Lyme Rage: Why Your Calm Kid Suddenly Became Someone Else

A child is doing fine, doing homework, laughing easily, getting along with everyone, and then over a few weeks they become someone else. Explosive anger over nothing. Can't sit still. Can't focus. Grades fall off a cliff, and the school has one word ready: ADHD. In this solo episode, Dr. Chris Motley asks the question almost nobody in that meeting asks: what if the personality change didn't start in the child's personality at all, but with a tick bite nobody noticed? Dr. Motley explains why a sudden, overnight personality change in a child, explosive anger, isolation, loss of focus, deserves a second look before accepting an ADHD label. He breaks down why Lyme disease is called "the great imitator," the biology behind "Lyme rage," how to build a timeline that helps your pediatrician rule infection in or out, and which labs and herbs he trusts in his own practice. Timestamps [00:00:00] - The child who became someone else [00:01:46] - A mother's story: normal one week, unrecognizable the next [00:04:16] - The tick bite nobody noticed [00:05:13] - When ADHD becomes the label, and the guilt that follows [00:08:00] - Knowledge as relief: what the lab tests actually found [00:09:10] - How to test for Lyme disease the right way [00:13:42] - Lyme disease: the "great imitator" [00:15:13] - Why ADHD and Lyme symptoms overlap so closely [00:21:29] - The genetics of ADHD: DDC, MAOA, and the "warrior gene" [00:26:32] - Back to Lyme rage: how inflammation turns a gentle child aggressive [00:30:48] - Getting tested: why a standard Western blot can miss it [00:33:26] - Picking the right lab: Vibrant Wellness, IGeneX, DNA Connexions [00:36:48] - Chinese medicine and the liver: why anger lives in an organ [00:39:12] - The herb protocol: cat's claw, Japanese knotweed, cryptolepis [00:42:13] - Closing: "Trust what you see in your kid" Key Takeaways A sudden personality change is the single biggest clue. Motley's rule of thumb, echoed by Lyme specialists: gradual, lifelong attention and behavior issues usually point to real ADHD. A dramatic shift that happens within days or weeks, especially after time outdoors, is worth a second look for an infectious cause before settling on a behavioral diagnosis alone. "Lyme rage" is a real, named phenomenon, not a scare tactic. Lyme disease crossing the blood brain barrier can drive neuroinflammation that shows up as sudden irritability, anxiety, and explosive anger. It is documented by Lyme-literate clinicians and patient organizations, though it is not a formal psychiatric diagnosis. The lab you choose changes the answer you get. A standard five-band Western blot can miss a real Lyme infection if it does not happen to test for the specific Borrelia strain present. Comprehensive panels from labs built specifically for tick-borne disease test for a much wider range of strains and co-infections. This is not an anti-ADHD or anti-medication episode. Motley repeats, more than once, that he is not telling anyone to stop treatment or medication. The message is narrower: if a child's ADHD treatment is not producing progress, or the onset was sudden, it is worth asking your pediatrician whether an infection could be part of the picture. Build a timeline before your next doctor's visit. Write down when the behavior actually changed, whether it was sudden or gradual, and whether there was time outdoors, hiking, or in tall grass beforehand. That single piece of paper is what turns a vague conversation into a specific one. The liver-anger connection is Traditional Chinese Medicine's oldest lens on rage. In TCM, a congested liver is associated with unflushed histamine and irritability. Motley uses this as his starting point for herbal support, independent of whether Lyme disease is involved. The comfort matters as much as the information. Motley spends real time telling parents, in his words, that "the old medicine never blamed the child, never blamed the parent." For a parent who has done everything right and is still watching their child struggle, that reframe is arguably the most valuable thing in the episode. The 2 PM Brain Fog Clue: How to Tell If Your Brain Isn't Detoxing While You Sleep

