The £500 million marketing mistake
In 1991, CEO of one of the UK’s largest high street brands lost £500m in value overnight. He almost caused his company to go bankrupt, which ultimately led to his dismissal and a complete company rebrand. In today’s episode of Nudge, I share his story, explaining the psychology behind why this happened and some messaging advice that every marketer needs to know.

Customer Reviews
Always informative, Often Inspiring and a couple of suggestions
I really like this podcast. I almost always walk away with something to consider. The shows are between 10 and 20 minutes - so I can listen to a whole episode as I’m driving to the office. It doesn’t have so much fluff that other podcasts have such as playing music between segments, chit-chat/small-talk or running ads, both of which try my patience.
Phill gets into the topic quickly and then gets out just as fast. At the same time, he re-states what his guests are saying often with a small but relevant amount of elaboration. Very helpful.
It’s so well done that I’ve been burning the Nudge candle at both ends by listening from the beginning along with the most current episodes.
Suggestions:
1) More B2B - that’s the space I’m in. A number of B2C things just can’t be played in B2B.
2) Have the guests use microphones or at least test their audio ahead of time. Some are impossible to decipher. The great thing is, as mentioned above, Phill always recaps what they say so all is not lost.
Bottom line: Time well spent for anyone in marketing.
Jedi Mind Tricks
Fantastically insightful podcast. Phil serves up some truly amazing tips, insights, and exploration of behavioural science and how it applies to marketing. I regularly grab ideas from his show to test with clients and my own business. The guests he has on are fantastic and he has overloaded my reading list with great books he recommends.
