Eps. 62- Hotel Fire Fraud and Poisoned Tinned Salmon Sandwiches?

In this episode we discuss two cases where Sir Sidney Smithwas engaged by the defence team at trial to prove the innocence of their client. The first case was the trial of Sidney Harry Fox, for themurder of his mother Roseline.  As well as looking into the possibility that Fox wasn’t guilty, we discus the way in which the evidence was presented at trial by the Home Office Pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury, and if he was pressured into drawing conclusions which the medical evidence didn’t support. The second case was the trial of Sarah Hearn for the murder,by poisoning, of her sister Minnie and her neighbour Alice Thomas.  We look into why the evidence for Minnie’spoisoning was likely the result of contamination from Cornwall’s apparently toxic soil, and go on to talk about how Sidney Smith proved that the Prosecutions theory of when (and even how) Alice was poisoned was demonstrably wrong.   Scottish word of the week- “Lang may yer lumb reek.”   Use Code Hooked for 10% off your tickets at https://www.crimecon.co.uk/ Support this podcast by buying us a coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/hookedontruecrime   References. Eps.56: The Great Escapes: Uncovering France's Most Daring Prison Breaks/Michel Vajour

Michel Vajour, known as the "King of Escape," offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of prison breaks. Born in 1951 in northern France, Michel's childhood was anything but ordinary. After being abandoned by his parents, he was raised by an aunt who loved him dearly until her untimely death. This left him in the care of his alcoholic parents, pushing him toward a life of rebellion and petty crime. At just 18, Michel became a father and struggled to leave his criminal past behind. Despite working at a factory, he found himself drawn to the thrill of joyriding in stolen cars, which ultimately led to his arrest for grand theft auto. Michel's first stint in prison lasted 30 months, during which he became known as a problem prisoner. He fell into the wrong crowd, and his criminal activities escalated. He later stated that his time in prison only deepened his criminal tendencies, as he learned from other inmates. Michel's most notorious escapes involved elaborate planning and daring execution, often utilizing unexpected methods. One of his most famous escapes was a helicopter heist that became legendary in France.