If you have swollen lymph nodes, this episode will teach you how your mighty glymphatic system drains toxins from your brain to what in Chinese Medicine is called your stomach 12 point. In this episode, Doctor Chris Motley explains the ins and outs of caring for your lymphatic system and how to promote lymphatic drainage through the activation of your triple warmer in Chinese Medicine. He also shares how to look after your body's lymph flow while taking a GLP-1, and the right way to do lymphatic massage on yourself. Key Points from this episode: The recently discovered glymphatic system drains toxins from your brain into your stomach 12 point in Chinese Medicine. This system is powered by sleep: good sleep is essential (wear a sleep monitor to ensure you're getting the deep level of sleep needed for your glymphatic system!). How to know when you're not reaching the cleansing layer of sleep needed for your glymphatic system to operate fully: The tell is when your brain fog won't clear until 2 in the afternoon! Dr. Motley's Best Lymphatic Recommendations: 1) Lymphatic massage or ELT (electrolymphatic therapy) or self-massage and dry brushing (work your way UP, not down). 2) Herbs: Hemoguard helps support blood flow, which is an essential link to lymph flow: https://tinyurl.com/yvzbs8au Manjistha Supreme promotes good lymph flow: https://tinyurl.com/mu9u5yx7 How caring for your liver and spleen are important to the lymphatic system. Doctor Motley explains that in Chinese Medicine the spleen is in charge of moving your fluids from your food and drink through your body. How to know if your spleen is weak through a Chinese Medicine lens: Doctor Motley recalls a patient who suffered from spleen fatigue, and the tell-tale sign was a ring around the lips (chapped lips is a sign as well!). How to strengthen the spleen and liver to promote lymphatic health: Grass-fed sheep thymus: https://tinyurl.com/3kduh2n6 Grass-fed beef spleen https://amzn.to/3QS265f or a PMG supplement from standard process are Doctor Motley's recommendations for optimizing the spleen. Flush the liver with Dandelion root and Schisandra: https://tinyurl.com/a24kyuzz How to be mindful of proper lymph flow when taking a GLP-1. This is not an anti-GLP-1 episode (in fact Doctor Motley's own patients use them now and then), but it's advice for helping the medication work properly. If you're losing muscle, be on the lookout for fluid buildup. Take proteins that work for you, flush your liver, strengthen your spleen and get some moderate exercise to help protect your lymph flow while on GLP-1s. The emotions connected to your spleen in Chinese Medicine that could be affecting lymphatic drainage: worry, overthinking (or, in Chinese Medicine terms "too much mind."), obsessing over outcomes. If you're a chronic worrier, this could affect your immune function. To tend to these emotions well, Doctor Motley recommends emotion work like EMDR. Want more of The Ancient Health Podcast? The Hidden Infection Behind Your Post-Nasal Drip

Fall doesn't always cause your sinus congestion. It just knows how to find whatever was already sitting there. In this episode, Dr. Chris Motley walks through the Traditional Chinese Medicine map that connects the exact location of a headache or a patch of sinus pressure to a specific internal organ, and why that map keeps showing up in his practice. Key Takeaways Your headache location is diagnostic, not random.A two-week case of post-nasal drip traced back to a bladder infection: Dr. Motley's patient cleared her sinus congestion only after he treated her bladder and kidney meridian points, a connection her prior doctor visits hadn't made. Fall triggers stored trauma, not just cold weather. Because the body encodes every sense during a traumatic event, seasonal cues like cooler air and shorter days can resurface them as physical congestion.  Dr. Motley argues sinuses, kidney nephrons, gallbladder bile ducts, and the brain all develop from the same cell line, which is why infections jump between them. Standard embryology backs the sinus and brain half (both are ectoderm) but not the kidney (mesoderm) or gallbladder (endoderm) half.  00:00:00 Opening: why fall seems to trigger sinus headaches, post-nasal drip, and migraines 00:01:19 Welcome to the Ancient Health Podcast 00:01:33 The core rule: where your headache sits tells you which organ is involved 00:03:05 Case study: the E.coli bladder infection hiding behind a patient's post-nasal drip 00:04:19 Why fall specifically resurfaces old emotional trauma as physical congestion 00:06:34 EMDR, neurofeedback, and tapping: clearing the trauma before it becomes sinus pain 00:11:54 The