No More Excuses + Votto Still Bangs!

Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning kick off the final hour of the program with their thoughts on the Maple Leafs' goaltending and Ilya Samsonov's confident play alongside Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. The trio dive into the Eastern Conference playoff picture, how the Leafs stack up in the Atlantic, and what's behind Toronto's past shortcomings in the postseason, before looking over the current Hart Trophy race. Later, we head down to Florida and check in with Blue Jays radio analyst for Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Chris Leroux (28:15)! He shares his early thoughts on Toronto's camp, what his former teammate Joey Votto can bring to the team, and how cerebral of a presence he can be.

The FAN Morning Show’s Got Talent

The FAN Morning Show’s Got Talent

On hour two of The FAN Morning Show, Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning continue talking more about hockey and the Maple Leafs. They look at the matchup with the Hurricanes and if it should be used as a measuring stick in the Eastern Conference as well as how Toronto has earned the reputation of blowing leads. They bring on Leafs insider and analyst, former GM, Gord Stellick for his weekly hit talking about Toronto and how the team, and its fans, shouldn’t be concerned about who they may play in the first round. They also look at if there were any positives in that loss on Saturday and if they took away from it the same way Nylander and Keefe did. To end the hour, Ben and Brent welcome in-studio Canada's Got Talent judges Trish Stratus and Kardinal Offishall (34:57) to talk about the new “Million Dollar” season of the show that premieres Tuesday as well as some of their Toronto sports connections and loves.

Leafs Luck Runs Out + Votto Goes Deep

Leafs Luck Runs Out + Votto Goes Deep

Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning kick off the show on the Maple Leafs and the tough loss on Saturday night where they blew a lead late in the game to get defeated in a shootout. The boys talk about the special teams that continue to struggle, the absence of Mitch Marner and Sheldon Keefe tinkering with the line; Ilya Samsonov continuing to shine despite the loss; Nick Robertson getting back on the score sheet and his ceiling; among other things. Before the end of the hour, the morning duo hit on the Blue Jays camp and what we saw from Joey Votto (22:12). How does that change the thinking of where Joey is at and what his contribution can be to this team.

Leafs Biggest Flaw? + Jays 5th Starter

On hour two of The FAN Morning Show, Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning focus on the goaltending and how much of a step forward Ilya Samsonov has taken. The boys discuss where the scale is right now between him & Joseph Woll and how they see it playing out rest of the season. In the back half of the hour, B&B bring on Sportsnet 590 The FAN’s Sam McKee (25:14) of Real Kyper & Bourne for his take. Will it just go to the hot hand at the end of the year? And does it matter who it is as long as they’re stopping pucks? Ben & Brent take some time to discuss the Blue Jays and their pitching situation especially around the rotation. What if Bowden Francis is good, or maybe just really reliable, come the regular season? The hour ends with the daily Wake and Rake!

Bit worse, still good

The show is basically what it’s always been. Smart, wide-ranging, good chats. Toronto-focused, but not exclusively.

But it’s missing something without Brunt or somebody *like* Brunt. Get a writer type, longform thoughtful person; not a stats guy, or another news guy. You need a good conversationalist that can take the conversation to another level.

Couple minor gripes: the mix isn’t good (it’s quiet, while the ads are super loud), I have no idea why you break up the show into two files (very annoying), and a lot of your guests have crap connections and don’t do basic things (Buck often has an echo because he doesn’t use headphones. What gives?). A lot of easy fixes to make the show better, but for some reason you don’t do it.
