Money & Us

Anna Brading

Money and Us with Anna Brading is your reminder that it’s never too late to take control of your finances and change your life. Anna is a Certified Financial Education Instructor, author and mum who knows first hand what it feels like to do all the things you’re taught to do and still feel completely lost with money. She figured it out, changed her life, and has since built a community of over 250,000 people, written a bestselling book and has been invited to Parliament to advocate for better financial education for all. Now she’s here to help you do the same. Most of us were never taught how money really works. Almost three quarters of UK adults never received any financial education at school, so it’s no wonder so many of us feel overwhelmed, underprepared and like we’re somehow behind. We’ve convinced ourselves it’s too complicated, that we’ve left it too late, or that the advice out there just doesn’t apply to our lives. The reality of juggling work and kids, caring for elderly relatives, going through health challenges, and still showing up with a smile on our faces. What if the right conversation, at the right time, could change everything? Every week, Anna sits down with some of the UK’s leading experts for honest, real conversations about money in the context of real life. From entrepreneurship and investing to relationships, grief, addiction, parenthood and raising the next generation, these are the conversations that meet you where you are right now, not where you think you should be. Money and Us is a space where no question is too small, no starting point is too late, and nobody is made to feel judged or behind. Most of us are figuring this out as we go, and that’s exactly what this podcast is here for.

Budget 2026: What It Really Means for Your Money (I Went to Downing Street)

Budget week brings a lot of noise, and it can be hard to tell which headlines will actually make a difference to your money. In this special bonus episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna goes through everything that was announced, if we will be better off, and how much of it is relevant to you right now. From households getting help with energy bills and savers keeping their cash ISA allowance, to self-employed parents and carers gaining new support and side hustlers with more room to get started, there were measures announced aimed at supporting families and households. There were tax announcements too, from savers facing a higher tax rate on their interest to everyone still held back by frozen tax thresholds that work like a stealth tax on every pay rise, and Anna asks whether the help with energy bills will make a difference if costs keep climbing this winter, and whether it's reaching the people who need it most. Straight after the Budget, Anna took her own questions to Downing Street and shares some of the ministers' answers, including what a new starter ISA for first time investors could look like. With forecasts pointing to slow growth, and some of last year's predictions not playing out, the big question is whether we'll actually be better off, and why building your own financial buffer matters more than ever. There's a two question fact or fiction to guess along with too, with the answers saved for the end. None of us can control what the Chancellor does, so the focus is on what we can, from building your emergency fund and making the most of your ISA allowances to getting your money working for you, even a little at a time, with a nod to the Clare Francis episode on how investing can play a part. If you're in your 30s, 40s or early 50s and trying to work out what this Budget means for your family, your savings or your side hustle, this will help you see where you stand and decide what to do next. Key Moments: • Fact or fiction: two questions to guess along with • Why money is so tight for the government this year • Anna's trip to Downing Street straight after the Budget • Energy bills: who gets help and whether it's enough • The cash ISA reversal and the new starter ISA • Who gains: carers, self employed parents and side hustlers • Who pays more: savings interest and frozen tax thresholds • What it means for the state pension • Are we actually going to be better off? • The practical steps to take control of your own plan • Fact or fiction: the answers Chapters:00:00 Budget Week: What It Means For Your Money01:14 Fact Or Fiction: Guess Along03:06 Why The Government Is Short Of Money03:49 Anna's Trip To Downing Street04:28 Energy Bills: Is The Help Enough?10:12 Why The Cash ISA Allowance Isn't Dropping11:53 The New Starter ISA For First Time Investors15:23 Help For The Sandwich Generation16:13 Paid Parental Leave For Self Employed Dads18:08 The Carer's Allowance Cliff Edge18:43 Side Hustles And Small Business Boost22:06 State Pension And The Tax On Savings Interest23:56 The Stealth Tax That's Still Frozen24:31 Are We Actually Better Off?26:17 Why Building A Financial Buffer Matters Now27:15 Fact Or Fiction: The Answers27:47 What You Can Control Sign Up for My 7-Point Budget Breakdown:http://mentoramoney.com/budget Follow Anna Brading: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentoramoney/?hl=en-gb LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annajoybrading/ Website: https://www.mentoramoney.com Follow Money & Us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentoramoney/?hl=en-gb TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@moneyanduspod?_r=1&_t=ZN-97TWiGIYThe YouTube: https://youtube.com/@moneyanduspod?si=eezWMsuQ7uY4ipBP Buy Money Mentor: https://amzn.eu/d/03ISOm6z