organ map: bladder, gallbladder, stomach, triple warmer, small intestine, and more 00:14:13 Get checked: the hidden UTI, kidney, and gallbladder infections behind your headache 00:16:30 Beam Minerals and why mineral depletion undercuts everything else on this list 00:17:53 The biofilm problem: how old strep and mono build a fortress in your gut 00:24:29 The embryology answer: why sinuses, kidneys, gallbladder, and brain get infected together 00:28:25 The protocol: sprays, acupressure points, and the antimicrobial herbs he actually uses 00:33:56 Homeopathy, lab testing, and how to decide where to start Dr. Motley's go-to herbal recommendations: Cat’s Claw Supreme: https://tinyurl.com/yu8ntvu7 Japanese Knotweed: https://tinyurl.com/296dkaby Alchornea Supreme: https://shorturl.at/3HSJ Elderberry Supreme: https://tinyurl.com/kxvnrtep Echinacea Supreme: https://tinyurl.com/ms9ectd4 Usnea Supreme: https://tinyurl.com/ye5ks88c DesBio Headache: https://dbscript.com/product/headache/, Dr. Motley’s practitioner code is f9367150 *Most of us are mineral deficient and we don’t even know it! Your Gut Is Recirculating Your Own Bad Estrogen

Why are so many young women experiencing painful periods, endometriosis, Hashimoto's and hormonal chaos? After falling ill with Graves Disease in medical school, functional endocrinologist Dr. Cassie Smith made it her life’s mission to chase these kinds of questions. In her new book Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones (https://a.co/d/0gbCrVD6) she tackles the real gut-hormone connection behind estrogen dominance, PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, and painful periods. Dr. Smith shares the answers she found, a roadmap for better health, better periods and common-sense steps to become the CEO of your own health.  In this episode you will learn:  Why younger women are struggling with their periods Why low progesterone is so common in women in their 20s How constipation and poor fiber intake worsen PMS, bloating, and breast tenderness The impact of long-term birth control use on hormone production Simple, affordable lab tests most OBs don't order but should Exactly how your gut affects your hormones, step by step, by way of your vagus nerve. How a young person could experience a cycle of stress, a bacteria or strep infection, then their antibiotics for treating the strep as well as birth control and acid-blockers can impair their guts affecting their cycle. How, if, as women, our estrogen leaves our body down the four-hydroxy pathway (the pathway that can lead to cancer), more often when we have increased visceral fat, excess stress or intense gut dysbiosis. How important our health is, and the value in taking responsibility for our good health. Self-value, seeing the sun enough in a day and movement all play a role in balancing our hormones.   Not only can excess estrogen affect our moods, but it puts extra stress on our bodies revving up our cortisol and lowering progesterone (the calming hormone), throwing our mood and sleep out the window.  Nutritional changes can make a difference. Avoid sugar in your food and drinks (read the  labels!), and aim for thirty-five grams of fiber for regular, healthy bowel movements. Estrogen dominance from dysbiosis doesn’t necessarily mean you have enough of the estrogen you need.  How having a Dutch test every few years is incredibly useful for locating early signs of hormonal imbalances.  A roadmap to fix painful periods. Laser in on how much sugar you’re eating (and drinking!) Don’t eat wheat made in America if you have Hashimotos, because it may cause a high TPO antibody to attack your thyroid. How babies rely on their mother’s thyroid until 18 weeks in-utero, so if you want to get pregnant, optimizing your thyroid is a must.  Want more of The Ancient Health Podcast? Ask Your Doctor These 4 Words Before You Take a Statin with Dr. Philip Ovadia

