Single Malt History with Gareth Russell

I listen to a lot of history podcasts, but this is one of the main ones where I never miss an episode. There is intellectual rigour combined with Gareth Russell’s superb storytelling. This means you get all the facts but also the human stories. Russell is never deliberately over emotional but his natural warmth and compassion shine through. If you can get through the episodes about the Titanic without at least a lump in your throat, you have a harder heart than me.

One of my favourite podcasts. Thoroughly enjoy the completely diverse topics ranging through literally every century & continent. As a citizen of the north of Ireland it’s wonderful that the history of the Emerald Isle , north & south gets a mention! Gareth is a great communicator with an engaging personality & infectious sense of humour. ☘️

How much do i love Gareth? Let me count the ways! Gareth’s a wonderful public speaker, full of warmth, knowledge and personality. He’s a superlative historian, he always manages to describe his subjects with humanity. Never before have i felt sorry for Franz Ferdinand. But, Gareth’s re-telling of the story included some important context, so FF was a living, breathing man, and not just a name in a textbook about WWI. Gareth covers more contemporary history, as well, which i absolutely adore. History isn’t all about the Tudor’s and the Stuart’s, after all. I don’t dislike them, as a subject, but there are other Royal dynasties to talk about. To review: Gareth is excellent.

Found this via a Rex Factor Podcast recommendation, after their Queen James interview with Russell. Already listened to 4 episodes and pleased to see such a great back catalogue awaiting.