Are Women Missing Out on Building Wealth? Here's Why with Dr Ylva Baeckström

Women have long been told they don't invest because they lack the confidence or the knowledge, but after 15 years inside banks like Morgan Stanley and Coutts, Dr Ylva Baeckström's research says otherwise. In this episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna talks to Ylva, Senior Lecturer in Finance at King's Business School and author of Gender and Finance, about the gender investment gap, why it exists and what we can all do to close it. Ylva's research shows that women are risk aware rather than risk averse, and that their portfolios often outperform men's. She explains how decades of exclusion, money habits that start in childhood and an industry built around one type of investor have kept so many women on the sidelines, and what that can mean for earnings, pensions and retirement. Anna and Ylva also look at what happens when women are simply given the chance to learn, from the results of a seven day investing challenge with Jill Scott MBE to the difference a female advisor can make, and what it all means for anyone ready to start, whether that's learning from trusted sources or backfilling a pension after a career break. For anyone who has ever felt investing wasn't for people like them, or that they've left it too late, Ylva shows why it's never too late to start. Key Moments: Fact or fiction: how women's portfolios compare with men'sWhat Ylva saw working inside the banksWhy investing was built by men, for menHow films and media shape who we picture as an investorWhy women hold cash but invest less of itWhy overconfidence hurts returns, and why risk aware beats risk averseHow AI compares with human financial advisorsWhat happened when women were taught to invest in seven daysWhy women invest more with a female advisorHow motherhood, career breaks and retirement widen the gapWhat wealth means to YlvaChapters:00:00 Women Aren't Risk Averse, They're Risk Aware01:04 Fact Or Fiction: Do Women Underperform At Investing?02:13 Why The Gender Investment Gap Matters To Ylva03:28 What She Saw Inside The Banks04:37 When Women Were Locked Out Of The Stock Exchange05:22 Wolf Of Wall Street And The Alpha Problem11:38 What Is The Gender Investment Gap?13:03 Why Holding Cash Costs You Money14:15 Why Girls Are Already Behind By 1622:08 The Myth About Women And Confidence24:14 Risk Averse Or Risk Aware?28:20 Crypto: Investing Or Gambling?30:11 Can AI Beat Human Financial Advisors?36:57 What People Really Want From A Financial Advisor38:23 The Seven Day Challenge With Jill Scott41:44 Redesigning Finance Without The Jargon48:07 Why Financial Advice Is Out Of Reach For Most50:14 Why Women Invest 11% More With A Female Advisor56:26 How Motherhood And Career Breaks Widen The Gap59:51 Why Women Retire With Half The Portfolio1:00:30 What To Do Today1:03:06 What Wealth Means To Ylva Mentioned in the episode: - Join Investing Club https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSejxjdXh2RQSHm7NsfIxn1CsRaBK8KbG1LOXU1EMpsungwhag/viewform Follow Dr Ylva Baeckström: Website: https://ylvabaeckstrom.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drylvabaeckstrom/ Follow Anna Brading: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentoramoney/?hl=en-gb LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annajoybrading/ Website: https://www.mentoramoney.com Follow Money & Us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentoramoney/?hl=en-gb TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@moneyanduspod?_r=1&_t=ZN-97TWiGIYThe YouTube: https://youtube.com/@moneyanduspod?si=eezWMsuQ7uY4ipBP Buy Money Mentor: https://amzn.eu/d/03ISOm6z

Are You Saving Too Much and Investing Too Little? With Clare Francis, Director of Savings and Investments at Barclays

When Clare Francis lost her first husband in 2011, the grief came with a very practical problem too, because his income was gone while the mortgage and the bills were still there. In this episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna talks to Clare, Director of Savings and Investments at Barclays and a financial journalist for more than 15 years, including as Editor in Chief at MoneySupermarket, about expecting the unexpected, and what it costs us emotionally and financially when we don't plan for it. Life rarely sends a warning, whether it's a global event that rattles the markets or something far closer to home, like losing an income or childcare costs that double almost overnight. Clare talks about what those moments looked like in her own life, how the investments she'd started years earlier gave her room to adjust, and why a financial buffer can't ease the emotional side of difficult times but can take a great deal of the pressure off. Clare also gets into why so many of us feel comfortable saving but frightened of investing, and why the fear of losing everything is far bigger than the realistic risk over the long term. For anyone who has put off investing because it felt too risky, too complicated or too late, she makes the case for starting small, and for talking about money with the people around us, because the confidence that builds reaches well beyond our finances. If you've ever put off building a financial cushion because nothing has gone wrong yet, Clare's story is a good reason to start. *Capital at risk when investing. For education, not financial advice. What It Takes To Rebuild Your Identity From Nothing with England International Anita Asante