After performing thousands of open-heart surgeries, Dr. Philip Ovadia recognized that the vast majority were preventable…if his patients had improved their metabolic health in the first place. In this episode, Dr. Chris Motley sat down with heart surgeon, author and podcaster Dr. Philip Ovadia to learn about the underrated relationship between insulin resistance and heart disease, and what you need to know to arm yourself at home and in the doctor’s office. Small correction from the intro: Dr. Ovadia is a board-certified cardiac surgeon, not a cardiologist. He has performed over 3,000 heart surgeries across 25-plus years If heart disease has been the number one killer for so long, isn’t it possible that we’re tackling it the wrong way? Dr. Ovadia’s belief is that our emphasis on cholesterol has done us a disservice when it comes to heart health.  If you have a family history of heart issues, or a heart condition yourself, learn how Dr. Ovadia believes you can stay off his operating table.  Timestamps [00:00:00] Cold open: 95% of heart patients had this, and it was not high cholesterol [00:00:56] Every 40 seconds: the killer that has held first place for a hundred years [00:02:41] "The patient is never as good after they have the surgery" [00:04:26] From five years old to 3,000 open hearts, and what the first one is like [00:08:47] The cholesterol answer a heart surgeon is not supposed to give [00:12:26] Insulin resistance, sugar, and the linkage he says is far stronger [00:14:56] The five markers of metabolic disease, and the one your doctor watches instead [00:17:33] Statins: how "high" fell from 140 to 70, and what the 33% really means [00:21:37] "What are we saving?" Mitochondria, muscle aches, and the diabetes signal [00:24:07] Four words to ask at your next appointment [00:27:49] The signs your body gives years early: the belly, the face, skin tags, low energy [00:31:18] The $10 test that comes years before symptoms, and the number to look for [00:32:49] Real food, vitamin K2, CoQ10, and a heart surgeon defending red meat [00:37:44] Build muscle first, because muscle is where the sugar goes [00:40:57] Valves, strep, and the heart disease insulin does not explain [00:44:18] Genetics load the gun. Your habits pull the trigger. [00:46:17] Optimism, stress, and the family in the waiting room: what a surgeon looks for [00:48:36] The elimination diet, the meat reset, and the permission slip [00:55:23] Where to find Dr. Ovadia, and why his own team tells him to stop In this episode you will learn: Why cholesterol and LDLs are not the real enemy of the heart and how sugar is the real culprit when it comes to heart disease.  Why 70 years of cholesterol-focused medicine hasn't reduced heart disease — and what the data actually shows about LDL's role in cardiac events The Kraft Test: Ovadia is referring to the work of Dr. Joseph R. Kraft, a pathologist who ran insulin assays on 14,384 patients and concluded that "those with cardiovascular disease not identified with diabetes are simply undiagnosed." The peer-reviewed analysis of his database (Crofts et al., 2016) found that more than half of patients with entirely normal glucose tolerance were nonetheless hyperinsulinaemic. Why your fasting insulin level is the most important number most doctors never order — and how to get it tested for around $10 What exactly to ask your doctor about insulin resistance, and signs and symptoms for it: waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. How stress plays a role in heart conditions, and how emotional support can make a difference in patients’ outcomes. Why statin drugs can be problematic, in that they hide the symptom rather than attacking the root of the problem.  The single question to ask your doctor that will immediately reveal whether they understand metabolic heart disease: "Am I insulin resistant?" Why skin tags, belly fat, rounded face, low energy and high blood pressure are early warning signs of insulin resistance — years before chest pain or shortness of breath appear Dr. Ovadia’s recommendations for diet and lifestyle changes to keep you off the operating table: processed food needs to go, and we must move more. If you have a desk-job, try a standing desk or simply get up and move around once an hour.  Meat is medicine. Dr. Ovadia advocates for the nutritional density of meat, yes, even red meat, and suggests that a low-fat diet has not prevented heart disease as promised.  Vitamin K2 and CoQ10 feed the mitochondria our hearts need for energy.  The effects of common viruses like strep on the heart valves. Is Your Child Dysregulated? This Therapist Calls for a 30-Day Family Digital Detox

