It’s 3am and my son finally fell back asleep on my right arm so I’m typing this slowly with just my non dominant hand to say 1) thank you for being such wonderful company. I love this podcast. 2) congrats Niko on your beautiful book launch last Friday night in Toronto. It was so wonderful to get to be there. 3) The Nana doesn’t “hate bread” she is observing Passover. During Passover, observant Jews refrain from eating leavened grains as a reminder of the time we fled slavery in Egypt and didn’t have time for the bread to rise before escaping. Instead, The Nana will be eating matzah for a week. Hence getting rid of the bread upon her arrival.
As a Jewish kid, specifically half Jewish on my father’s side, I always loved seeing Seth fully embracing his Jewish side despite not having a Jewish mother. It meant a lot to have that representation.
So if either of you are in Toronto next spring and are looking to attend a Seder, you are both cordially invited to our “Palsover” (the Friendsgiving of Passover) and please bring all your questions. Part of the tradition (as Summer could have told you) is sharing the stories with the as of yet uninitiated, and answering their questions as a way to deepen our connection to our rituals. There’s lots of asking “why do we do this?” And lots of interpretations and dialogue.
Update: it’s nearly 4am and he’s still not in his crib. When’s the next episode out?