Anita Asante won every domestic trophy English football had to offer in a single season, a quadruple no Arsenal team has repeated since, while several of her teammates still worked as teachers, police officers and firefighters because the women's game simply couldn't pay them to do anything else. In this episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna talks to Anita, a former England international with 71 caps who played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa across nearly two decades, about building a career on a foundation that barely existed, and what it cost her to keep rebuilding it. Anita talks candidly about what it means to give your whole life to an industry, a club, a profession, and have it taken away from you at the drop of a hat. Even once she was finally being paid to play, financial security in women's football never really settled. A defining moment for Anita was having a World Cup place she'd worked her entire career towards taken away from her without explanation, shortly followed by an injury that ensured her playing days were firmly behind her. Losing football meant losing the identity she'd built her whole life around, so Anita had to work out who she was without it. She went on to coach the next generation, moved into broadcasting and started a PhD examining the very structures that shaped her own career, proving to herself along the way that she could be just as strong a version of herself outside the game as she ever was inside it. If you've ever had to rebuild your sense of security, financial or otherwise, from nothing, Anita's story is for you. Why Losing His Mum Sparked A Business That's Helped A Million People with Sam Grice

In 2016, a single phone call changed the entire course of Sam Grice's life. He lost both his parents within moments of each other, thousands of miles from home, and out of that grief built a company that has since helped more than a million families through their own loss. In this episode of Money & Us, Anna sits down with Sam, founder of Octopus Legacy, to talk honestly about death, money and the parts of loss nobody warns you about, a topic that felt especially close to home for Anna at the time of recording. Sam talks openly about those first disorientating days, the shock that can mimic physical pain, the strange experience of planning a funeral while barely able to think straight, and finding himself comforting visitors who had come to comfort him. Within six months of his mum's death, that experience had already become the seed of the business he runs today. From there the episode moves into the practical realities so few of us ever prepare for, from what happens when a will is out of date to the eighteen months it can take to fully settle an estate. Sam explains why families so often end up selling homes, untangling pensions and facing complicated tax decisions at the exact moment they're least able to think clearly, and why simply knowing who to call can change everything. This episode is for anyone who has been through loss, anyone supporting someone who has, and anyone who has never quite got round to writing a will. Psychotherapist Paula Williams on The Hidden Anxiety Behind How We Spend, Save And Avoid Our Bank Account

Paula Williams has spent more than 25 years in the therapy room watching money reveal what's really going on underneath the surface of people's lives, long before the numbers ever come into it. In this episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna talks to Paula, an award winning BACP accredited psychotherapist specialising in trauma, addiction and abuse, about what's really driving our anxiety, our spending habits and our vulnerability to being taken advantage of. Paula explains why money almost always comes down to one thing, safety, and how that single word explains two seemingly opposite behaviours. Some people hoard, terrified of spending even when they can clearly afford to, while others spend to chase a high that never quite lasts. Both, she says, are looking for the exact same feeling. She talks honestly about avoidance too, why ignoring a banking app or an unopened letter gives temporary relief while the underlying problem only grows, and why simply becoming aware of an old pattern is the first real step towards changing it. The episode moves into scams and grooming, including a story about a client who lost her life savings to someone she met online, and why intelligence has nothing to do with who becomes a target. Paula unpacks economic abuse in detail too, the kind that can hide behind a big house and a lovely holiday while someone has no real access to their own money, and why it so rarely looks the way people expect abuse to look. If money has ever made you anxious without knowing exactly why, or you suspect someone close to you might be dealing with something worth a closer look, this one's for you. Key Moments: Why hoarding and overspending both come from the same fearThe temporary relief of avoidance, and its real costHow scammers target vulnerability, not intelligenceWhat economic abuse actually looks like behind closed doorsWhat wealth means to Paula after everything she's seenChapters:00:00 Meet Paula Williams00:57 Fact or fiction: economic abuse in the UK02:19 Why money anxiety is rising04:11 Where our money fears begin07:52 Why spending can feel unsafe12:24 How much money is enough?17:49 The effect of news and financial uncertainty24:22 When money habits become a source of anxiety27:39 Why we avoid looking at our finances30:10 How scammers use urgency33:29 The shame people feel after being scammed34:19 How a romance scam builds trust40:30 What economic abuse can look like45:47 Recognising control and restriction47:57 How to support someone experiencing abuse51:35 A story of recovery and hope54:14 Spotting your own warning signs57:33 Practising self-compassion59:59 Why self-care matters01:03:06 Pausing to ask what you need01:06:11 Replacing self-judgement with curiosity01:12:25 Learning to reflect on your feelings01:15:09 When to seek extra support01:17:58 What wealth means to Paula References: The statistic referenced in this episode comes from 2025 research by Surviving Economic Abuse, conducted by Ipsos UK. How to Find Your Voice and Speak with Confidence with Caroline Goyder