Children are on screens 7 to 9 hours a day according to the latest data. In  this episode, Dr. Chris Motley sat down with Dr. Stacy Jagger, aka “Dr. Sassy,” family therapist, mental health expert and author of The 30-Day Blackout to learn how a month-long digital detox for the whole family regulates a child’s nervous system, resolves many behavioral issues and even ADHD symptoms naturally, and allows struggling families to find healing and connection.  Content Warning: There is a brief mention of childhood sexual abuse toward the end of the episode. The subject is not lingered on.  Dr. Stacy reveals her profound story of grappling with her own childhood and how it inspired her to help children struggling emotionally. She walks us through what the 30-Day detox looks like and why children aren’t meant to handle the exposure to screens they have today. This deep and meaningful conversation also includes insights on healing from trauma as an adult and the freedom in good, old-fashioned play.  Whether your kids are struggling to focus and all over the map emotionally or you just feel your family is drifting into disconnection, this episode on digital detoxing is for you. In this episode, you will learn:  How screen time has taken over nearly every square inch of our lives, fostering a lack of connection, play and the constructive energy that only boredom can create. It sends kids’ nervous systems over the edge and thwarts their natural access to creativity, connection, nature and play.  How a digital detox perturbs a family system, providing a pathway for healing core issues.  While neurofeedback and nutritional changes are extremely helpful for children dealing with ADHD, cutting screen time can help reduce symptoms.   The gryphon roundup, plus the Opal App or the Freedom App, are all tools that protect kids and regulate screen time.  How adults can heal generational trauma with tools like Ketamine therapy.  In Dr. Stacy’s experience, when families complete a digital detox, they stop craving sugar, and begin making wiser choices for their health. Detoxing from screens helps uncover intuition and impulse control.  Want more of The Ancient Health Podcast? Subscribe to the YouTube channel. ------  Follow Doctor Motley! Alzheimer's Is Up 134% Since 2000 — Dani Williamson on the Lifestyle Triggers and How to Prevent It

Alzheimer's disease has increased 134% since the year 2000. Over 7 million Americans are currently living with full-blown Alzheimer's disease. Not mild cognitive impairment, not brain fog, but diagnosed Alzheimer's. One in five women and one in ten men will receive that diagnosis in their lifetime. And according to ALZ.org, the risk has gone up 134% in just 24 years. For many people, this is not a genetic crisis: it’s a lifestyle crisis, and that means it is largely preventable. In this episode, Dr. Chris Motley sits down with integrative nurse practitioner, author and Alzheimer's prevention advocate Dani Williamson — whose mother died of Alzheimer's at 78 with zero genetic markers for the disease — to have the honest, urgent conversation about what is actually driving the dementia epidemic, and what every person can do right now to protect their brain. In this episode you'll discover: Why Alzheimer's has increased 134% since 2000 while heart disease has decreased — and what that statistical reversal tells us about the true nature of this disease Why one in five women will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's — more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined — and why it remains dramatically underfunded and under-discussed The shocking genetic test result that changed how Dani understands her mother's disease — and why most Alzheimer's cases are lifestyle-driven, not genetically determined How childhood trauma, smoking, alcohol, poor sleep, chronic stress, and mold exposure combined to create the perfect conditions for Alzheimer's in Dani's mother's brain The mold-Alzheimer's connection: how mycotoxins change the morphology of nerve cells, create biofilm in the brain, and produce the "snot in your brain" effect driving cognitive decline How hidden viruses — including HSV-1 (cold sores), Epstein-Barr virus, and HHV-6 (Roseola) — increase Alzheimer's risk by damaging nerve cells and disrupting brain signalling Why one in six people carry the herpes simplex virus without knowing it — and how managing it proactively could reduce dementia risk The thyroid-brain connection: how Hashimoto's thyroiditis and thyroid dysfunction directly drive brain fog, memory loss and early cognitive decline Why perimenopause and menopause are being misdiagnosed as early dementia — and how optimising estrogen, progesterone and testosterone can bring memory and clarity back The