The In Depth Pet Shop Boys Podcast is one of those rare fan-led shows that actually earns its name. It doesn’t recycle obvious talking points , and they really do dig into the detail, the context, the production history. All of the divinely weird corners of the Biy’s catalogue, and all the things casual coverage usually ignores. It’s clearly made by people who don’t just like Pet Shop Boys, but genuinely live and breathe them.
To me what stands out most, though, is the tone. Graham and Chris come across as properly warm, funny, and completely unpretentious. They’re knowledgeable without being smug about it, and they’ve got that easy chemistry where it feels like you’re just listening in on two friends obsessing over something they love. Even when they go deep into obscure remixes or production credits, it never feels like a history lesson.
There’s also a strong sense of community running through it. They clearly understand what these records and tours mean to fans, not just as music but as moments in people’s lives. They are always asking for feedback from their listeners and other Petheads. And I think feedback like that is invaluable. Episodes often feel less like analysis and more like shared memory, which is probably why it lands so well with listeners.
I’ve had the pleasure of going on a Pet Shop Boys tour organised by Chris last year, and that kind of sums up the spirit of it… properly fan-driven, slightly mad in the best way, and built around a sense of fun.
Honestly, it’s always a joy to have a new episode drop. It’s a highlight because it feels alive, not scripted, and because the hosts clearly care. That comes through in every episode.
If you’re already a Pet Shop Boys fan, it’s basically essential listening. And if you’re not, it might be the kind of deep dive that makes you realise how much there actually is to unpack in their work.
Also, it’s because of this podcast that we were lucky enough to get the
“Album” keyring at the obscure concerts last week…. Just saying. 😉.