Caroline Goyder has spent her career teaching people that the way they speak can matter just as much as what they say. In this episode of the Money & Us podcast, Anna talks to Caroline, voice coach and bestselling author of Gravitas, whose TEDx talk has now been watched more than 11 million times, about the surprising, largely unspoken link between how we speak and how far we get in life. Caroline shares research most of us have never encountered on how voice shapes the way we're perceived, trusted and even paid, along with why that link plays out so differently for men and women. She explains why voice is really about breath, and why breath is really about safety, something she believes we've largely lost touch with as a culture. Caroline speaks candidly about her own journey, including a formative moment early in her career when a talk went badly wrong in front of a large audience, and the practical, almost startlingly simple techniques she now teaches, from chanting for five minutes a day to the physical postures performers use to take up space and calm their nervous system before walking into a room. This episode is for anyone who has ever felt their voice let them down in a moment that mattered, and for anyone curious about the physical foundations of confidence and success. Key Moments: • How voice shapes trust, perception and pay• Why the research plays out differently for men and women• The moment a talk went wrong in front of a huge audience• How chanting changed Caroline's voice in three months• The physical techniques performers use to take up space• What wealth means to Caroline after losing her father Chapters: 00:00 Introduction01:13 Can Your Voice Affect Your Success?05:45 Why Your Voice Matters at Work09:49 Why Public Speaking Feels So Scary11:40 Caroline’s Worst Public Speaking Experience14:20 How to Train and Improve Your Voice18:57 Why a Lower Voice Sounds More Confident21:23 How to Take Up Space and Command a Room24:23 How to Prepare for a High-Stakes Conversation28:13 How to Control Nerves When Speaking30:12 Why Your Voice Matters More in the Age of AI31:25 Where Real Confidence Comes From35:39 The Secret to Rehearsed Spontaneity40:02 How to Use Pitch and Intonation45:29 How to Sound Charismatic Without Trying49:09 What Famous Actors Taught Caroline About Confidence50:04 Minnie Driver’s Advice for Handling Criticism55:55 How to Ask for a Pay Rise With Confidence57:26 How to Speak With Authority in a Job Interview01:01:29 How to Stop Using Filler Words01:04:50 Why Great Speakers Are Made, Not Born01:06:21 Is Your Phone Making You a Worse Speaker?01:09:07 Caroline’s Biggest Lesson About Confidence01:10:24 Your Voice Is Part of Who You Are01:11:18 What Does Wealth Really Mean? When Your Financial Problems Aren’t Actually About Money with Money Mindset Expert Laura Moore

Two thirds of young people say their mental and physical health has been affected by their financial situation, and that statistic sits right at the heart of this conversation between Anna and Laura Moore, financial coach, financial wellbeing speaker and author of Find Your Wealth. Laura makes the case that money has been treated as its own separate category for far too long, sitting apart from wellbeing, gut health or fitness, when in reality it's deeply tangled up with all of it. What money mindset actually means, and just as importantly what it doesn't, is where Laura gets candid. It isn't manifesting, and it isn't something reserved for people who already think of themselves as spiritual or woo woo. She explains how your instinctive answer to a simple question like how do you feel about saving reveals a mindset that's already there, whether you've ever examined it or not, and why untangling that mindset can shift your relationship with money more than any budgeting app ever could. Wealth itself gets redefined here too, stripped right back from the obvious answer of freedom. Writing her book changed Laura's own definition entirely, moving from freedom of time and travel towards something far more holistic, built from presence, memories, friendships and the creativity she gets to express. About
