperature and sleep. The latest frontier is health tech for babies — and it’s being supercharged by artificial intelligence. Sapna Maheshwari shares her family’s experience with health tracking and discusses whether it’s helping people or just adding to their anxieties. Guest: Sapna Maheshwari, a reporter covering new media companies for The New York Times. Background reading:  Aw, it’s baby’s first A.I. surveillance system. Will A.I. kill us? Can it hack my bank account? Your A.I. questions answered.Photo: Margeaux Walter for The New York Times For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily. Xi’s Just Not That Into You

Xi Jinping comes to Washington, the UN struggles for relevancy, and the Russian parliamentary elections turn out exactly as expected. Tommy and Ben break down Chinese President Xi Jinping's first state visit to Washington since 2015, including Trump’s personal airport greeting, and what leverage China has on everything from AI to rare earths to Iran.  Then a new list of disturbing AI headlines: a Bloomberg investigation on how AI-assisted targeting contributed to the US strike on an Iranian elementary school, a CNN report on how AI nearly triggered a war with China, and the Israeli election is being flooded with AI-generated slop. It's also UN General Assembly week in New York, where Trump met with Zohran Mamdani, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and threatened Iran.  The Houthis keep expanding their military campaign in Yemen, attacking Riyadh and Saudi oil facilities, and Trump can't seem to decide whether to help the Saudis or not. Russian parliamentary elections are setting Vladimir Putin’s party up for its largest majority ever.  The far-right AfD wins again in two more German regional elections, and Ben and Tommy give some thoughts on Trump’s arch and the Pentagon’s height and weight requirements. At the end of the show Ben speaks to Maher Bitar, executive director of National Security Action, about new polling that reveals why foreign policy is on the ballot in the midterms. • Why Russia has Europe on edge

Why Russia has Europe on edge

Earlier this week, Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party won a record number of seats in the country's parliamentary elections. Putin is expected to frame the result as an endorsement of his war with Ukraine. And, according to Ukrainian intelligence, he may mobilize hundreds of thousands more Russian troops before the end of the year.  All of this has Europe on edge. Because Russia hasn't just been targeting Ukraine – but Ukraine’s allies too. In the last few weeks, a Russian ship fired flares at a Danish military helicopter, NATO jets shot down a drone over Lithuania, and Germany thwarted a suspected Russian drone attack at one of their airports.  Many observers think Russia is intentionally trying to provoke NATO. But why? And what happens if NATO decides to fight back?   Victor Jack, POLITICO’s NATO reporter, joins us from NATO’s headquarters in Brussels. Sarah Matthews and Jason Horowitz: Trump Propaganda and Italian Fascism

The cozy White House Correspondents' Dinner, where Trump joked around with reporters, was only in July. But now he's ripping away press credentials and setting up state-run media. Sarah scolds the WHCA for bending the knee to Trump to begin with. And recent Italian history even foreshadowed the Trump era. Jason, in his new book, explains how Silvio Berlusconi learned how to become the central character in the media. The more he was talked about, the more powerful he became—and the more his opposition became trapped. Plus: a case study of Giorgia Meloni, her love of the hobbits, her opposition to Trump, and the rise of far-right populism in Italy. Also, a little hopium for Texas turning blue. And today's Republicans will always choose power over the interests of women. Sarah Matthews and The New York Times' Jason Horowitz join Tim Miller. show notes: Brendan on watching six straight hours of Trump TV Sarah on MAGA world trying to save Max Miller Jason's new book, "The Italian Job" Catch Tim's TNL rant on George W. • Does Donald Trump want to have allies?

    1d ago

Does Donald Trump want to have allies?

Perhaps, but they're not the same ones that the U.S. has historically aligned with. While addressing global leaders at the UN, Trump said he could either make a deal with Iran or "annihilate the Islamic Republic." He signed a security deal with Greenland, after threatening to seize the territory for months. He also rejected international calls for oversight of AI, as he prepares to host Chinese President Xi Jinping. As Trump forges his own brand of diplomacy, Washington correspondents Katie Simpson, Willy Lowry and Paul Hunter ask: Who are Trump's allies anymore? And does he even care?

How to Argue in the Trump Era Without Losing Your Mind

In this episode of “The David Frum Show,” The Atlantic’s David Frum opens with his reaction to the shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Ontario on Yom Kippur. David discusses the rise of violence against Jews around the world, and why condemnations of anti-sSemitic violence ring hollow when they come from people who spread myths about Jewish conspiracies. Then, David is joined by Jessica Tarlov, the co-host of “The Five” on Fox News and the “Raging Moderates” podcast. They talk about her new book, “I Disagree: Winning Arguments Without Losing Friends,” and how her upbringing helped shape her ability to disagree cordially. David and Jessica also discuss when to debate someone versus when to ignore them so as not to give them a platform. Finally, David ends the show with a review of the novel “Yesteryear” by Caro Claire Burke. - - - Sign up for David Frum’s newsletter alert. The Polls Look Fantastic for Democrats. Should We Believe Them?

On today’s episode, Galen, Clare, and Nate take a closer look at the latest midterms polling, where the data could be wrong, the likelihood for errors, and whether the apparent blue-wave story is as convincing as it looks. Then, they stress-test the case for and against the polls, examining both the bull and bear cases for believing the numbers. You can request a transcript by emailing transcripts@crooked.com.