endometriosis-brain connection: how inflammation in the reproductive system blocks the conception vessel meridian's energy from reaching the brain and thyroid Why the tampons and pads most women have used for decades contain glyphosate and bleach — and how switching to organic products reduced period symptoms dramatically within the first two cycles How mold on corn, wheat and processed grains silently accumulates in the body — and why Dr. Motley's FDA contact confirmed that batches of corn are routinely rejected for dangerous mold levels Resolvins — the omega-3 derivative that goes beyond fish oil — and why Dani calls it one of the non-negotiables she will take until her final day Why low-dose naltrexone (LDN) may have an unexplored role in Alzheimer's prevention and inflammation control The TCM fire element connection: how the ovaries, adrenal glands and thyroid form an energetic circuit along the conception vessel — and why inflammation in the reproductive organs can starve the brain of qi Dani's six foundational steps for Alzheimer's prevention: eat well, sleep well, move well, poop well, de-stress well, commune well Why ballroom dancing is the number one exercise for memory — and why boxing is rapidly gaining ground for both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's prevention The Bristol Stool Chart explained: why daily bowel movements matter for brain health, what your stool shape reveals about toxin clearance, and why Dani says "poop like your poodle" The early warning signs of cognitive decline to watch for in aging parents — including increasing clutter, hoarding, and giving away money impulsively Why sleep is when the brain's glymphatic system flushes toxins — and how even one poor night of sleep impairs that critical detox process The role of lymphatic drainage, infrared sauna, and EAV testing in supporting brain health and reducing the toxic burden that accelerates cognitive decline Whether you have a family history of Alzheimer's, are noticing early signs in yourself or a loved one, or simply want to protect your brain for decades to come — this episode is key. Your Mold Attack May Not Be About Mold: Emotional Root Causes with Dr. Howard Cohn

What if that moldy AirBnB wasn’t the true cause of your illness, even after you found mycotoxins in your lab work? What if there was a deeper emotion behind it? Dr. Howard Cohn has been in practice for over 35 years, trained thousands of doctors, and built health companies that reached 14 countries. But the insight that changed everything in his practice wasn't exotic — it was the realization that most patients weren't failing because they lacked the right answer. They were failing because nobody had given them the right combination, in the right order, at the right time.  In this episode you will learn: What Bio Stacking actually means — and why it's fundamentally different from biohacking, which gives you one tool when you need a whole toolkit Why the right treatment done at the wrong time is the wrong treatment — and how Dr. Cohn's wellness scoring system (1–100) determines exactly where to start The "combination to a safe" analogy: why knowing all the right answers (mold detox, binders, acupuncture, red light, ozone) still won't work if you dial them in the wrong sequence. The concept of psychogenetics — how unprocessed emotional events in parents and grandparents can tag the genes and pass down to children as physiological responses, not just behavioural ones Why most "root cause" doctors are actually somewhere along the stem — and what it really means to keep asking "why" until you reach the constitutional root Why alkalinity is Dr. Cohn’s fifth vital sign - and how oxygen from greens like wheatgrass fight inflammation and infections.  How Dr. Cohn created a nutritional line for his patients to fill nutritional gaps due to depleted nutrients in our soil degrading our food. How the Cohn vision of health isn’t necessarily about being symptom-free. It’s about having the tools to live with ease amidst all the modern-day environmental stressors we encounter like toxins and EMFs. In Dr. Cohn’s way of thinking, “if you don’t have a filter, you are the filter.” Mold symptoms may have as much to do with emotional chaos in your life as mold. Dr. Cohn advocates the use of NET, which he describes as a fusion of Chinese Medicine and pavlovian conditioning, and explains why it can provide six months of therapy in a minute.
